Palm Pixie (Eos) confirmed via webOS ROM leak?
This webOS ROM leak just keeps getting better and better. The PreCentral guys have reportedly found in the code some interesting tidbit in the miniboot.sh that distinctly references two different devices: "castle" (likely the codename for Pre) and "pixie," which we have previously heard as another name for the rumored AT&T-bound Eos. Is this a sign that Palm's oft-whispered Pre successor is revving up just around the corner? We can only hope.

Wasn't this also rumored to be on Verizon?
3.75GB of storage with no removable flash media slot?
I know, right!?! I've got almost 3.75 GB in music alone. Almost.
Same as $99 iPhone...
$99 iPhone 3G = 8GB
@noah
Imagine how the rest of us feel with upwards of 20GB of music....
Same as $99 iPhone 3G + 8GB + 50,000 apps = Palm's in deep doodoo.
engadget is turning into cellgadget...can you guys please make a seperate site for all this shat? not everyone wants to hear about all this carp!
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/
tada!
Not even man... It's showing the major phones because it's enGADGET. Phones were gadgets last time I checked. And if you don't want to see it, simply don't read it. Not a big deal...
Ok, either I have had too much to drink or the story and picture do not match. It clearly says "Palm Eos (Castle) in the picture, but the story says Castle is likely the codename for the Pre. Am I missing something?
I was thinking the same thing. Either the image is wrong, or the article.
Nope... They screwed up, just check the source ("Read" link). It says that the Eos is the "Castle".
Really nice phone. I want it to come to Verizon, because I need a phone and AT&T isn't exactly my first pick. :|
I've been following some of the leaked ROM stuff and from what I've seen it mentions "castle" and "pixie", neither of which are the Pre. So maybe a third webOS device? Or just different names for the same thing?
Oh, cool ... I'm so excited ... This is definitely iPhone killer material right here, folks ...
I think this one is definitely targeted more at Blackberries, the Pre is the one aimed at the iPhone and Android.
ugh
Locked or not? I'm guessing locked. bleh.
MicroSd slot at least?
doesn't seem to have wi-fi, at least according to the specs listed on the image. it'll have a hard time competing with the nokia e71x or the samsung jack on at&t, both of which are currently going for $99.
yeah, the lack of wifi is almost a deal breaker, esp considering how well webOS handles browsing. webOS is an incredible OS, but without wifi, Im not sure i would upgrade from my current centro to this when it comes out for at&t,
who am i kidding,...i am totally upgrading to this.
With such a name, they could at least get a Camera sensor from Canon !!!
is it just me or do the dimensions reported on this thing seem absurd
55mm x 111mm is the same thing as 2.17in x 4.37
which would mean that this thing is basically as wide as my razr but 1/2in taller (ignoring thickness)
that picture doesnt look like that
maybe it's just me
This has also been rumored for sprint and verizon and I wouldn't doubt sprint brings it out first since they almost always bring in the first models for palm then they go to the other cariers. Also I see this as a lower end version of webos don't think palm wants to get out a model that replaces the pre after the pre only has 4 going on 5 days of life it makes no sense at all
I want to clarify a few things:
1. Castle = Pre. The graphic is wrong, the code and the build system are right
2. The rom wasn't actually leaked. You can get the restore tool here: www.palm.com/rom
Unzip the jar and you have the OS, plus sprint add ons, plus CMDA AND UTMS firmwares. So yes it is going GSM eventually. The code is already done.
3. We rooted the Pre around 8ish Pacific time. There are carrier settings for carriers all around the world already in there, and alot of the webOS code is not Pre specific, so there are definitely lots of device/carrier combinations in the pipeline.
Let's hope the graphic is wrong about a lot of things. At $299 post rebate, this is a non-starter for all but the most rabid Palm fans or Apple/RIM haters (unless of course this is the no-commitment price). This will have to sell for $99 to be even competitive. To me, the release of the Pre and the deets we now know to be true makes this slide seem even more fake (or at least VERY preliminary) than it did when it first came out.
especially since it doesn't even have a microSD slot, which is standard on all non-Apple phones, and doesn't seem to have wifi, which is increasingly common on even lower-end WinMo/Symbian smartphones.
