NEC rolls out two new high-end 24-inch MultiSync monitors

The may not be quite as energy efficient as some of NEC's offerings or as jaw-dropping as some others, but the company's new MultiSync LCD2490WUXi² and LCD2490W2-BK-SV displays will no doubt be just the ticket for at least a few graphics professionals out there. From the looks of it, the two 24-inch monitors are mostly identical, and pack an IPS panel with a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 320 cd/m² brightness, 96.7% coverage of the sRGB color space, and NEC's AmbiBright ambient light sensor with automatic backlight adjustment. The big difference is that the LCD2490W2 model comes bundled with NEC's SpectraView color calibration sensor and, of course, a slightly higher price tag. Look for it to run you $1,299, while the SpectraView-less LCD2490WUXi² will set you back $1,099.

{insert comment about how annoying the many apple stories have been and how refreshing this is}
Li @ Jun 8th 2009 9:43PM
Did I mention their LCD2180WG-LED-SV LED backlit monitor is now only $1200 when it used to be $4000 couple month ago? Get that at all costs and avoid those sRGB screens if you are a photography/graphics design professional...

Thank you.

this would be interesting if your couldn't get a refurbished HP dreamcolor monitor for 1,100ish.
JohnTitor @ Jun 8th 2009 9:59PM
finally, IPS FTW, but wtf with the price, might as well get a Dell or Apple display instead
matt @ Jun 9th 2009 3:48AM
This is far better than than any dell/apple display.
MacroEQ @ Jun 8th 2009 9:59PM
Didn't Engadget learn from it's last lesson after posting so many Apple articles that is caused a flame war and comments had to be disabled?
I guess not...
RafaelAustin @ Jun 8th 2009 10:05PM
Doesn't the Dell still beat these specs for a lot less?
Ken @ Jun 8th 2009 10:14PM
Key phrase you use is 'beat specs'. Specs are not as important as the end result, real-world performance on a monitor like this. Something may have so-so specs, but is so perfect in execution that it trounces everything else out there.
JohnTitor @ Jun 8th 2009 10:49PM
yes it does
Luke @ Jun 8th 2009 11:26PM
Absolutely not, this is a color calibrated monitor that can do accurate color representation of 97% of the sRGB color space. They are designed for graphic professionals they need to see true color representation. You can not compare these monitors to almost any dell monitor, even the very high end ones, this is just in another league.

Not much of a deal if it's the same price....
Luke @ Jun 8th 2009 11:20PM
I like, very nice
Kinger @ Jun 9th 2009 12:21AM
Anyone know a good alternative to the 30" Cinema Display?
Soulsaber @ Jun 9th 2009 2:21AM
Dell's 30" displays.
matt @ Jun 9th 2009 3:49AM
HP Lp3065
KL @ Jun 9th 2009 12:22AM
But why doesn't this article reference the iPhone or apple? I don't get it.
John @ Jun 9th 2009 12:57AM
just 20 (erm, 20x1200) pixels short of normality
either way, awesome displays
DracoDan @ Jun 9th 2009 1:15AM
Actually, the poster is just an idiot; several times now he has said certain monitors are 1900x1200. I double checked on the NEC website before writing this, and it is in fact 1920x1200.
Donald: please read these before making any more posts concerning monitors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WUXGA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution . By posting this incorrect information, you may very we be deterring potential customers that prefer to stick to a standard resolution.

The MultiSync LCD2490WUXi² and LCD2490W2-BK-SV include the following features:
* 1900 x 1200 native resolution

Funny how the NEC "SpectraView" looks just like the X-Rite i1Display 2. Not so very NEC.

matt @ Jun 9th 2009 3:51AM
That's because it is. The 30" has a port to plug the xrite in.
boomsilent @ Jun 9th 2009 2:19AM
who the flying fuck wants 97% of S- rgb? That's only good for web design, which will still end up looking different on different people's monitors. what a waste.
Adobe 98 @100%+ or gtfo
that's the first time I've seen a company use that crappy color space as a 'feature' - yuck.
Critter @ Jun 9th 2009 7:49AM
Agreed. I'll stick with an Eizo CG211.
Musouka @ Jun 9th 2009 3:10AM
Just buy a LCD2490WUXi/LCD2490WUXi--BK-SV while you still can. The new ones lack the A-TW Polarize. As a result, off-angle blacks won't look as good.
webterractive @ Jun 9th 2009 4:23AM
This is pretty interesting after the launch of Android and WebOS. Symbian is pretty ancient by todays standards and looks really ugly. I'm sure it's very useful and probably better then the iPhone OS, Linux, and WebOS put together, but it's one of those OSes that is esthetically challenged. I wonder with all these new OSes if Symbian will sport a WebOS, iPhone OS or Android like OS of their own. Nokia makes very nice sets, but their OS is just craap!
Lazarpandar @ Jun 9th 2009 6:39AM
deal shunt sounds like a stupid website anyway
