Apple shows iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, hits devices June 17th
Apple's showing off iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, and while we've seen most of it, there were naturally going to be a few surprises:
- Users will now be able to rent and purchase movies from the phone, along with audiobooks.
- MMS will be available from 29 carriers at launch, with AT&T lagging behind into the summer.
- Tethering over Bluetooth and USB for Macs and PCs is also enabled, with 22 carriers announcing support, but AT&T wasn't mentioned among them -- we're not holding our breath.
- New and improved Safari does JavaScript 3X faster, and supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video. There's also AutoFill for forms, and improved HTML 5 support including audio and video tags.
- Find My iPhone tracks down your phone using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, and also allows you to remote wipe the device, or even play a sound on the phone for locating it around the house -- even when it's on vibrate.
- New dev features have been detailed at length, but they're still around. Features include in-app purchases (but only for apps that were paid to start out with), Bluetooth and dock connector communication with other devices, including other iPhones. Embedded Google Maps in third party apps, including turn by turn apps. Push notifications of text alerts, number badges and sound alerts.

Just show us the new iphone...we already know about OS 3.0...
tiny.cc is down
Tethering, MMS and Autofilling of paswords
Party like it's 2004!
Nokia has been pre-copying Apple fo so long, we all know Apple invented MMS!
Also bluetooth file transfer. Am I in a time warp?
Even my pathetic and cheap nokia 5310 can do copy paste...
Lol..
Lol AT&T.
tethering bitches!
Not for AT&T.. Unless you have any smart phone other than the iphone.
Hahahahahaha. Don't have a jailbroken iPhone? You are S.O.L.
damnit AT&T!!!! :(
find my iphone..
wipe information? or gather a crew and go beat up who stole it. hmm
Good luck finding who stole it. Judging from the image of the map tracking your iPhone, it looks like you won't even be able to know where exactly the person is, just a general area.
cool right? my gps pegs me everytime so I'd trust this
LOL AT&T, they really cant keep up with Apple's data demands. And/or they dont like the idea of tethering.
It's more like LOL @ iphone users... It's not that AT&T doesn't like tethering, (you can tether with any of their other smart phones) it's that they know iphone users will buy the iphone regardless of what features they disable. Why waste the bandwidth if you know the suckers won't put up a fuss?
Yeah, patriot, because you can tether on the Pre ... oh wait, no, no you can't.
So are you now going to blame Palm users, as well as Apple users, for carriers blocking tethering?
Why not blame the carriers, since, you know, it *is* their decision, and all? Not Apple's, not Palm's, and definitely not the decision of the users of their respective devices.
sure would be nice if the phone locater gave you something closer than a one block radius. great idea just not well executed. on the other hand, getting the phone to ring even its on vibrate is a nice feature. hopefully both catch on with other phone companies and be improved even further.
at&t thinks tethering is a giant bag of hurt.
As does apple with with blu-ray.
I just want to tether to my IPod touch from my cellphone, don't ask what cellphone I got, I'm ashamed.
hint: release by Cingular and its code name was the name of a greek god...of messaging with wings on his heels.
So you want to tether your HTC Hercules (WinMo 5?) with an iPod Touch? That's not going to happen.
I meant HTC hermes ( I hate that there is no edit mode here).
its called WMWifiRouter bro. I use it all the time. Wifi tethering ftw
Watch WWDC here.

i thot medical apps has already been implemented in other mobile phones?.... the medical community flock to iPhone? Hopefully they aren't the quacks.
testbooks on mobile units aren't new at all.....
Nothing really new here. I like the FindmyIphone App. Still no real backgrounding. And please hurry the fuck up and show thenew Iphone.
what are you expecting in the new iphone? 5mpx camera?
Naw I am expecting marginal upgrades. I am not sure why I am so anxious. I am going to see it and say oh okay....why didn't we have this day one.
lol... good one.
@ Longshot
Thats what i said about 3.0
'cos they fanbois all think so.
As a Iphone user it feels great to see features in OS 3.0 that have already been in other devices for years....
Yay turn by turn GPS
Yay push notifications
Yay I can record video
Too many Yays!
sigh... fanbois....
That was sarcasm....
But there the background apps, silent notifications, like what it shows at the corner of the mail app, wireless sync (since I have to borrow a cable to sync my touchy device) and something else that I momentarily forgot about. Make the beauty work well too.
Targeting students, now that's marketing strategy. Really good one as well. MS used that during the 80s and it worked to their favor under a decade.
A lot of cool iPhone stuff being announced here... but tethering on AT&T isn't going to happen this generation.
AT&T's 3G network would disintegrate like an alka-seltzer if iPhone users started tether en masse.
AT&T's going to have to wait for their 4G network before they're ready for widespread tethering.
AT&T is old and needs to make way for better operators.
Then AT&T needs to get off their lazy asses and upgrade their shitty network. Blackberry users have had limited tethering options for years, why can't we iPhone users have the same. All they have to do from keeping the network sturdy is place a 5GB cap on it. While I know people hate bandwidth caps, 5 gigs is plenty for people who just want to enjoy occasional browsing on a larger screen.
This is so stupid having to pay $10 for the iPod Touch each time there's an update. Is there any way around this?
Get a zune.
download an illegal copy once the software comes out.
thats what i did for the 2.0 update.
just google =]
yeah that's what i was thinking
Yippe! I get to pay more money again!
SHIT...... Wait again =.=" I want to update 3.0 NOW =.=
AT&T sucks. All I really want is MMS support and they frak that up and have to wait till end of summer. Sound more like maybe end of the year.
word. over 3000 complaints at the Calif. Public Utilities Commission, and over 1800 with the Better Business Bureau. AT&T sucks. At least it looks like iPhone users will have a chance to change services to other competitors.
ummm.....where's the A2DP Bluetooth? it's a simple feature so maybe why it got no mention but if this was dropped.....I'm pissed
I just want to know what *won't* work on the 3g vs. the 3gs...
