Video: iPhone 3GS looks the same but it's not, really
We know what you're thinking, and so does Apple: the iPhone 3G S look just like the existing iPhone 3G. True, on the outside. The glory's in the higher performing guts (that will remain a mystery until teardown and possibly beyond). We're still not 100 percent clear what features will be 3G S only (we're sorting that out now), but video recording seems to be one of 'em even though jailbreakers have been recording video on iPhones for ages. Must be a quality thing. See Apple's first iPhone 3G S ad after the break.

first? fail
Epic
Yes, you fail because you posted first.
no, last. In life.
Must be a quality thing? No it's a let me squeeze some more money out you pockets thing!
They could have at least changed the bezel...
Same crap cracking plastic backs...
Oh Apple so drole!
YAY, lets wait till January to see a front facing camera.
Wait, we might not get it till June next year. I really am hoping Apple will release its own Image Editing app in January.... Who the heck would want a compass? A $300 compass that is.
does the apple glow??
Yo Engadget. Why is this article seeming like a bad kid's mother defending the kid's actions?
Come on. I know you love Apple - sure the insides are probably different. Just not compellingly different.
And yet i wonder, why are you guys replying to MY FIRST POST EVER to voice your opinion? Create your own post damn it !
Are you kidding? Can you really not grasp the purpose of the magnetometer? With an accelerometer you can only sense certain movements of the phone, with the addition of a mag. you can sense literally ANY movement of the phone. It will allow for far more advanced motion controlled apps since they'll have far more accurate readings of movement in ANY direction. Yeah it'll be able to know what you're heading is without having to start moving first but that's hardly what it's real purpose will be.
NOW with video?!
You are all wrong. It is completely different. You will know once you buy it and crack it open. You will see alien tech that won't exist for the next 20 years. All hail Apple and its fanbois!
Gosh... can't believe people actually pay for this crap.
I'm just happy they have a 32GB now. I have 20 gigs in music i would like to carry with me. I could sell my old iPod and just have to carry one device.
Now to see if AT&T has a special deal (plan wise) when it's released....
"video recording seems to be one of 'em even though jailbreakers have been recording video on iPhones for ages. Must be a quality thing."
I like Apple as much as or more than the next guy (love my MacBook Pro and my iPhone), but there's absolutely no defending Apple regarding video recording. Especially since a video recorder app is already written, there is absolutely NO reason whatsoever that current iPhone models should not be able to record video. Cycorder on my jailbroken iPhone produces some very good quality videos. This is greed and an attempt to help push a new model that otherwise wouldn't be all that appealing to a lot of people.

cool
Engadget is full of Apple! Ruuuuuuuunn!!!!
Maybe they can bake us a pie with all of those Apples?
It must have something to do with that small little conference no one is paying attention to. I think its called WWDC.
engadget stop making excuses for this shitty excuse of a "new phone"
iTow the line
engadget is so full of shit.
"iPhone 3G S looks the same but it's not, really"
"We're still not 100 percent clear what features will be 3G S" but since it is made by apple it's gotta be awesome !!!
engadet + apple iphone 3gs, now coming with even more failure !!!!!
This isn't even that big of an upgrade to warrant all these constant posts.
My idea, keep em in 1-2 posts, along with regular gadget news...
thoroughly underwhelming, and there's no way i'm paying $399 that att offered me to upgrade to 3gs from 3g.
Yeah I agree, No need to upgrade my 3G for this...
Good for 2G owners who's service contract is about to end and looking for a new iPhone. I'll be looking out for WWDC 2010 when they release a real follow up to the 3G (I hope..)
@M the original iPhone owners are upgrade eligible regardless of when they started their contract.... so they would have been happier if iPhone 3Gs was actually the iPhone 3G that was released last year.
I tried the Pre yesterday, and it's not bad. Hmm... now if the Pre comes out on GSM carrier, I am not sure if 3Gs or Pre would replace my iPhone 2G.
pal :)
hey its rock99! been forever, ya digg. you're my favorite commenter :)
Is it true that the Iphone can't do Bluetooth file transfer? That's the reason I left Verizon for AT&T back in what 2003! Verizon deliberately disabled the Bluetooth protocols on their handsets to force you to pay to transfer pics, video, mp3's, over their networks. Here we are6 years later and one of the most advanced handsets can't do Bluetooth file transfer? That is a real shame.

Where the fuck are the specs already? Enough with the FLUFF damnit.
Apple doesn't release specs about the processor , available ram for the iphone.
I also would like to see the actual specs.
I'm waiting for some real head-to-head tests as well. I wanna *see* just how faster this newer iPhone model is. Just curious.
Saddened that the 3.0 firmware update won't enable video recording... that sounds not only lame, but fucking lazy as well.
You would get crappy video quality.
It might have to do with the camera itself.
I know people have jailbroken old iPhones to enable video recording with the old cameras... did they do 30FPS VGA?
the CMOS seems to refresh around 15-30fps when in photo shoot mode.... (it jumps around while compensating for light and such. Resolution looks to be around VGA..... (its full rez on the iphone screen atleast).
Seems to be more of a software issue holding back video recording then hardware.
remember how Razors did video on generic firmware but not with ATT or Verizon firmware?
Check out youtune for clips taken from jailbroken iPhones. To achieve 30 fps you have to drastically reduce the quality and they look choppy at best if you don't.
Don't take mine, or anyone else's word for it, see for yourself.
Still Williams has a point - though apple doesn't want to introduce this feature as half assed, there's still no reason that at all that video recording shouldn't be ready to go now. I mean common, the 3rd build of a phone and apple is just now bringing a basic feature to the phone that should have been there since launch.
lazy indeed - also see 'Greed' on Wikipedia
I wish people would stop harping about the megapixel count of the camera. > megapixels does not = better quality.
Video is cool.
Too bad the exterior design isn't. Apple's design department must have been on vacation during the last 10 months or so. Sure there's not too many was of differentiating the design but a matte rear casing or some other subtle changes wouldn't have been too much to ask for.
It is very cool. how are things in 2005?
How many ways can you design a slab of electronics with a touch screen? Its not like they need to design buttons and keyboards with it. You people really need to think before typing.
It is very cool. how are things in 2005?
It was cool on my Nokia 3650 back in 2004 as well :)
Should get a small Canon SD960 IS then... A normal phone and a small point&shoot with HD video is the best really. I got screw 2 years ago buying a Sharp phone with 5mp and 30fps VGA video. It was expensive and really crappy.
Very strange, that they didn't change the form factor even slightly.
Makes it easier to resist.
I dont know... 3GS looks thicker to me....
wtf replied to wrong person-fail
