Pre sets first day and first weekend device sales records for Sprint, almost ruins a wedding
As of late Sunday, the new Palm Pre became the fastest starter ever for Sprint, setting records both for best first day sales and best first weekend sales, according to a Sprint press release. Unfortunately, Sprint doesn't mention a specific number of devices sold (the best estimate so far is around 50,000), or what device the Pre knocked off the top spot -- we'd say the Instinct, if we had to guess. The rest of the effusive PR is spent on extensive self praise, with CEO Dan Hesse calling the launch "the coming out party for the new Sprint." In between plugs for the Ready Now experience, however, unfolds the bizarre story of a groom-to-be standing in line 15 minutes before his wedding. We don't want to spoil the ending, but let's just say it's got "feel good romcom of the summer" written all over it.

hey something besides apple news
Honestly I would really like some printer-related news to break up all of the phone wars.
I would like some HDD news...or maybe even a nice little high tech coffee pot news =]
I want more wireless charging news...
According to this article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2348369,00.asp Sprint did much-much better than that "50,000 best estimate."
I want more pastry news...uyh...baked by new high fangled tech =]
Goddamn Fanboys:
Look_around_you: You want printer news? Got to The Unofficial Epson Weblog (TUEW)
iDavey: Jitterheads you fanboy
Dounuts: Shockjocks.com
iDavey again: Enbake.
How am I a fanboy? I'm lost....
@iDavey... you have an i on the front of your username.
(I'm done with the phone wars stuff, got my phone, and happy for all you guys that bought or are getting yours soon).
The iPhone 3GS just put that turncoat ex-Apple guy holding a Pre out of a job. That's OK, he'll have lots of company since the rest of the smartphone industry will be joining him.
3GS, what does the 'S' stand for? Scam?
because, you know, the one way to get people to stop talking about the apple news is to complain about the apple news on a non-apple post.... brilliant.
@ jjrudy:
I'm getting sick of this reverse bias. It's bias in and of itself. This is an article about Pre, which doesn't even mention Apple. I'm no Apple fan, in fact I kind of detest them. But the fact of the matter is this is a big time of year for a big manufacturer that makes a lot of money and deserves a big spot in tech news. Why can't I read a single comment on here about anything without someone whining about Apple coverage? Constantly reading whining about Apple bias in non-apple related articles is worse than constantly reading about Apple. Grow up.
they look like a bunch of ex-cons.
I just want some pr0n.
iDavey:
(pssst: it was a joke)
Nice job, Sprint and Palm. All you guys have to do now is iron out the small kinks and it should be relatively smooth sailing.
I dug up an old article when the Instinct was released on Sprint. This is from PMP Today:
"According to Sprint, Instinct have sold out after only its first week in sales, confirming rumors that the phone was making sales history. Pali Research also discovered that Sprint stores have sold out while Instinct has been so scarce, 54% of stores have less than 15 Instincts left. Sprint does not have the numbers yet, but the consumer response is nothing short of phenomenal especially with iPhone 3G this close to being launched. We did say that Instinct is an iPhone Killer and with the price, form factor and great features, it’s definitely taking a decent stab at the Apple Phone."
Looks like Sprint is up to their old tricks again. They'll never release the numbers. Even if it was 50,000, that's tiny compared to the iPhone, which sold 150,000 and it was $600! PALM has 49 million subscribers and 56,000 employees. Is that the best they could do?
That $99 iPhone 3G is going to be too good for people to pass up.
Yeah, but with the Pre you have the ability to shut the fuck up about your phone and not seem like a pretentious douche
>> "Yeah, but with the Pre you have the ability to shut the fuck up about your phone and not seem like a pretentious douche"
Tough talk if Palm goes out of business...
@ The Walrus:
Don't lie. If you thought your phone was awesome, you'd be bragging about it.
By the comment counts on all the Apple stories, it looks like the Apple Haters are the ones that can't shut up about the iPhone. I haven't even read any of the WWDC articles in depth yet, because in the past it seems it just becomes a wank fest for the Haters, who will repeat into infinity how much they are "disappointed" with the new announcements, which is ironic since they're the same people who claim that hate Apple products.
I did check out the Pre versus iPhone poll though. Once again, the poll reflects the actual readers.
"Yeah, but with the Pre you have the ability to shut the fuck up about your phone and not seem like a pretentious douche"
Nice, I'm pretty sure Android and Symbian have that feature too.
Don't even try, Paul. Everyone knows you're Apple's mistress. Just because you know yourself that it's the same phone with a little special software and a compass you're all upset. You were really hoping for something grand and spectacular, and all you got was the 3gs.
Chapel...you must really like volunteering for Apple huh?
I mean...it wasn't compared to Apple or the iPhone. It was even mentioning ATT...and yet somehow you saw fit to bring in the iPhone.