Well, first, no video recording on the 3G, and no Compass, or voice control..... really sucks if you ask me, the 3G can support all of those, looks like its time to jailbreak.
*Except Compass, that isnt supported on the iphone 3Gs
no nike+ for iphone 3g..... i was really hoping there would be
16 june... is this a worldwide release for 3.0?
WHAT! No icecrwam dispencer!
What exactly does "3.0 will be pushed to devices" mean?
Will Apple send out thief magic bullet sms and shut all iPhones on the 2.xxx down and then iTunes will force the user into a 3.0 upgrade that is going to block jailbreaking?
Oh come on Right to Repair act! Cuz we need you to save us from Apple.
So is the iPhone 3G going to get voice control also with 3.0 or is that aspect as well as video recording only on the 3GS?
rotflmao...wow, MMS...unless you're in the US then I guess the great advancements of 5 years ago will have to wait a little bit longer.
The new safari will help the iphone keep up with newer smartphones *cough* Pre *cough* but it's quite the joke to give it an entire version number jump and try to charge $9.95 for stuff that should have been in the phone to begin with. It's not like it's some low-end phone or something, why the hell are they charging $9.95 so customers of a high-end smartphone can get MMS?!?
damn first time i see apple folks irritated
It seems they still can't figure out Google Latitude without a background applications feature.
Ummm, push email? Any ideas if that has been implemented - Push imap support for Gmail would be great!
Well this news sucks. Looks like I will be jailbreaking my iPhone 3G.
This is the biggest disappointment since Steve Jobs!
developers, please leak the .ispw file for 3.0 firmwares already! i want the 1 for ipod touch v1.
Does iPhone OS 3.0 allows Bluetooth PAN in order to connect to Internet between Bluetooth capable phone ?
If not, this update isn't interesting for me.
What happened to running multiple apps and why didn't they show off copy and paste (or did I just miss it)?
Why are AT&T being such d1ck heads?
Dude, you are spamming like crazy.
I'm sick and tired of paying for every new OS for the ipod touch. I had to shell out cash just get an email client, then i paid more just to get 2.0 and now i'm going to have to pay for 3.0. Yayyyy
Im not quite clear on the 29 carriers thing..... Does this mean AT&T doesnt have exclusivity to this anymore (did tmobile get it too?) ?
Luckily there are other carriers in the world.
"The new OS will be pushed to devices on June 17th"
Really? Pushed?
And the winner is..........palm pre I'm in shock right not I thought apple was gon do it big. They just put basic shit on there phone that came out in 2001. I also heard sprint is working out a deal to lock up the pre for years instead of months wow I'm so sorry apple fanboys you can always come to the pre side we need so nerds. Look at it on the bright side at least you don't have a black berry storm. Oh yea I'm typing this from my palm pre lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!tears in my eyes bg where you at with that dick riding iphone 3.0 review lol
/shrug it's only some small things that we're missing.
How many apps does the pre have available?
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MMGYNKKP
iPhone 3G GM copy :)
love love love you
Everyone does ;)
Anyone know if this requires an SDK account or if it will work on any iPhone?
You need a Dev account, or have your phone on someones list
Figures. I was hoping since this was the gold master that it might not.
Anyone hear or ready anything from AT&T with any information about why they can't implement MMS for the iPhone on time when they have it for virtually every other phone they carry?
What does this mean & how will it benefit me on my 3G? I was really hoping for flash support - maybe this is something similar & I'm to much of a novice to know it...?
"supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video"
I'm confused as well. What is HTML audio/video streaming? Can anyone give us an example website?
My iPod already supports streaming video. I use an app from France24 that has live TV. And there a LiveStation app which streams high quality live TV as well (not sure why it is not available on the US store)
"Find My iPhone tracks down your phone using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, and also allows you to remote wipe the device, or even play a sound on the phone for locating it around the house -- even when it's on vibrate."
Now that is just f*cking AWESOME!!!!
at&t is such a bitch
first they pry on our phone calls, then they read our emails to see if we're infringing on their "intellectual property", and now they provide a crappy service that is miles behind that in third world countries...
Are video downloads over just wifi or 3g/edge too?
what about tmobile iphone users. am i gonna get mms and tethering
Its out, you just gotta find it.
nvm, someone posted a link
It's still not real web browsing if it doesn't support flash:(
In other news, Apple cuts corners yet again:
Landscape keyboard for "key" apps?
FAIL
Engadget, this has to be the worst article ever written, talk about the biggest thought not completed. There were so many more functionalities announced formally and informally from the last conference, can't you comment on where those stand from this? Many of these posts from your article are readers inquiring about functionalities you haven't confirmed, such as A2DP, push notifications, landscape keyboard (although it is pictured), etc. Can you complete this article and try again?
are you serious? No MMS on AT&T yet? You have got to be kidding me. Why the HECK would they hold out. THat's one of the things that i've been waiting for... UGH! I can't wait for the ATT and APPLE contract to end
seriously.
won't say where i downloaded it but i installed 3.0 early yesterday and so far, it's really a fantastic improvement. everything works much, much faster; internet, texting, landscape for email and text and spotlight is a wonderful edition.
I still don't understand why the iPod version of Maps doesn't support street view. I mean come on, you're going to charge me $10 for copy paste function and a landscape keyboard? At least the new OS has Arabic support (or so I heard).
Still though I think it is unfair to charge for functions that should have been there in the first place. Things like language support, landscape keyboard and copy/paste should have been included in the original release.
Am I wrong or do other people think this is unfair?
