Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 pictured again?
We couldn't make heads or tails of that thumbnail image we got sent a couple days ago alleging to be Sony Ericsson's X1 replacement -- it's not that we necessarily didn't buy it, it was just to friggin' small and weird to figure out what was going on. Well, when it rains, it pours, because a forum member over on fanklub.se has given up the goods in the form of a couple significantly better shots. We can already sense that there'll be a fierce debate brewing over whether this looks better than the phone it's destined to succeed, but the X2 definitely ups the specs with an 8.1 megapixel cam, flash, and what could be an extraordinarily usable keyboard (final judgment on that will have to wait until we play with a unit, but you've got to admit, anything would be an improvement over the first model). Still no word on when this might come to market or even be announced, unfortunately. Peep another shot after the break.

And the bankruptcy train keeps rolling
Sony Ericsson doesn't seem to learn from it's mistakes. The Xperia X1 was built with all the best hardware they could put together and ended up with a piece of crap that nearly bankrupted them. Now they intend to finish themselves off. Of course, Engadget types are going to start drooling over the wonderful keyboard and whatever other high-tech gear they can pack in it. And it's going to be a mish-mash of unrelated parts that only some nerd-boy is going to love. This won't beat the Pre because the X2 UI is probably going to be a nightmare to use if they're gonna stick WinMo 6.5 in it. Maybe they'll just wait and take a chance with WinMo 7.
Maybe, just maybe, if Palm were to license WebOS to SE, then it might be worth owning. But as it stands, it's just going to be a high-tech trainwreck. I'm sure it won't be cheap trainwreck, either.
Xperia X1 = costly failure for Sony Ericsson
Xperia X2 = the Redux of X1
iphonerulez: I disagree. I have an x1 and love it. To each his own. Yeah thats right, someone disagreed with you.
I know, your ego must be going nuts.
Go to gsmarena.com, notice the now 3rd highest rated phone is in fact the x1. I tried to find the placement of the iphone on the list
but the list isnt long enough...
iphonerulez
Does WebOS have Transport Tycoon Deluxe? Age of Empires? Heroes of Might and Magic? Worms?!
No!!! What is it, exactly? Yet another phone OS? Like we didn't have enough of those already...
Only WinMo has it all, so for now I'm sticking with it.
@iphonerulez: i prefer my x1(running Rhodium's TF3D) to the wife's iphone 3G, thankyouverymuch. in fact so do many others as the X1 is ranked second only to the touch pro as smartphones go. on front of the diamond(3) AND iphone 3g(4). and excactly how do you know that winmo 6.5 is a nightmare to use if it hasnt even been officially released yet? and i KNOW you're not running a beta of it on your iphone..... i, for one, believe you're just talking outta your a-hole..
I loved the X1 design however by the time it arrived its specs was outdated/Overpriced
Now if only Sony release X2 with that 8.1MP camera and this fall for less than 600$ i'll get one
I don't hope for high-quality camera as well as reasonable price. Its SE. And its sad.
And people are freaking out about the Pre? Pre: Small keyboard that cant be used unless your are of the feminine persuasion (or a guy with tiny ass hands) X2: Huge QWERTY that paul bunion could type on. Pre: 3mp Camera. X2: 8.1mp camera. Pre: stuck on shitty sprint. X2: GSM unlocked. This phone isnt even out yet and its already destroyed the Pre
Forget the Pre. I wonder if this will be competitive with the Samsung Omnia HD? The new iPhone better be good because the new phones coming out these days are amazing.
"This phone isnt even out yet..."
aaand that's the point. You see, the X1 is still not widely available. How can we trust SE to deliver on this phone when they screwed up the X1 so much? Also I'm not a fan on GSM unlocked phones. It's nice to have the option, but I'd rather take advantage of carrier subsidization. And Sprint isn't as bad as you think it is.
im soo tired of people saying the x1 is not readily available..you can go on any website(or sony store for that matter) and buy an x1 for God's sake.I've had mine for about 9months and I love it, its the best windows mobile phone out there, and yes i have had the chance to play with the tp2. i think this prototype is fugly compared to the x1, hopefully it'll change..and for all that dream of a lower price on this one, it's not gonna happen
@ Jacob
Actually sprint is as bad as I say. I had sprint for 4 years before I purchased my iphone. I would get insane charges to my bill that would never be removed unless I threatened to switch to AT&T as soon as I hung up. The customer support is obnoxious and terrible. Data is slow and useless. General cell service is unreliable.
EEEEEW! I would NEVER touch a phone if someone touched it with their tiny ass hands! :-)
What is wrong with you people not understanding that Megapixel count on a camera phone is pure marketing rubbish?? You could easily have a 2.0 megapixel camera with far better picture quality, SNR, color, etc than a different 8.0MP camera. The MP count means nothing!
