WebOS homebrewers say 'Hello World!' to Palm Pre
It's begun. Although lacking a general release of the SDK, the first homebrew apps have emerged thanks to last night's leaked WebOS root image. The first application puts a stake in the ground by displaying a simple "hello world" on the screen. Unfortunately, the code overwrote the pre-installed Sprint Nascar application... oh wait, that's probably a good thing. Devs have also started tampering with existing code to disable the shutter sound on the camera while leaving the rest of the sounds enabled. Now why would somebody want to do that?
Update: New image from an excited developer that shows scm6079's work over at PreCentral evolving with a 5-second photo timer and more. We're being told that several members of the Pre hacking team consist of old-school PalmOS hackers from the Samsung i300 days. Now if Palm can just lure back the rest of its developers smitten by Android and the lure of App Store riches then they might just make something of this fledgling smartphone platform.
[Thanks, Scott M. and C.J.]

It starts.
N64 emulation ooooh yea!
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Why would anyone want to disable the shutter sound on a cameraphone, really, you ask this like a serious question? Really?
Maybe because it's horribly annoying, the sound is totally fake, no actual camera makes those kind of sounds, it also makes it almost impossible to use it in places where no flash photography is allowed, for example if your friend is making a silly pose in a museum or gallery.
Not only that the camera shutter sound should have the option to be disabled at will, it should also automatically be muted if the phone is on Silent mode.
No, what I actually meant was to take pictures of little girls on the playground, and not be noticed how I'm a huge pervert.
It's not like PnS cameras with 10 or 12 megapixels exist, that take better pictures than any phone (well, I'm excluding SE Satio here) and are smaller than most smartphones, right?
Dude, you didn't get the sarcasm. It was a bit concealed though.
Everyone wants the shutter sound to go away....
No, not everyone. The opposite really

About 10 years ago I lived in Pete King's district on Long Island in New York. I think he has truly crossed over to the dark side with this one.
I for one will welcome our eventual Libertarian overlords. www.lp.org
I need to get mine already
At this point now with the entire code being leaked out, what is the difference between Android and webOS in terms of openness? (besides one is deliberately open)....
I would think that there is a big difference between having the binary root image and having the source code to the platform.
@George:
I think that the uncompiled source code to WebOS is actually in this package. This is not just the binary, it is uncompiled.
The big difference is that future versions of the Palm WebOS source code will likey NOT be revealed. Whereas future versions of andriod will.
Launch Camera Application... dick.
Turn and leave on flash... dick.
Turn on vibration motor... dick.
I though I was the only one who saw dick everywhere. Phew..
You can already disable the shutter sound without any software. When you want to silence the shutter sound just hit the ringer silence switch and that will kill the sound, just remember to turn it back on. The switch is located next to the power switch.
Am I the only one who read that as dick dick?
I was just thinking the same thing, ha!! Maybe palm is trying to tell their users something??...
Launch Camera Application Dick
Turn and leave on flash dick
Turn on vibration motor dick
That's all I see, just sayin'...
For some reason I was under the impression WebOS would be open-source. I must be really slow.
Yay! Someone make SSL use with Outlook exchange work
WebOS Jailbreak?
i was pretty sure my maturity level plummeted when i started laughing at the picture thinking it said "dick" but then i read all of the comments and realized i'm just like the rest of the internet population. it kind of saddens me
Too bad they can't change the radio in software. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait for the G1 v2.
I went to look at this phone over the weekend and decided NOT to buy for a couple of reasons.
1. The biggest thing I did not like was the factt hat the phone no longer sync's with my PC. That may not sound like much, but having been a Palm user for many years I am used to having the ability to add/delete/edit contacts on either my phone OR PC and have the phone and PC figure out the latest info. It is awesome! From what I understand reading the Pre manual you can only transfer files from the phone to the PC. There is no mention of being able to edit and transfer back to the phone. Then how to you remember which file is the latest, in the PC or the Pre? Remember when the phone was the extension of the PC, now they have made the PC an extension of the phone and I don't like it.
2. Anyone who has owned palm products knows that you occasionally have to erase everything and resync it to your PC to get all the info back. The good thing is now Palm will hold all of your contacts online so you do not need it on your PC. The bad thing is that Palm has all of your information online.......remember TJ Maxx and how many other data thefts and hacking stories to steal peoples data.
3.. Lack of applications. You would have thought that they would have given the SDK to everyone earlier so there would be more than 5 applications available.
4. No old carryover of programs from Palm OS. No resident Documents to go.
In closing, I really liked the phone and how it worked except for the above things. I also did not buy it for the above reasons. I really am a fan of palm and hotsync, but I must admit that I will keep my 700P and possibly jump ship to the iphone if the above items are not resolved.
Does anyone else have these concerns/complaints?
1. Chapura is already working on a desktop/Outlook sync application (http://www.precentral.net/chapura-pocketmirror-bring-outlook-sync-pre). mark/space is also working on The Missing Sync for the Palm Pre (http://markspace.com/).
2. Since Synergy syncs with Google and Facebook, your data is already in the hands of other companies. The iPhone and Windows Mobile devices also run the same risks with their online backup methods (MobileMe and My Phone).
3. The applications will come.
4. You can run most of the old Palm OS apps using an emulator. Plus, Documents to Go is in the works, I believe.
For WindowsMobile at least backing up to an online repository is far from your only option.
I don't see why it isn't more popular to encrypt this data then back up online. As long as you remember the key you used you can restore the backup.
"Unfortunately, the code overwrote the pre-installed Sprint Nascar application... oh wait, that's probably a good thing."
What's wrong with Nascar?
it takes up valuable disk space on the pre
well... it's probably because most Pre users are technical geeks who really don't have any friends except for their one true love who is undoubtedly named: "BigBoobies69@aol.com". Therefore, geeks don't like Nascar..
I'm just kidding guys...
Not a lot of nascar fans I'm assuming. I have yet to click on that app yet cause I really don't care for it.
I thoguht I was the only one to see that
dick

The shutter click on Pre can be disabled by...
...flipping the switch on the top to "silent" mode.
TA-DA!
Buy a Pre.
Do you even own a pre?
Oops I apologize for that last comment, I thought you meant a software switch, not the actual physical switch. My bad! ^_^
I'm surprised at how many people actually have the pre already. i'm still on the waiting list. grr
turn on vibration motor [click ] = cheap vibrator alternative and girls bestfriend?
Combine that with a silent time delay camera mode.
I think the shutter sound to to try to keep pervs from taking pictures at the gym.
19 Apps! Take that Apple! :P
Yup, 19 more than Apple had on release.
Not to be a buzzkill or anything, but there's one thing about this that's not so great: If you can root your Pre, so can someone else that picks it up, which means that if you lose yours, by the time you realize you lost yours, it could be stolen, rooted, and all your information be in someone else's hands -- without the ability to remote wipe it that was designed into it.
sweet deal
Give it 6 months, the Palm will have an equal amount of slick apps as the iPhone; with nicer hardware and a big app catalogue, this phone will be unstoppable.
