Samsung's Omnia II / GT-I8000 leaks early?
Oh look, something other than a Pre or iPhone... it's Samsung's GT-I8000, or Omnia II / Omnia 2 as it's expected to be known by the time it launches. Spec-counters will want to listen in close 'cause the GT-I8000 comes packing a 3.7-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) AMOLED display (presumably the same display just revealed by Samsung last week) with an 8.1 megapixel camera lit by dual-LEDs capable of recording VGA video at 30fps. The Lithuanian on-line retailer responsible for leaking the specs (which have now been removed) says we'll see a 1500mAh battery powering HSDPA data with a custom "cubic" UI (looking very similar to the UI on the S8000 Jet) riding atop Windows Mobile. With a superior spec-sheet it has to be a superior phone right?

So do I!
Hey now, bash on phones all you want buddy, BUT leave the cheese out of it. This is a tech blog and ill not have you willy nilly bashing every Havarti, Gouda, and Swiss based articles.
Something tells me this isn't gonna be a WinMo 6.5 handset. Doesn't it stipulate that it must have a Windows key to be 6.5??
Maybe the Windows key is simply disguised as a cube.
Thats what I'm talking about. No Iphone or anything of some sort. Way 2 go Microsoft, oh by the way Windows Phone is the new name Microsoft will use for its OS. Way 2 go Microsoft.
"That's what I'm talking about. No iPhone or anything of that sort. Way to go Microsoft. Oh, by the way, Windows Phone is the new name Microsoft will use for its OS. Way to go Microsoft."
You are welcome.
Holy moly! The WinMo equivalent of the Omnia HD? Damn this will send HTC packing.
not really. Hate to say it but there are plenty of girls and gerls out there who love the HTC phones.
now if they would only start including 3mm jacks on thier phones
3mm? Last I heard, 3.5mm was all the rage. When did 3mm jacks come about?
just wondering why are they only putting in a 8mpx? Since this is the 3rd "Omnia" phone, it should get a 12mpx to compete with SE Satio. Samsung have had 12mpx camera in their phone in Korea for the last 2-3 years now....
Please Samsung dont rush to cram 12mpx on every phone. The megapixels race is ridiculous and not required on phones. 8.1mpx is plenty!
Personally, until I see proof that a 12MP camera in a phone can produce good images under low light I will avoid them and buy something with a lower megapixel count. However, I expect I'm in a minority and that Joe Public will continue to equate more megapixels with better image quality. So, in that respect, I guess you are right that it would make sense for Samsung to use their new sensor as much as possible.
@poke: Go check GSM Arena. The Satio 12MP camera has basically creamed the Pixon's, and the firmware is not finalized yet.
Sometimes, those extra MPs do help resolve more detail. And that's coming from a dude who shoots a 6MP DSLR.
I've used every increment of resolution in phone cameras since before it was even mpx. I know for sure it is getting more difficult to differentiate between one taken by a 5mpx and a 8mpx camera. However, I can still see the difference, not on a printed photo but on an enlarged screen.
Why do I do that? Because I can and because it is easier and more accurate to edit.
Hardware sounds great but WinMo on top of that, what a waste.
Get WinMo 6.5 to support capacitive screens pls, kthxbye.
That home button design is ugly, like from the http://incubedesign.ro/ , it has a very iphone look, just another iphone wanabee :))
That dorin_zlx is stupid, like iEye, Paul A. Chapel, Quix, and about a hundred other fanboys. He has a very iPhone Fanboy style of writing, just another iPhone Fanboy wannabee.
OR MAYBE THEY ARE ALL THE SAME??

Long Dong Gone, is that you?
You said what about my mother?
Who says we'll let you join? ;-)
I almost considered switching from WM to webOS or iphoneOS, but then i realized my WM phone does everything i need- and anything i don't like about it XDA-developers have already fixed/hacked/cracked.
Exactly how feel, especially since iphone is just getting to features i have been using for while( ie. mms)
I can wholeheartedly agree with this comment.
I read through the article & thought WOW, what a great phone. Then I read that it has Windows Mobile & I thought Sh_t, what a great phone this could have been. Fat & Clunky operating systems is so 19th century.
Sweet, i just dont like samsung's UI.
Good thing you can make Windows Mobile do and look like how ever you want then. As soon as this is out MoDaCo will customize it way better than Samsung ever could just like they did with the Omnia already. I put a Manila2D 6.5 Beta ROM on a co-workers Omnia and it runs great. http://www.modaco.com/category/342/i9x0-omnia-http-omnia-modaco-com/
They had me until I saw Winslow will be the default OS
As exciting as these features sound, I have a sneaky feeling as an American consumer, we've all been had, jipped, hoodwinked y'see? Point in case? That sorry excuse for an Android phone AT&T is branding.
But for real. Buy this phone. K? ::cocks gun at kitten::
wow engadget please be a little more bitter about your precious iphone
I don't think they are being bitter. You need to realize these guys are fucking tech journalists, they have probably had 200 fucking winmo phones, probably have dozens of them floating around the office. So if anyone has a right to be disappointed with a POS winmo phone with epic specs its them.
