Nintendo admits to scrapping new handheld plans in the past three years

Nintendo's talkative global president Satoru Iwata turned a few heads when he told CNBC that the company had another handheld gaming system completed and ready for production sometime in the past three years, but that it ultimately decided not to release it. Though he didn't give any details on the handheld, he did say that, "in the history of Nintendo
there are several such examples." We can only hope that some kind of wild, awesome Gameboy prototype hits our desk one day. Nintendo's most recent handheld, the DSi, has moved over a million units, including around 435,000 during its first week of sale in the U.S.

Virtua Boy 2.
They decided to scrap the idea after they saw the Angry Nintendo Nerd's review of the first one...

lol @ the ds in the picture :D
Yeah that thing is pretty damn funny.
Haha, I made that image years ago :)

The ghost of the Nintendo DSP rears its ugly headf.
How is this news? They already said this during the E3 keynote, no?
E3 only reaches a core of people who are interested.
This is on CNBC, a business news channel, that is likely reaching a vastly difference audience.
From a business angle, why introduce a completely new device when the current on is generating wildly good sales and making investors happy.
The last time this happened, it was the GBA. Those with long memories will recall a colour, SNES-like Nintendo handheld slated for release in the second half of the 1990s. The Gameboy Color came out instead, to the bemusement of those who'd been following the rumours. The GBA came out a while later instead. So this may not be the last we hear of this project. It wouldn't be the first Nintendo device to be permanently shelved though.
EWWWWWWWWWWW
WTF IS THAT????
That's what... she said?
(Sorry, I couldn't stop myself)
*Not the Actual Design
Probably made using the program "Photoshop"
"Sorry, I couldn't stop myself"
That's what she said!
it still looks better than the psp go lol
Just a joke I made up when everyone was trying to find out what the NDS looked like years ago...

I'm still waiting for the SNES CD,
Thank God this never saw teh light of day.
It's bad enough it made it to "realisitc 3D render" stage.
I'm pretty sure that design would never even made the "Hey I have an idea" phase at Nintendo.
YOu know, its all right with me. THe DS is a fine portable gaming device. Don't think it really needs more power or anything. It has tons of great games to boot. Shouldn't need anything new for the next 4 years.
soul caliburs (new game) graphics on the new psp are hot, will nintendo ever satisfy the graphics whore?
Nintendo doesn't need to. There are enough DS games that focus on, you know, GAMEplay that they don't need to satisfy the graphics whore. The graphics whore is never satisfied anyways.
Disclaimer: Yeah, I'm a Nintendo fan.
They would increase profits, but they already making enough. yes.
This is so old.... When the DS was announced they said it wasnt a gameboy 2 and a separate brand. Hinting that we should of seen another gameboy some point in the future. Clearly the DS took off so well they decided not to confuse customers and stick with one platform.
Nintendo is dead to me.
I take it you haven't seen the PSP Go :p
@tektroid
PSP Go = Sony
so I am not sure where you are going with this
@thatrotierkid
In the handheld console market, Nintendo doesn't really have much competition besides Sony.
And Sony's new PSP-Go (the answer to DSi) is currently receiving a lot of flaming with many swearing not to buy it.
So Nintendo's handheld pie is pretty safe at the moment - nowhere near dead.

comparisons of portable hardware of main competitor is where I'm going with this. I thought that was obvious.
haha ok i gotcha. i was being dumb. my bad ^_^
I wonder what Nintendo's next handheld would be...
i just cant imagine what kind of technology they would use...
No kidding. My DS is a dust collector. The PSP beats it like a red-headed stepchild. If it wasn't for the CycloDS, I wouldn't have laid hands on it in over a year.
Of course, I could say the same thing about the Wii. Thank goodness Nintendo has alot of noobs and old ladies to sell their second-rate hardware to. As long as the noobs don't know there's better consoles out there, Nintendo will be safe.
Gotta love all the people that can't read "Not actual design."
This news is a mixed bag. On one hand, they obviously didn't need a new design with the success of the DS (in all of its hey-we'll-sell-the-same-thing-over-again-because-its-the-fad-with-handhelds-designs), but more power could help it crank out some more convincing 3D games to satisfy the hardcore crowd.
Unfortunately, I think G4 is to blame. And, of course, all of these Apple users. Neither group is particularly bright or literate. But what they lack in intelligence and common sense, they more then make up for in they are arrogance and rudeness.
I hate the DS and all the old people at Nintendo.
Yes! Down with old people! Who cares if, in the end, they're responsible for every game we play and every console we buy. They suck!
I'm willing to bet it would've been an actual gaming system (unlike the DSi) and they scrapped it because they decided to become a lifestyle brand instead of a game company some time ago.
How in the world can the crazy looking contraption on the front page be played?
Like the old N64 controller, it requires three hands to use all the controls at once.
The Nintendo DSI is a definite improvement over the older Nintendo DS because it has bigger dual screens and two integrated 640x480 cameras. You will also like the web browser.