You want a cookie?
@ The Walrus
That's the best comment here!
I haven't even read any of the WWDC articles. I'm waiting for the video to appear on Apple's web site, so that I can see it without spoilers. I've scanned the headlines on Engadget and the only things I'm sure of is that the new iPhone 3G has video and the old iPhone 3G is now priced at $99.
The only thing I really wanted to see with the iPhone was storage capacity of 32 GB. Video was sorta a blah prospect, but my niece would like it. Otherwise, the old iPhone had every I could possibly want. I mean, it has 50,000 apps, so how much does Apple really need to add.
Give me the storage I need and all the features from the 3G and I'm good. Anyway, I won't come back to read your comments because I'm sure you'll spoil it for me. Waiting patiently for the video. Peace out.
Paul, a couple questions for you:
1) Apple does not release exact numbers, either. How many iPods have been sold, Minis, Shuffles? Can't it be said that they are up to old tricks with these devices also?
2) Why are these people haters, and not you, Apple fans, and Apple themselves? You like to scour the web to find a blog where one person had some problem with a Microsoft product, then proudly cut and paste portions of those articles. They are not haters. Many Apple fans talk about how bad Vista is, when they freely admit they have never used it. They are not haters. People like yourself talk down products like the Zune, talk up iPhone/iTouch, but have never used either. You are not a hater. Apple talks about how bad Vista is, and as with today's presentation, give no details about why Win7 is bad. They are not haters. Apple even makes ethnic jokes at the expense of 1/6 of the Earth's population. They are not haters - they are all just telling the truth.
Meanwhile, people like myself who uses an iPhone, an iTouch, and a Mini who comments on problems and flaws I personally have run into, comments where things do not work as promised, comments pointing out where Apple says one thing and does another, we are all haters. If I need to reboot my computer and iTouch because my Mini lost the connection to my device, is that not a fact? But why am I a hater because of it?
Or are you just trying to cover up for your own hatred by making others look worse than you? Don't worry, it was just a rhetorical questions. You don't need to respond. We know you are just a Microsoft hating, Apple shill who puts your entire self worth and image in the product you use, even if it is not as perfect as you claim it to be.
Does the 50,000 count every paid version and every free trial as 2 apps? Because that would cut the number of apps in half. Subtract fart and nose picking apps and you're down to 5,000 apps. Subtract apps that do the same thing and you're down to 1,000. Subtract apps that you would maybe use once and you're down to about 500 good apps on the app store out of 50,000.
Sure I made these numbers up, but it seems about right. Besides, watching Apple's press conferences and their slides of statistics, they basically make numbers up themselves. I believe their slides are boarderline false advertising. Everything is always 2.64447389x this speed and capacity that, but they're not hard cold numbers with support to back them up, just a cheesy graph that shows what they want it to show.
Anyways, keep claiming 50,000 apps, but I've only found maybe 3 useful ones for my iPhone, and I could certainly live without them.
"Tough talk if Palm goes out of business..."
I bet you drive a chevy or dodge and think they will be out of biz soon to huh. What a dumb ass!
@The Walrus
Holy shit dude, you just won the entire internet. +1,000,000,000,000.
Steve Jobs is turning over in his grave right now. Apple was OUT Appled! And now Palm with eclipse the news of the "new" iPhones with news of Palm Pre AVAILABILITY!!! LOL!!!
Way to make Apple look stupid!
I agree with you man, except Steve Jobs is still alive. Just in case if you didn't know. Which it appears you didn't.
@Kaitou KID
I am VERY well aware that Jobs is alive. He is feeling better as of last week, it was an attempt at humor, and obviously failed. Still HE HAS GOT TO BE PISSED!
yeah man, no kidding. His subordinates really fucked up this WWDC IMO.
I think the Snow Leopard stuff was great, but seriously the iPhone...a let down. I really regret not lining up for the pre now :(
There just had to be a Bad thing the Pre did unh? I don't know how to feel about it? Can't the Pre just be praised for how good it is and what it can do?
Hey this isn't an Apple related post...WHAT GIVES ENGADGET!!!!!!
haha, look at everyones face in that picture
So that's what third rate hardware buyers look like. Enjoy your Pre while Palm goes under in a year!
Dude, go troll somewhere else. The Pre is a good phone. Calling it third rate just means you haven't read the write-ups.
That guy in the front doesn't look too happy.
Front of the line that is.
That's because he's been using iPhone for the last two years.
All it needs is apps.
If the backing is going to be as good as it says it is. I can see something very good coming out of this.
There were 18 on saturday, and another 8 or so showed up today. Look like its growing quickly.
Yep, they just need to wait for Pre to approve the application.
No wait they don't
Palm will still need to approve apps for their App Market, but I gather it'd be less restrictive.
Is that Jeff Probst?
Jeff Probst's grandmom.