Also, if the 8MP phone camera has a similar sized sensor to a 2 or 3 megapixel camera, it is going to have far more noise in less-than-perfect lighting conditions.
the X1 isn't available with any carrier. Not a lot of us are ok with spending $500 to $900 on a phone. And Sprint service depends on the area. Even Engadget says that their Sprint service has been terrific on the Pre (on the podcast they say that)
@Jacob
its only not available in US.... you can blame ATT and Tmobile for not having it.... but its available from carrier is any other country (well maybe not Canada as well)
Still looks overpriced...
Resistive screens suck.
Capacitive styluses suck.
Your finger sucks?
I do hope this is only a prototype design. I mean, the looks on this thing is not exactly ugly, but definitely not on par with the X1. Heck, I don't even mind if they use the same housing as the X1, as long as they just bump the spec.
As for the screen, I do hope they will switch to oled screen and keep the 800 x 480 resolution, but we can always wish for the amoled screens. It'd be nice if they could kindly bump up the screen size to a minimum 3.5 inch. Concerning about the Touchscreen technology, I could careless if it's resistive or capacitive. If they do go with capacitive, they better use some kind of scratch resistance material for it because having a screen protector over a capacitive screen lowers it's sensitivity. For the CPU, I really hope they would use the new 1.3 snapdragon, if not, I don't mind if they go for the old 1ghz. The most important thing of all is, they should finally add a accelerometer, digital compass, and keep the 3.5mm jack(and lower the price :D ).
That's my two cent on this so far.
Only way I could like this is if it allows 3G connection on T-Mobile since I can't switch providers yet. I know it'll work on regular GSM but I want faster internetz damn it!
Don't bet on it. Even if they do make a NA version of it, it's most likely geared towards AT&T's 850. Look at the NA version of the Satio(IDOU), it doesn't even have bands that would work on T-mobile's 3G. Even NA version of Nokia phones don't have T-mobile's 3G band.
Hm, can anyone tell what's the key on the bottom left of the front pane? Doesn't look like the standard X-Panels key to me.
BLUGH
why is it an ugly phone? I thought the Xperia line was supposed to convey a fashion statement or something...
says the guy with the phone as his avatar that has an ugly chin...
Dont put a resistive touch screen or Windows Mobile on it. Have it through a carrier with a nice discount.
...
just pooped a little.
I been gave up on SEX1 when i seen that $800 price tag! Good day...
LOL,
Can we just wait for some better shots/specs before we start blasting the phone? No one knows a thing about the insides of this thing yet.
@iphonerulez: Dude, you don't get tired do you? Not everyone wants to buy the phone you think is the best. I don't like or own the iphone or the pre, but Geez it's like Palm and Mac pay you for the cockslobbin job you perform. I'd imagine they pay you enough to sit at home and troll Engadget and proclaim how great they are. lol
You say that the phone will be a "mish mash of parts only a nerd boy would love" well God Bless the manufacturers that release phones that
A) I like
b) I can use because my hands are to big for keyboards like the Pre, or an imaginary on-screen keyboard like the iphone.
Then again, I like being able to use phones and check out places like XDA-developers were I won't run into a dumb-ass non-nerd such as yourself.
(just for the record, Ya'll that like the iphone, That's what's up. I ain't bashin or iphone hatin. Real talk, I think the UI is nice and all that, but they AIN"T FOR ME. The keyboard ain't my thing, I like memory cards, and I don't use Itunes)
@Brian
Seriously.....just ignore him. I have 2 iPhones (and love 'em), but you wont hear me tearing down others.
His rants get tired quick.....like 6 months ago.
Ford vs Chevy vs Mopar........
Yes.....I own an iPhone. But Im constantly seeing other phones that make me take notice.
Dude, we get it. You LOVE the iPhone. But seriously.....STFU already.
I own a X1 for 6 months and I have got to say I love it more than the iphone I was using before it. Except for the fact that iphone has a lot more apps and games that you can download easily, however I can find more useful program for my X1 such as real GPS from garmin or TomTom.
oh and the keyboard is actually very good imo
At least the screen appears to be flush with the fascia this time, which is probably my biggest bugbear with the X1.
...That looks pretty darn ugly. I'll be sticking with my X1.
i love it when people go ffs camera megapixels mean nothing... true they dont all the time but in all fairness the sony ericsson cybershot cams are good for phones.
so pipe down young gun,
I did a little siftin around and I came across this photo on another site
http://www.intomobile.com/2009/02/25/windows-mobile-7-confirmed-for-2010-release.html
I'm not sure if that's an actual photo from the presentation they're speaking of in the article (I didn't read it all anyway) but the phone in the background looks eerily similar to what we're seeing here.
Might be the inaugural WM7 device.
One can dream.
If you ask me, it looks more like the Samsung i900 Omnia.
yeah, I guess your right. I wasn't sure.
Oh well, moving along.
