Apple shows iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, hits devices June 17th
Apple's showing off iPhone OS 3.0 at WWDC, and while we've seen most of it, there were naturally going to be a few surprises:
- Users will now be able to rent and purchase movies from the phone, along with audiobooks.
- MMS will be available from 29 carriers at launch, with AT&T lagging behind into the summer.
- Tethering over Bluetooth and USB for Macs and PCs is also enabled, with 22 carriers announcing support, but AT&T wasn't mentioned among them -- we're not holding our breath.
- New and improved Safari does JavaScript 3X faster, and supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video. There's also AutoFill for forms, and improved HTML 5 support including audio and video tags.
- Find My iPhone tracks down your phone using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, and also allows you to remote wipe the device, or even play a sound on the phone for locating it around the house -- even when it's on vibrate.
- New dev features have been detailed at length, but they're still around. Features include in-app purchases (but only for apps that were paid to start out with), Bluetooth and dock connector communication with other devices, including other iPhones. Embedded Google Maps in third party apps, including turn by turn apps. Push notifications of text alerts, number badges and sound alerts.

Party like it's 2004!
Alan Partridge @ Jun 8th 2009 2:07PM
Nokia has been pre-copying Apple fo so long, we all know Apple invented MMS!
matt @ Jun 8th 2009 2:11PM
Also bluetooth file transfer. Am I in a time warp?
ark_v2 @ Jun 8th 2009 10:06PM
Even my pathetic and cheap nokia 5310 can do copy paste...
nomadd79 @ Jun 9th 2009 8:46PM
Lol..
Stacky @ Jun 8th 2009 2:05PM
Lol AT&T.
mere @ Jun 8th 2009 2:06PM
tethering bitches!
patriotsn1 @ Jun 8th 2009 2:11PM
Not for AT&T.. Unless you have any smart phone other than the iphone.
bethel03 @ Jun 8th 2009 2:08PM
Hahahahahaha. Don't have a jailbroken iPhone? You are S.O.L.
Be Fearless @ Jun 8th 2009 2:08PM
damnit AT&T!!!! :(
Sam @ Jun 8th 2009 2:10PM
find my iphone..
wipe information? or gather a crew and go beat up who stole it. hmm
ALBGunner04 @ Jun 8th 2009 3:16PM
Good luck finding who stole it. Judging from the image of the map tracking your iPhone, it looks like you won't even be able to know where exactly the person is, just a general area.
reuben @ Jun 10th 2009 7:37PM
cool right? my gps pegs me everytime so I'd trust this
HalfJoey @ Jun 8th 2009 2:12PM
LOL AT&T, they really cant keep up with Apple's data demands. And/or they dont like the idea of tethering.
patriotsn1 @ Jun 8th 2009 4:51PM
It's more like LOL @ iphone users... It's not that AT&T doesn't like tethering, (you can tether with any of their other smart phones) it's that they know iphone users will buy the iphone regardless of what features they disable. Why waste the bandwidth if you know the suckers won't put up a fuss?
VanillaSpice @ Jun 8th 2009 11:10PM
Yeah, patriot, because you can tether on the Pre ... oh wait, no, no you can't.
So are you now going to blame Palm users, as well as Apple users, for carriers blocking tethering?
Why not blame the carriers, since, you know, it *is* their decision, and all? Not Apple's, not Palm's, and definitely not the decision of the users of their respective devices.
thatrotierkid @ Jun 8th 2009 2:14PM
sure would be nice if the phone locater gave you something closer than a one block radius. great idea just not well executed. on the other hand, getting the phone to ring even its on vibrate is a nice feature. hopefully both catch on with other phone companies and be improved even further.
snakegriffin @ Jun 8th 2009 2:16PM
at&t thinks tethering is a giant bag of hurt.
ksiemek44 @ Jun 9th 2009 12:14PM
As does apple with with blu-ray.
