Samsung shows off video-capable e-paper prototype

E-paper displays capable of playing video aren't exactly a completely new development, but Samsung seems to be particularly proud of its latest prototype, which makes use of some new, slightly mysterious technology to let you switch between e-paper and video modes. That's apparently possible in part thanks to an active matrix panel that uses "a kind of cholesteric liquid crystal" which, oddly enough, has so far been primarily used in displays on flash drives. Given that history, the 10.2-inch panel itself is expectedly a little lackluster when it comes to the core specs, with it packing a mere 320 x 240 resolution, 64 colors, and a response time of 25 ms "or less." Of course, it is still just a prototype, and Samsung seems confident that it'll be able to make the necessary improvements before it tuns into an actual product.

Meh the U.S governments had it for years... =P
Actually, the DEA, CIA, and LAPD *DID* funnel cocaine into black communities in the 80's and early 90's. There is overwhelming evidence to support the accusation, from smuggling routes all the way down to the individuals (narcs, police and drug dealers) in the targeted communities.
@bakari
You realize just saying their is overwhelmingly evidence of something and then not providing any evidence at all does not prove anything more than you just stating your opinion?
Furthermore, there is overwhelming evidence that i assassinated jfk and that it was martians who attacked the world trade center and islamic fundamentalists.
Bakari is right. The CIA did put coke in black communities in the 80s and 90s. It's kind of like how the laws for smoking cocaine are way worse than the laws for snorting cocaine because black people smoke it more than white people.

any quick google search would find you this information
By the way, you didn't assasinate JFK, that would be Lee Harvey Oswald, and he is dead.
paper that can show video? nice.
Can't wait to make origami cranes out of them. =)
I feel this defeats the point of e-ink. The idea is e-ink only uses power to refresh the image, so you can look at a static image (like a book page) without using any energy. But if it's refreshing many times a second I don't see how it will be any more efficient then a normal LCD or equivalent tech. But hey, maybe some people like having a screen they can't use in the dark.
I was going to say the exact same thing. If they want flexible, fast moving displays, they might as well work towards flexible OLED displays. E-Paper is for static displays with super-low power usage.
Couldn't they use this for newspaper reading on a train or bus?
Like in those futuristic movies ... or at Hogwarts?
I say to both of you, RTFA. "..makes use of some new, slightly mysterious technology to let you switch between e-paper and video modes."
The point of this is to have a color e-paper display that can play video from time to time. Which could, you know, be useful from time to time.
Like how about e-textbooks that could have animated diagrams.
Indeed (to the original poster), refreshing 60 times a second will ruin battery life even on real e-paper, and they mention 'liquid crystals' which means it's probably using polarizing and hence gets all the disadvantages of LCD in the mix like angle dependency, sigh.
Stop trying to turn e-paper in LCD's people, find a better new way to improve ti already goddammit.
So where is the e-pencil to write on the e-paper???? and what happened if you screwed up, how would you use the e-raser??
I applaud your effort at comedy. You're well on your path to being a clown.
Would be e-eraser, or on the asus model eee-e-eraser.
But actually writing would be nice and should be doable.
sick. Cant wait to be watching the videos on page 3 of the sun newspaper
Nice this might easily kill Plasma or LCD in the distance future.
Not sure it will...
(Thats kind of like saying when a new pair of headphones come out "these will revolutionize the home cinema audio market")
25ms on e-paper?
Do you realize how awesome that is?
I remember (was around 2003, I guess) the time when LCD monitors had that kind of refresh rates!
Bring it on, Samsung!
Hurray! Samsung did it again!
Now what does this do?
They should stop concentrating on the speed and start concentrating on the resolution. Seriously if you're calling it e-paper people already expect it to be slow; obviously it's not dense enough or fast enough to be primary display technology, so if you're not about to make a new term for not-quite-epaper-and-not-quite-a-monitor screens, you'd have to start socializing the category before you start releasing products in it, otherwise markets aren't going to know what to do with it.
Also do we know the comparative cost per square inch on this versus other e-paper systems or color e-paper systems?