@Paul
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the $299 post rebate price is the retail non-contract price. So if you are getting the phone with a service contract you will most likely see a ~$200 price drop on the phone.
In my experience, Mail-in-rebate != service contract discount.
selling points: 4g
NOT!
Well, it’s amazing. The miracle has been done. Well done

Didn't any of you see this "Video capture enabled"? what that means to me is, that the webos, will be having video capture very soon, which makes pre able to record video too. Now you appleboys, don't start saying no it won't because the hardware can't, since that is not true, not even with your 3G iphones. thankyou! And no, it's not supposed to be no iphone killer, who ever said that, is a complete plug.
Video capture and voice control will come in future updates most likely. There is support in the OS for them.
Why no removable flash? WHY??????????
Linux vs *BSD, now in android, webOS vs iphone os -flavor.
I say yay to all. :)
No one in their right mind would cheer a slab candybar as a replacement for a clamshell slider. The whole point of the Pre was that it does what it does and looks how it looks in a small yet functional form factor. To suggest that it be replaced already with this candybar is just ludicrous. to suggest that it be replaced already at all is ludicrous. This is another phone; the Pre upgrade, when it comes, will be a clamshell slider in keeping with the original, I hope.
im thinking this is meant to be slotted as a lower-end device as compared to the Pre, and to appeal to customers who want a different form factor
For clues look at the Centro. I think it was a good seller for Palm. It's a great design and I hope the new WebOS phone will mimic it as much as possible. You just can't get smaller and still provide a keyboard. Whoever designed the Centro deserves a lap dance...
I can SEE this coming, i'm taking it on.
...Unles you are some of the unhappy US customers whose dialer/SMS app came bogus and is constantly crashing.
I DO have a palm centro, and it is not US version, and it have never crashed. Dialing OK, answering calls OK, (3rd p) recording calls OK, SMS OK, etc. OK. My dialer app looks different of those on Sprint&ATT.
Don't know exactly what other phones have this same problem, but not me, that's for sure.
By the way, it explains why customers say "I have a AT&T phone" or "I have an Sprint phone", but on customer service. Does not explain why it is there on AMAZON, for example. Is a Sprint centro different phisically from an unlocked phone? Why "case for Sprint centro", for example? So that's definitely not for another one. E/G an unlocked phone. lol
First of, from (hopefully) a fairly unbiased opinion and coming from an iPhone owner... I was drooling at the thought of the pre potentially stealing tons of market share from apple, not because of dislike for apple, but because the iphone has been lacking in areas every since it debuted; such as the majority of the updates it supposed to get in 3.0. I just had an epiphany ** maybe apple never included MMS capability because ATT wasn't ready?? Think about, ATT supposedly won't support iPhone MMS till late summer even though the update is coming out in on day!! WTF!? Back to the Pre, I am thrilled in some ways about the slide out keyboard, yet am looking forward to Iphone landscape keyboard, not-to-mention I find I can breeze right through typing a long message easier on a touch screen device than on an actually keyboard that you have to dig your thumb nail into the right button and push it. I always kind of figured palm would be a smaller, better version of the iPhone(s), such as the ever eluding iPhone Nano... which, I would DEFINITELY would have bought into if that would have released it this summer vs a stupid iPhone 3G upgrade. Apple has set the bar pretty high in some respects and I can see device makers exceeding that bar in different areas, but find it hard to believe one manufacturer will combine all the great features that blow the iphone out of the water. I realize the app store plays a huge role in all of this but given the right device... "build it, and they will come"... just like apple did. I am 99% percent certain that over half of iphone owners were apple fans and that is why they bought into the iphone, no, they were simply taken by remarkable device is so feature rich. I know my sentence structure is horrible, but its late and I had to vent. This post didn't necessarily have much to do with the topic except that someone before me remarked on the crappy phone in the picture... what! are we supposed to be excited about this device? I mean really, a "Blackberry Pre"? Give it up with the physical keyboard... especially exposed??? Less of a screen, more chance to press a button, less versatility, and most of all you can't change orientation. I'm tired.
