Apple launching free iDisk iPhone app for viewing and sending stored docs -- still no substitute for a file system
Buried under the considerable stack of WWDC newness is news that Apple is launching an iPhone iDisk application for MobileMe users alongside iPhone OS 3.0. It lets users browse through and view their remotely stored docs, but there doesn't seem to be an offline component to the app (at least none is mentioned in Apple's brief writeup) -- though a feature that lets you email a download link to an iDisk file is welcome. Naturally, there are plenty of apps that already access iDisk, WebDAV, Google Docs and other online storage systems, and offer added functionality like local caching to boot, but it's at least nice to have a bit of first party support when it comes to basic iDisk browsing for users who are already paying for the privilege -- we just hope it grows into so much more.

@dagamer43
the guy who wrote the "RANT" was an illegal mexican!!! why should I listen to him about anything?
Yeah, file system management is weak on the iPhone OS by default. If you want to do anything advanced I highly recommend jailbreaking. My Phone has be jailbroken and working perfectly for a few months now and I have full access to the filesystem via a nice console app and a decent 'finder' app.
Of course jailbreaking isn't all roses - you have to wait for the jailbreak community to catch up with each to OS update and when you do the update your jailbreak apps/docs get wiped (need to back them up and restore yourself). Still, given the highly active jailbreak/hacking community ant the interesting things they're doing on the iPhone I think there's a really compelling argument to take the leap. Especially for people that want to be able to tinker more with their phones.
No offline support. Hey Apple, please remember that you also make this device called the iPod Touch. It doesn't have internet access everywhere, so perhaps you should rethink this "no offline support" thing? It's bad enough your computer business has turned into an afterthought. Are you going to do the same thing to the iPod too?
iPhone. iPhone. iPhone. I'm sick of everything being about the iPhone.
the iPod touch is for people that can't afford their deposit through AT&T... why would anybody care about them?
"iPhone. iPhone. iPhone. I'm sick of everything being about the iPhone."
Maybe you should move to a different planet then.
"computer business has turned into an afterthought"
REALLY? they've just completely redesigned all their laptops, upgraded their internal specs, did a major product reshuffle (13" macbook pro), aggressively reduced prices. if anything, they have stepped up their computer game in a big way compared to the g4 days and before.
some people really need a dose of reality before spouting off on the interwebs.
Just use dropbox instead. Same thing and it's free.
Somehow I feel others will follow nokia bb lg pre etc
LOL, filesystems are too complex for most mac users, just like windows 7, 3G (until they released the 3G iphone), A2DP (until iphone 3.0), microSD cards, and multitasking.
Macs have had multitasking and filesystems for over 25 years, what the hell are you blathering about?
Oh I see. You think only Mac users have iPhones. That just means you're stupid. Glad I could help you with that.
Very dissapointed with the new iPhone 3gs. No oled
screen, no front facing camera. The 3gs should have been the 3g.
I am sure in less then a year appl€ will make another unnecessary small incremental change and sell us another device.
I don't need voice command, what would
be freaking useful is a shortcut to the wifi and Bluetooth toggles.
Shouldn't Apple let us sync data folders/files through iTunes? Would it really be that hard? iTunes does that now but only with "media" type files. Oh wait, we can get that functionality if we can spend money on MobileMe. I believe we have an answer.

You mean when its not crashing or randomly resets? I have a handful of friends that own the touch pro/Fuze its garbage!!! if your going to say how great winmo is your completely ignoring the fact of resistive touch screens are garbage! if winmo was so great why do companies have to make "skins" to put ONTOP of winmo in order to get people to want to buy it!! the iPhone is a fun device to use everything else is more of a chore than anything, so please stop being a complete tool.
Why are the tech blogs jumping on this all of a sudden? I have had this app for months, and I got it from the app store. It is not made by Apple, it is just like any other app out there. It does work great, btw, but Apple posts a little info about this app on their website and all of a sudden, "Apple launching free iDisk iPhone app?" It is ALREADY launched, has been launched for months, and was not launched by Apple.
He is probably talking about a new different app, you know by Apple as the article says.
And I maintain that resistive touch screens are superior at handwriting recognition and working through outside clothing/ gloves.
Skins? You want to talk about skins? People jailbreak their iPhone so that they can put skins on it.

Now if they'd just have a free app to do "Find My iPhone" so that I didn't have to pay $100/year to subscribe to MobileMe, which I've heard doesn't even work, that would be great! This kind of stuff should have come free with an iPhone from the beginning.
Right, because for you everything should be free.
Dropbox (mentioned earlier) is a fantastic semi-free service that blows iDisk away for cross-platform usefulness, and features. They are currently beta testing an iPhone app that does offer offline access and emailing of file links, and that is only the beginning.
Come on engadget. Check your facts before you write the article. If you go to www.apple.com/mobileme and select coming soon, you will see in the description of the upcoming iDisk app...and then you would see that after selecting and viewing a file, it will be stored locally on your device.
I think it's funny that the only people here commenting just want to bash the iPhone and Apple. If you don't like, it don't buy it. Simple as that.
iDisk? well then iPass.
OR you could just use Box.net which basically does the exact same thing.
I think the cloud services for windows mobile and the already proven file system is why windows mobile continues to be so successful.
I think it's a step in the right direction but there are several apps that browse iDisk out there. This one http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/products/docprinter.html will let you print iDisk docs as well. itunes: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=301654964&mt=8
