Video: CTD's MID concept fits comfortably in freakishly large pockets

Sure, this isn't the sexiest MID render we've ever seen, but it does make for a fun little video. Cambridge Technology Development, known around MIT and environs for fluidic device design, CFD analysis, and a number of other things we know less than nothing about, have designed a collapsible, pocketable PC that they call the Dragonfly. This bad boy can take the form of a flip phone, a straight-up netbook, or it can lay flat, in "table mode," ideal for pen and touch input. Of course, this isn't a real device -- and there's no telling when or if it'll become available. But when it does, how about floating us a review unit? Check 'er out yourself after the break.

I'll take one venti crappuccino.
chanmanplanet @ Jun 10th 2009 2:27PM
makes me wonder whatever happened to 'frogpad' if our single-handed keypad overlord has taken over the world of computing, cant imagine how much smaller everything would end up to be.
nukee @ Jun 10th 2009 2:32PM
So is that the little brother to the monstrous laptop that folded?

Phoenix @ Jun 10th 2009 4:25PM
that split in two rather than folding.
Quantumphysics @ Jun 10th 2009 2:33PM
All it needs is a special name that's easy to remember, rolls off the tongue, sounds slightly hip - and it could probably sell really well.
Netbooks are great for high schoolschoolers.
Leindurstit @ Jun 10th 2009 2:37PM
Saw the Starbucks cup and instinctively looked for an Apple logo (and subsequently somebody to point and laugh at.) Is that bad?
DeoWulf @ Jun 10th 2009 2:42PM
It's completely natural, don't worry.
Jorvay @ Jun 10th 2009 2:51PM
I did it too. It wasn't even out of some silly fanboyism or anything. I just assumed...
msalivar @ Jun 10th 2009 4:13PM
Hey now, some Apple users drink coffee that doesn't suck.
anodynewake @ Jun 10th 2009 7:44PM
... Coffee that doesn't suck? Tried any real coffee lately?
retro77 @ Jun 10th 2009 8:58PM
The Apple logo is hidden in the Quicktime plugin required.
msalivar @ Jun 10th 2009 10:48PM
Actually, I work in a coffee shop where we're really crazy about the quality of our beans and roast, time out shots every couple hours, etc etc. And no, I'm not an Apple user, but I see plenty in the shop, and others I frequent which have high quality.
ultimatepwnage @ Jun 10th 2009 2:46PM
why is it a quicktime movie. i dont want any apple crap on my pc, its slow and invasive as hell. flash ftw!
JimboJones @ Jun 10th 2009 3:01PM
totally agree, Apple QuickTime is one of the worse plug with most bugs .... I don't want to install it neither
Alex @ Jun 10th 2009 3:53PM
Agreed. I'm going to forego watching it altogether because it's Quicktime. But I will point out that flash is a pretty inefficient video renderer as well. My 2GHz Core 2 Duo can approach 100% CPU utilization while watching an HD video on youtube.
msalivar @ Jun 10th 2009 4:15PM
I'm past even getting pissed about it, because it's rare anything worth watching is embedded using Quicktime.
ultimatepwnage @ Jun 10th 2009 5:49PM
@Alex
And thats where hardware-accelerated flash saves the day!
J D @ Jun 10th 2009 2:47PM
throw in a flexible OLED display to get rid of screen gap and I'll consider it. I may be waiting a while for that screen...
barry99705 @ Jun 10th 2009 3:22PM
It's okay, at least that will eventually come out.
mirakutea @ Jun 10th 2009 2:47PM
nothing like a bit of turdjuice served in Styrofoam.
Galactor963 @ Jun 10th 2009 2:48PM
A neat concept, but I'm concerned it'll be eternally stuck at just that: a concept. I truly hope otherwise.
Eric @ Jun 10th 2009 2:59PM
Photoshopped Starbucks Cup, the logo is not proportioned correctly, the lid doesn't look real. It’s an imposter!
mdmadph @ Jun 10th 2009 3:00PM
Ah -- wonder why that flash video was taking forever to load.
Then I saw that it wasn't flash, it was quicktime. Thanks.
superhobo @ Jun 10th 2009 3:17PM
Screw Quicktime
MarkShark @ Jun 10th 2009 3:35PM
Freakishly large pockets? I've fit books bigger than that in my pockets.
Magallanes @ Jun 10th 2009 3:53PM
Hey!, its looks like a 80's game watch.
FCat @ Jun 10th 2009 3:57PM
MID? No. I'm just happy to see you.
sajonfalcon @ Jun 10th 2009 4:47PM
I get the way the screen flips open, but if they are not independent of each other, I think there is a good chance for kinkage and breakage.
al @ Jun 10th 2009 7:01PM
looks about the size of my archos and that fits in a pocket just fine
hated @ Jun 10th 2009 7:09PM
My iPhone3gs has better specs than this,.LOL
mike @ Jun 10th 2009 8:55PM
UGLY.
The iPod touch mops the floor with this.
Why does this even exist!...??
Thank you ... PC Makers for all this.... innovation.. and choice.....
*vomit
Al @ Jun 10th 2009 10:56PM
I can't see jack s**t from normal typing distance on that little screen.
Alan @ Jun 11th 2009 7:20PM
This is would definately sell millions and I for one would buy two of them! There are millions whom just want a touch type keyboard pocket laptop and so far there has not been one made yet. This is a great design if it becomes reality.
Garst @ Jun 12th 2009 2:31AM
Quicktime? There's not a chance in Hell that I'm installing another add-on to watch that video!
