Sager NP9280 with Core i7 and triple SSDs is world's most powerful laptop, anchor

This one slipped by us but the world's first Core i7 laptop to ship is probably worth a double-back don't you think? The Sager NP9280 is almost certainly the same Clevo D900F we spotted at CeBIT back in March. That means a Core i7 snuggled up with Intel's X58 chipset with triple channel DDR3 memory, 1GB of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M graphics, and a 17.1-inch 1920x1200 display. No telling how long the 12-cell Lithium-Ion battery will last but if it exceeds 30 minutes of usage then we'd be impressed. As a desktop replacement, it's fully loaded with up to a trio of SATA hard disks (or SSDs), 4x built-in speakers, eSATA, HDMI and DVI video outputs, integrated 3 megapixel webcam, and 4x USB 2.0 jacks plus a single Firewire port all riding an 11.55-pound slab requiring 15.5 x 11.75 x 2.35-inches of elbow room. Unfortunately, there's no option for running dual GTX 280M GPU in SLI, for that you'll have to look to Alienware's Core 2 Extreme--based M17x. The NP9280 starts at about $2,000 though we like ours maxed out with a Core i7 975 Extreme Edition desktop processor, 12GB of DDR3 memory, and 3x 160GB SSDs for more than $7,000. But hey, that's us and we think robots are scary. Check the hover-craft inspired bottom after the break.

now all they've gotta do is fit one of those monstrous Asus Mars GPUs in there, make it water-cooled, add in a fold-out bed, a cup holder, a slide-out desk to put your desktop pc on . . waaait a minute
Looks at Alienware " ALL PowerFull" you say?......
1st comment ever. I was transferred to China 4 years ago and bought the top of the line Sager at the time because no one else had those specs. It was toast little after one year because of the heat. I had two costly repairs and each time the notebook barely lasted 3 months, again because of the heat. It became a $3000 brick after less than 24 months. There is a reason no one else is making notebook in these specs, their brand is actually worth something!
I have had my top of the line sager since, 2002, (I think), the only problem I had was cracking plastic. I paid about $2800 at the time.
It is being used at this moment, by someone at my work.
Just illustrating that your experience was the polar opposite of mine. (I have recommended them tons of times and never had someone complain either)
This thing flys!!! I have SSD for my primary HD the apps seem to open in a split second!

Someone's lap, or table, will BURN.
I got one of these last week when they started shipping. It may be big but its fast and the heat hasn't been an issue. The battery lasts about an hour
"Check the hover-craft inspired bottom after the break."
And that's why comments about it having an overheating problem are without merit. With all those fans and vents I hovers over your desk or laptop!
A nice modification to this would be the addition of a negative ion filter so it can clean the air in your house to. Just be sure to not have anything loose like paperwork laying around that may get sucked into it.
Gorgeous. I had no idea they made ultraportables like this.
Never Buy Sager. my brother bought 2 $3000 Laptops. High end systems at the time. Things were freakin huge and heavy. They run so hot. One of the 2 burnt out in 6 months. The power suppy was exactly the same size as the xbox power supply. so carrying that computer was like 15lbs all together. The brand is made in china. the support is this one chinese guy that answers the phone. no help what so ever. Im chinese so im even more ashamed of this company.
if you read all the comments of pre vious purchasers...all say over heating.... this brand truly is the worst....im out 6000 dollars on 2 laptops that were supposed to be highend please skype me if nessesary joeychinaofbrooklyn.. much love and please do not buy from this company
can engadget do a "shame on you" program like on the tv news. seriously it seems like a lot of people have been burnt by this company...i mean i had system errors everytime i tryed booting cause the main battery ran out so quick if it wasnt directly connected to the outlet. anyone got messed up computers from sager... lets start a suit... skype me....... joeychinaofbrooklyn
That is the thickest laptop I've laid my eyes on. It's 1.15 inches thicker than the Inspiron 1150 "fattop" we own. And it's 11.55 lbs compared to the Inspiron 1150's 7.8 lbs weight. I wonder if this'll motivate Intel to make a laptop version of the Core i7 or will manufacturers start to use the Core i5 to create crazily high-performance laptops. And how can that thing make it through 30 minutes, even with a 12-cell battery. I think they should have made the DVD drive external, so the laptop would weigh less. Besides, that thing is going to melt if you play a game on it. Core i7 should be reserved for desktops. What are they thinking, putting a power-hungry CPU inside a laptop chassis?
Everyone seems to complain alot about the price tag, as if Segar purposely built this machine to insult people on a budget. If you can't afford it, then you can't afford it...don't make excuses like "oh, it's so ugly" or "oh, it's so heavy" or "oh, I can built one better and cheaper". If you can, then go do it and don't lose anymore sleep over things you can't change.
I think it's a sweet machine. It looks like a laptop from 1998, weighs a ton, and probably can't be unplugged from the wall. However, it sounds like it will run Crysis without any trouble. Sold.
I'm buying one...not for the looks or even the i7 processor, but rather, because I'm rich, and I can.
=)
pretty cool, but way too expensive
Bought a Sager laptop about a year ago (NP5790, I believe). Same specs on a Dell would have been >$3000, but got mine for around $1800. (Win)
It's been running perfect since then. Used it as a portable gaming laptop a bit, mostly as a desktop replacement for my secondary PC (powered on 24/7 for quite a few months). Hasn't overheated, no issues whatsoever. Also, it's a gorgeous laptop. Not too colorful, a matte black with orange trim.
Yes, it's heavy, but I've got a netbook for portability. Yes, it does get a little warm, but my Asus EEE gets almost as warm.
I would recommend Sager laptops to anyone that was looking for a quality, powerful laptop. (And, I have done so, and none that I've recommended to have had any complaints)
Seems to me that those complaining about issues may actually be the minority and just coming out of the woodworks now that there's a Sager post.
This world's most powerful Laptop is shipping now!
