Looks like Palm's
webOS Reset Doctor, intended for resetting
Pre smartphones with a mangled system, has been outed to the public at large along with a very special bonus for hackers and other programming enthusiasts: a complete 195MB root image of webOS itself. Code-inclined individuals on the
PreCentral forums have already cracked open the ROM and are getting an unfettered glimpse at the Palm's new platform, which for the layman means it should open the doors for some crazy Pre hacking and possibly hint, by way of unfinished / unused code, of what's to come for the platform -- and if we're really lucky, maybe someone will be able to look at this and move us one step closer to an unlocked Pre that could jump
onto Verizon's network. Amusingly, you also get to see all the comments left by the devs in the code, guaranteeing a few good chuckles from others who can relate. Intrepid computer science-ers can hit up the read link to find the appropriate .jar file or just follow along with all the fun in the forum discussion.
i for one, stfu idiot
"I for one, shut the fuck up idiot"?
Doesn't roll off the tongue eh? Next...
What exactly am I supposed to shut that prevents me from typing?
Yours courteously,
'idiot'
The lid of your laptop?
I know, it just doesn't make sense!
Maybe all of your fingers in a guillotine?
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take those under advisement.
(But there's probably a Pre app for typing without fingers...)
I got a chance to fool around with the Palm Pre and thought it was an amazing phone. It didnt really feature anything that would make me "forget" about my iphone though.
Hm, I guess the memory wipe feature still needs work.
maybe a good slap in the face too
Where'd you get that background? I've noticed it a couple times on different phones...
Maybe a good slap in the face too
give me liberty or give me death.....gsm is liberty btw
Maybe now someone will make a default home screen.
I personally would prefer my phone keypad to be the designated home screen since it is a PHONE.
Cool now lets get Yahoo and MSN messangers to work on this Platform. Also make a way to use SSL for MS Outlook EAS.
Both are coming soon. From the ROM image, Palm's working on it. Also from the ROM, it'll come whether Palm finishes it or not.
It means there's an app for that too!
Won't this mean that we'll start seeing Chinese Pre knock-offs with the actual Web O/S installed?
Uh, WebOS is Linux-based. Aren't they required by the GPL to make the source for the OS available? The user interface is just an application that runs on the OS, as on all Linux systems.
The Linux base is required GPL, correct. That doesn't mean that anything that runs on a platform that uses GPL code has to be GPL. The WebOS base consists of the Linux OS bases and then the proprietary WebOS Components.
Think of them as the equivelant of X11 + DE, but they don't have to rls this source code.
Lot's of references inside of the image titled "Castle" - wasn't that the codename for Palm Eos?
For example, Castle.xml:
etc. Very intriguing.
maybe they want to add it to the tv show
No, codename for Pre. Eos = Pixie.

Lot's of references to Castle hardware. Last comment was butchered.
I wish I knew what this all meant, but if they can come up with a teetering app or a GSM convert, or 3d games itll be cool
can some one tell me if this is that type of "break"through?
Theoretically (and I'm speculating here) it could be possible to use this to get direct hardware access without going through Palm like the Classic app creators had to, in which case it could help 3d game development?
There's no GSM radio in the current Pre, so there's nothing you can do there but wait for Palm to release the GSM Pre.
/usr/lib/luna in the filesystem has settings for a bunch of GSM carriers, including T-Mobile and ATT in the US.
Dammit Android may have been shot in the face......
It's a good thing I'm waiting for the Christmas 2009 lineup.... hacks should be all over the Pre by then.
would an android/webOS hybrid be possible? that would be sick
That's my question as well. Does this make it easier for crafty devs to come up with ports to other devices? I'm running Android on my Touch. Does the future hold the possibility of running WebOS as well? How awesome would it be to have a choice between WinMo 7, Android and WebOS?
please port to iphone...
Won't help since there's no physical keyboard. WebOS doesn't have a soft-keyboard.
I know....the iphone os needs help though...
people have the source, they can write in a software keyboard
I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that anyone THAT into this new palm probably doesn't have plans this evening anyway.
Just sayin'
Probably because they have to go to work tomorrow. Just sayin'....
This is huge. I could see myself leaving ATT for Sprint just to play with pure, uncut, code. ::sniffs::
Doesn't seem like ATT is coming out with a decent Android phone anytime.
Google had this with Android, where you could type any command anywhere on the phone, and Engadget called it a "bug".
Can anybody tell me what type of wallpaper is displayed on the phone?
