Nokia's N86 8MP now shipping worldwide
Just under two months. That's how long it took Nokia's N86 8MP to go from FCC to store shelves here in America, as the cats in Espoo have just announced to the world that the aforementioned cellphone is now shipping globally. In case you've forgotten, this 8 megapixel slider touts variable aperture, a mechanical shutter and automatic motion blur reduction, not to mention 8GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot. There's no official mention of price, and as of right now, the phone's not even listed on Nokia's American e-store; still, based on early estimates, we'd say you best break out the bank just in case.

@murmermer
I guess you don't travel much. Are you from Texas??
"I'm don't mean like the iphone" ? ?
Give it up, you shoeless sisterfucking redneck fuck. Your own country mean have even disowned you
@ Jamar: Where the hell did you get a J-Spec phone with American (if that is where you are) frequencies? Inquiring minds NEED to know. I'd love a J-Spec phone.
go die bigot.
Yawn.
Don't worry, iPhone. Steve will let you will get one of these 8 megapixel cameras someday.
When all cell phones have 3D video recording, maybe.
Id rather not have 8MP on such a small sensor, the image noise would be something shocking.
Its just a cellphone, not something that needs poster sized images. This is just turning into a 'my dick is bigger than your's' battle. Give me a good quality lens over too many pixels any day!
Which do you think will come first on the iPhone, 8MP or a flash? Either way, I'd guess either is at least 3 more iPhones away...
Last year ecstatic Sharp users would be waving the same thing in your faces. And theirs is better, too.
Um, do we want this 8MP camera? Seriously - is it's image quality actually any good?
Bugger flash - give me decent higher ISO performance so I don't have to use a flash that makes everything look horrible and eats my battery life.
It's at the top of the range when it comes to cellphone cameras. If you want anything better, you basically have to get a dedicated camera.
(Possibly some Samsung beats it, 'cause they're pretty damn good at phone cameras too)
iPhone users can afford to carry an excellent smartphone plus a real-deal digital camera.
:/
Nokia N series is like Asus's Eee PC, horribly diluted.
Sorry what 8mp camera phone has the US ever created? Oh not one, your stupid fucking Sidekick's are about as popular as your automotive industry...
Except that the Sidekicks are all Japanese (made by Sharp!) with one exception. Fittingly enough, that was the one that crapped out the most.
Looks like a cheap made plastic toy ...
for months old baby ...
It actually has glass screen.
and still 320x240 ?
meh
The Engadget writers never miss an opportunity to say "Espoo," do they?
you mean "cats in Espoo"?
Ugghhh... Nokia must be an acquired taste. 1) The phone is hideous compared to latest offerings from Palm, Samsung, Apple, and HTC. 2) I'd rather use the OLD Palm OS over Symbian.
Rejoice, completely new QT based UI is coming in the future for Symbian^4. Symbian itself is the most advanced mobile operating system period. It's a fact. Current S60 UI how ever is dated and not finger optimized.
No, this phone just is hideous! :)
I've got an n95-8gb, and I love how it looks. The tiny buttons on this one doesn't appeal to me at all, too much empty surface on the front of it.
See people, Nokia-fans are still capable of criticism! ;)
Well, Nokia is an acquired taste insofar that once you taste it, you acquire one. I love the Symbian OS, specifically. Nokia, Sony, Samsung. I don't care. As long as it has Symbian. Absolute freedom, more apps than iPhone (granted, most suck), and the ability to tinker with it if you so choose.
It would take a huge development or breakthrough in another OS for me to change.
i don't want to compare, but ... this phone looks much better than iphone (which did not change a bit for 2 frickin years)
IMO it looks really nice, the more I look at it the more I like it. Simple and beautiful - it has glass screen and I have heard that it has excellent build quality too.
i love nokia but i got to admit they lack style, their phones look so bland!
So what do you love about Nokia? Just curious.
Well, once again, a "Reply to" comment has disappeared, but I'll just repeat my comment about the device.
It's an OK camera, combined with an OK phone, and it'll cost *how* much? I mean, from what I can see, it's 2 mediocre devices glommed together to create one high-priced device. Is it worth the price premium to consolidate pocket space? I guess to some people, yes.
The price should drop pretty quickly. It's got a cheaper launch price than the N85 did, and that phone's hardly expensive these days.
Everyone calling it hideous needs to sit down and really look at what passes for a good-looking phone these days. The US carriers are putting out shit with Toblerone-shaped buttons with letters on one face and numbers on the other. By most phone standards, the N86 is pretty good looking. By Nokia standards, by the standards of the N95 in particular, it's sex on legs.
Well, well, kids....this is an article about phones. Why so personal?
I'm with you. Instead of kiddsh "X device is TOTAL CRAP" (and on this thead, "X people is TRASH") can't we say, have a rational debate over say, the merits and drawbacks of the N86? Or at least a discussion of what you'd use a cameraphone for?
挪鸡鸭~
Dang - a little OT in here ...
I had an N85 for a day before I couldn't tolerate the slider wobble and sent it back to Dell in favor of the E63. Apples and oranges I realized, but dang the E63 is nice.
That said, I'd love to have an N86. OLED, great camera, the build quality (slider aside) I'm sure will be great, esp if it's like the N85. I just hope they work out the obnoxious little kinks, and then in six months + when this phone is a reasonable price I may pick it up.
I wonder how much noise is generated with all those megapixels stuffed into a tiny sensor. Are we still perpetuating this megapixel marketing nonsense in compact and phone cameras?
If I'm buying Nokia, I rather get the E71. This thing is pretty bulky. The E71 is a beauty, plus it has awesome battery life.
It seems the megapixel race has infected cellphones now. I rather have geo-tagging than a super duper blurry noisy gigapixel.
Well, the E71 doesn't have a 3.5mm jack, and it's rather wide, albeit very thin. It's also kind of old at this stage. All Nokia's GPS cameraphones geotag, either via the OS (as in the N86) or via Nokia's Location Tagger beta app.
Everyone's going on and on about megapixels, but the N86 also has a variable aperture, a mechanical shutter, and a wide-angle lens. I think Nokia should've emphasised those more as they're genuinely important new features for a cameraphone, whereas everyone knows a cameraphone's just a cameraphone in terms of sensor quality.
I wish they had added a little Xenon flash to complement those LEDs (as it was rumored), but otherwise this looks like a brilliant little phone.
Not the most stylish, sure, and more utilitarian than anything... but it's one of the few "feature phones" out right now that seems to have gotten things just right. Lens cover, 3.5mm jack, microUSB charging/data, dedicated media keys, a freakin' kickstand... it's the little things that count :)
Dumbest comments ever, congrats
Ok so I can get this or 3 iphone3gs with insane specs,.
Hmmh what to do here in America . ?
where is the white version?