Absolute92 @ Jun 8th 2009 2:16PM
I just want to tether to my IPod touch from my cellphone, don't ask what cellphone I got, I'm ashamed.
hint: release by Cingular and its code name was the name of a greek god...of messaging with wings on his heels.
kevinm @ Jun 8th 2009 2:19PM
So you want to tether your HTC Hercules (WinMo 5?) with an iPod Touch? That's not going to happen.
kevinm @ Jun 8th 2009 2:21PM
I meant HTC hermes ( I hate that there is no edit mode here).
jesus @ Jun 8th 2009 3:16PM
its called WMWifiRouter bro. I use it all the time. Wifi tethering ftw
tylerstempinski @ Jun 8th 2009 2:22PM

darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:24PM
testbooks on mobile units aren't new at all.....
LongshotX @ Jun 8th 2009 2:25PM
Nothing really new here. I like the FindmyIphone App. Still no real backgrounding. And please hurry the fuck up and show thenew Iphone.
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:27PM
what are you expecting in the new iphone? 5mpx camera?
LongshotX @ Jun 8th 2009 2:30PM
Naw I am expecting marginal upgrades. I am not sure why I am so anxious. I am going to see it and say oh okay....why didn't we have this day one.
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:33PM
lol... good one.
James @ Jun 8th 2009 3:02PM
@ Longshot
Thats what i said about 3.0
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:26PM
'cos they fanbois all think so.
LongshotX @ Jun 8th 2009 2:29PM
As a Iphone user it feels great to see features in OS 3.0 that have already been in other devices for years....
Yay turn by turn GPS
Yay push notifications
Yay I can record video
Too many Yays!
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:30PM
sigh... fanbois....
LongshotX @ Jun 8th 2009 2:34PM
That was sarcasm....
pavlindrom @ Jun 9th 2009 8:54AM
But there the background apps, silent notifications, like what it shows at the corner of the mail app, wireless sync (since I have to borrow a cable to sync my touchy device) and something else that I momentarily forgot about. Make the beauty work well too.
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:32PM
Targeting students, now that's marketing strategy. Really good one as well. MS used that during the 80s and it worked to their favor under a decade.
Brian @ Jun 8th 2009 2:34PM
A lot of cool iPhone stuff being announced here... but tethering on AT&T isn't going to happen this generation.
AT&T's 3G network would disintegrate like an alka-seltzer if iPhone users started tether en masse.
AT&T's going to have to wait for their 4G network before they're ready for widespread tethering.
darkmax @ Jun 8th 2009 2:37PM
AT&T is old and needs to make way for better operators.
braindead360 @ Jun 8th 2009 3:33PM
Then AT&T needs to get off their lazy asses and upgrade their shitty network. Blackberry users have had limited tethering options for years, why can't we iPhone users have the same. All they have to do from keeping the network sturdy is place a 5GB cap on it. While I know people hate bandwidth caps, 5 gigs is plenty for people who just want to enjoy occasional browsing on a larger screen.
xnifex @ Jun 8th 2009 2:52PM
This is so stupid having to pay $10 for the iPod Touch each time there's an update. Is there any way around this?
James @ Jun 8th 2009 3:04PM
Get a zune.
annee @ Jun 8th 2009 3:12PM
download an illegal copy once the software comes out.
thats what i did for the 2.0 update.
just google =]
xnifex @ Jun 8th 2009 4:17PM
yeah that's what i was thinking
Timerider @ Jun 8th 2009 2:59PM
Yippe! I get to pay more money again!
Henry @ Jun 9th 2009 12:38AM
SHIT...... Wait again =.=" I want to update 3.0 NOW =.=
Jnetty @ Jun 8th 2009 3:03PM
AT&T sucks. All I really want is MMS support and they frak that up and have to wait till end of summer. Sound more like maybe end of the year.
PhotoGuru @ Jun 9th 2009 10:20PM
word. over 3000 complaints at the Calif. Public Utilities Commission, and over 1800 with the Better Business Bureau. AT&T sucks. At least it looks like iPhone users will have a chance to change services to other competitors.
