LOL! All the people that complain about the number of Apple-related posts by commenting just add to the comment count. So at the end of the year when Engadget posts their "Top 10 most commented posts of the year" and 9 out of those 10 are Apple-related, they can can comment on how Apple-related posts get too many comments! ENGADGET: You need to be making a big big big deal over the inability for existing 3G customers to not be able to get the upgrade pricing until 18 months! How is that not the major headline of the day? That is gigantic! Most people I know who have the 3G think they're going to waltz into an AT&T store in 2 weeks and pick up a new phone for $199. How AT&T would not give people an option to just add like 6 months onto a new 3GS contract is beyond me.
No, Engadget should focus on how almost everything "new" to the 3Gs could easily be accomplished via software on the 3G and 1st gen. Voice commands...software based, video recording...software based. Sure it may be faster on this new one, but that's because of the hardware, which in my opinion isn't worth a new contract or paying for a new phone. The only good thing about the new phone is the compass, as my 3G tends to direct me in the wrong direction, but still, that alone isn't worth a new contract or price of phone.
Maybe because that is the way it is for EVERY cell phone user with a contract. Owning an iPhone 3g doesn't make you special. That's life.
It's called a smart phone. If you own one, you should be smart enough to understand your contract.
I hope people start talking about this a LOT more in the coming weeks. I believe this is almost worthy of a class action lawsuit. I will tell you that if you lose your iphone, you will be charged FULL retail price regardless of your standing with AT&T. I lost my16gb 3g two weeks ago and was expected to pay $600 to replace it. Or? Or you must go with another phone and adjust the contract accordingly-including fees and penalties. It is SO unbelievably misleading, hence the class action.
And it is available with the FREE 3.0 software update for all iphones.
Apple aren't the only company guilty of this! Nokia N96 released October 2008, N97 on sale now I don't see my provider offering me an upgrade to the N97!

What is "Quick Time"
It's the name of the program I have to manually replace with VLC player in order for my boss' Macbook to play AVI files with no quality loss.
After a few days trying to get a high quality video compressed into WMV format with good image quality and a small file size, I will hear nothing bad said about QuickTime. The H.264 codec turns out video files with higher quality and smaller file sizes than I've managed to get out of various WMV authoring tools. No wonder Apple uses it since they have to pay for the bandwidth of streaming these videos.

Playing catchup? Initially yes. Now, no. The Pre will be out for 2 weeks when 3.0 and the new phone is released. Then it looks like everyone will be playing catchup.

This is the news of the day in the tech world, get over it. Pre was one phone and got attention. Apple releases/details New OS, Upgraded and new laptops, new phone, new phone OS, etc. Its a big Apple tech day, why is the attention a shock??
If Microsoft or any other company had a presser like this one they would get the same attention.
No, if Microsoft or any other company had released a new phone or any product it would not have gotten 10 posts in a row about it. Especially considering there is hardly anything new to this phone and almost every "feature" could be implemented in prior phones via a simple software update.

If Microsoft released a phone, new version of windows mobile, gave a preview of windows 7, announced laptops, etc...........I think you could expect a little coverage.

Great comparison, windows 7 beta. I remember that press event, it was awesome, so much to talk about. The only douchebags are the ones whining about these stories. What phone would have video at a good enough resolution that you would actually want to edit video on?

The G1 does video editing, built in? Huh, never heard of that. Most smartphones you verbally tell it to play similar artists and they will? Huh, never heard of that. So it looks like the G1 has some nice tech inside, I guess that equals "every other smartphone on the market and less".

some of these people are just idiots. Yeah, there are lots of phones out there that do some of the things the iPhone does, but none that do all of what it does! Not to mention the ease of usage and the simplistic, yet advanced, UI!!!! These haters are the same people that don't understand why Macs are loved and used so much. The user experience is second to none on the iPhone, and I have yet to meet a person that used an iPhone and thought it was difficult and had nothing less than praise for the phone. Granted, I would have liked to see a front facing camera and a little different design, but I must say that Apple continues to improve the iPhone and the 3GS is yet another example.
Did anyone else notice that Voice commander sounds similar (if not same) as Windows Mobile (6.x native) voice commander.

I was just told that because I work for ATT I will not be able to buy the new phone until customer demand is met (super pissed). So like the last launch they are expecting stores to be flooded and stock to limited through the first few weeks. I predict apple will be all smiles come next month. I'd also like to say all the people slamming the iphone should put their time and engery into something constructive. Maybe like a hate apple club that designs a phone to meet everybody's needs and expectations, it could be called the " I hate the Iphone". I'd buy one! Regardless of all the negativity in the apple posts this phone will sell tons and I will enjoy using it.
