Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit gets its own specifications breakdown
Generally speaking, we don't much care about the nuts and bolts behind a thrill ride. If it thrills, it's a winner; if not, it's a failure. But the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a horse of a different color, and being that it's described as the planet's most technologically advanced coaster, we figured it prudent to pass along the details that only true nerds could appreciate. For starters, each rider will have access to a touchpad in order to select their own ride soundtrack from a 30 song library. There's also a half dozen cameras in the ride vehicle alongside eight others along the track, all of which combine to assemble a take-home video of the experience if you'd like. Speaking of, check out the demo vid just past the break, and look for this to open to the public later this summer.

It would suck if it glitched in the middle of a ride.
Like if it started playing some Jonas Bros. half way through the ride and you were stuck with it for the rest of the coaster ride... 0_o
Pretty much any roller coaster sucks if it glitches in the middle. Would have been better if it was a real video and not animated.
"Generally speaking, we don't much care about the nuts and bolts"
I do! I hope they are all therein place or its gonna be another "Final Destination 3"
LMAO @ the Jonas Brothers comment. And in the middle you're spontaneously dowsed in hot white foam. How about it girls? Do you want to feel the Jonas Brother's hot white foam?
sweet wonder if they have any ricky blaze in the song selection
They spelled "rocket" wrong.
Its supposed to be like Rock It
But does it? I'm not convinced.
Mmm wonder what happens if it BSODs
ya get to start again from the beginning!
Here's a full POV of the coaster.... which has been delayed to open.

Hollywood ride in Universal Studios Orlando? sigh... I thought we were getting a new ride here.
It'd would've been sweet to umm, you know, actually get to see the coaster.
3D renders ftw?

There ya go... they had to take the lift off to fix something the other day, looks like it's almost done.
Yeah, its hard to make a video of something that's not really there yet.
Meh
Ugh.
Im not a fan of these "gimmicks" they use on these coasters. I prefer engineering marvels that deliver unequaled thrills, like kingda ka.
Also, the ride video is going to cost an arm and a leg for 2 mins of footage, like the pics do. :/ Dorney park had in ride video for Talon, and the pricing was just absurd.
Kinda Ka is awesome, but it seems to need to break down at least twice a day...
awesome, yes. engineering marvel, only if they can get it more reliable.
I've been following this since March. I haven't been able to find a solid answer, but I'm assuming that it is designed by Maurer Söhne. It appears to be nearly identical to a Maurer Söhne X-Car-Coaster. That would make this the third X-Car-Coaster in the world, the others are in Germany and Arkansas. The addition of the customizable sound system should make this ride fairly interesting.
Oh, forgot to mention that there really isn't anything new here. Hollywood Dream: The Ride in Japan has a nearly identical setup for the onboard soundtrack, touchscreen and all. Although it's a Mega Coaster designed by Bolliger&Mabillard, not a Maurer Söhne x-car-coaster.
Yup, Maurer Söhne designed it... I guess they originally wanted B&M but there's a supposed 5 year waiting list.
I've only been loosely following it, but I'm glad they didn't go with a B&M this time. Maurer Söhne makes pretty solid rides, and it'll help diversify their collection. ^ BTW, you happen to be a TPR member? I always wonder how many of us browse Engadget (probably quite a few since we're all nerds anyway, lol).
@Joshua_W I am or used to be a TPR member but haven't been to the site in forever. However I still try and hit up as many parks as possible every year though I haven't been to any since my last trip to Cedar Point. This thing looks cool though.
Kingda Ka shuts down that often because if the wind is above a certain speed it's unsafe to ride it. The damn thing is massive...and the whole 0-130mph in 3 secs thing is absolutely ridiculous...i've never felt anything like that before...
Not to be the negative guy but this really doesn't seem all that impressive. When I get on a roller coaster I'm wanting a thrill, music doesn't really come to mind. And 30 songs really isn't that many. It would have really made it interesting if they somehow could have altered the ride due to what song you chose. Individually moving cars or something (though probably so expensive and impractical it's impossible). Then at least it would have made a little more sense to add the music.
acid does the same thing and with an ipod at hand you have couple thousand songs to choose from instead of 30...
award for best comment of the thread.
I second this nomination.
$30,000 worth of songs ;)
I do like coasters very much, but this one seems stupid. Soundtrack: no thanks. 90 dB in my ears: yeah sounds like fun. And why would anyone wanna buy a recording of the ride. I find the whole idea lame and gimmicky. I think i prefer oldschool coasters.
Do do you have to bring your own headphones or do you get to use the provided ones that the last pig with seeping ear wax used just before you?
This is just silly. Half of the fear is hearing the metal on metal grinding away, weakening by the day...
No headphones...speakers surrounding the back of your head as part of the head rest.
The coaster is probably to loud for them to lower the volume also lets hope that the headphones don't fall off and people get there hands cutoff reaching for them.
If no head phone wont u hear the other person's music
Have you ever *been* on a roller coaster with a soundtrack? Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris was the first one, and it's synchronized with the track - meaning if the train is lighter, it goes through the musical segments more quickly. Was quite amazing in 95, with onboard flash cards holding the music back then.
Then there's obviously Rock'n'Roller coaster and Space Mountain in Anaheim, and Hollywood Dream: The Ride at the Universal Studios in Japan. That was obviously the "inspiration" for this (it's the same chain after all), but somehow Engadget only started to care once it hit the homeland a year or two later.
I love having a soundtrack - saying a soundtrack on a roller coaster is unnecessary is like saying the same about movie soundtracks. Sure, you don't NEED them - but they make the experience much more intense.
Not to crazy about the music thing..but it still seems fun, id ride itt
Just returned from Universal Studios Orlando. No doubt this will be a huge ride when finished. But ... the nice big sign in the park says Opening Spring 2009. Oops. Given there are large chunks of track missing, getting it open this summer is probably going to be a stretch.

The looks and rolls look so sweet.
We live in Orlando and visit Universal fairly often. I make sure to check out the progress of the coaster every time we're there. It looks sweet and I can't wait to try it. Whether or not the music selection thing is gimicky or not, the coaster itself looks awesome.