Quit being such a negative nancy. :)
WOW...it can do 30 fps VGA video. APPLE MUST BE PISSED! They just invented that technology yesterday. Again, everyone plays catchup to the Big A.
OR... Right. really cool specs, however, that UI looks an awful loot like touchWiz, which I hated on the Eternity. I had to return that phone it sucked so much (for me). It also turned me off to total touch screen phones in general. I like a few buttons, especialy since I'm not a rich snob who always has freshly manicured hands. The whole "working for a living" thing. And I realize the Eternity is low end touchscreen phone, but if the UI was weak. If its the same UI on an Impresion, and Omina, it should all be the same- same ability to customize, etc.Otherwise, its false advertising.
sorry - wrong page
This phone + Android and I'm sold
Not happening! At least not this one.
I have had hands on experience with this phone last weekend. There is only thing I Could say about this, best WinMo 6.1 phone out there....
1. Just another WINDOWS mobile phone with 6.1 and Nice Samsung UI running on it. Probably the best windows mobile phone I have seen. yes, that mean it beats the HTC touch pro interface outright!!!..
2. Not an Iphone/ Palm pre killer. Still sluggish UI over all....
3. Lighter in Weight.... I am sure it would run cheap.. its coming on to Verizon first!!
I currently have an Omnia i900 (win mobile 6.1) god I hope this has win mobile 6.5 & lets hope win mob 6.5 works, just to make my i900 usable i had to install software that should come with the Os.
Thumbcal - A usable calendar (win mob 6.1 sucks)
HTC X Button - So when u press X it actually closes the program
Notif Blinker - the power button flashes if you have messages even in sleep mode
Tread software - sms threaded or unthreaded you choose.
All this should be standard hopefully will be on win mobile 6.5
Also lets hope the camera is 10 times better than the one on i900, outside shots are perfect but move indoors or at night and my 3 megapixel old phone takes a better picture.
Looks like a great phone....I already have the "Eternity" and it is super.
Would buy this if it were S60 like the Omnia HD, why do they keep flip flopping ?
I bet all you people screaming Android... have never actually played with an Android running phone.. im so sick of hearing you all say that every single phone with Android and you get it.
By the way WinMo still has so many useful features that are very matured.
Hope it's upgradable to WinMo 6.5 or WinMo 7.
AT&T?
Guys, Im quite certain that this phone will be packing a Cortex-class ARM processor approaching speeds of 850mhz, if not more. If so this would be the fastest and most powerful hardware ever seen in a smartphone. Along with that it will probably have twice the memory as before, so as long as the OS isn't complete garbage it should still be a very quick device indeed.
I've also heard rumors that this device will packing a more powerful GPU which will support OpenGL 2.0, which if harnessed properly by developers, which push it past the PSP in terms of graphics/interface acceleration. And its a phone!
Seriously though, I think a properly streamlined WinMo 6.5 running on this hardware could really spell a winner, and finally quell all the /rants about its performance. If this device cant run it well, nothing can.
Samsung appears to be the "SONY" of the 21st Century, except that It seems that they are simultaneously dissing their own product and ability, while introducing newer and competing products.
It's probably an organizational faux pas.
They rolled out a sample 40 inch oled display in 2005, two years before everyone was extolling the wonder and virtues of Sony's 14 incher.
Subsequently they rolled out an oled plan indicating their agenda for oled, that showed deferred expectations for oled television products way into 2015 or so.
Then, an announcement attributed to them, that mass poduction of consumer oled televisions in serious sizes (bigger than Sony's) will be masses produced within the next couple of years.
I quit waiting andI got a 58" Samsung Plasma. Good price, good product. I have been buy Sony Products since my reel to reel tape recorder in 1970!
It is kind of disappointing to see a great company like that disintegrate...
...on the other hand, it is kind of exciting to witness the ingenuity of competitors vying for the number one spot in consumer electronics on planet earth for the 21st century.
Wow,
Yeah,
It's here
http://www.tinhte.com/forum/t222907/
Specs:
800Mhz Samsung SoC (ARM 11 based)
Windows Mobile 6.1 (later upgrade to 6.5 depending on Microsoft)
480x800 AMOLED touch screen (resistive but very responsive)
HSDPA 7.2mbps
Opera Browser
HD video playback - looks gorgeous on the large screen
3.5 mm audio jack
BT, Wifi, GPS, - the regular gamut of features etc, etc, etc.
GUI is a huge leap from earlier samsung phones and so far the best amongst all Windows Mobile phones.
The UI is not just limited to the first 2 or 3 screens. Every application on the phone is re-written for an amazing slick user experience.
The user never has to come face to face with the horrendous Win32 applications and its ui.
I'm generally an Apple fanboy, but this time I must applaud Samsung for an outstanding achivement - This device is literally a PC in your hand. Microsoft should feel ashamed that an OEM has written much better GUI and applications.
I have an iPhone and have ordered a Pre, but I strongly feel this offering from Samsung might pale everything in comparison.
