Nikon D300S screen leaks out
It's been removed now, but Nikon Rumors says this screenshot from a supposed Nikon D300S was briefly posted on Nikon USA's site earlier today. There's not much to go on here, but that SD icon in the corner seemingly implies the update to the D300 will somehow feature an SD slot -- whether it's in addition to CF as previously rumored is obviously up in the air. Either way, it seems like we'll find out soon enough -- stay tuned.

Nice
omfg, I can't waaaaaaaaaait
Kind of sucks. I was looking forward to upgrading to a D400. Guess I'll hold off a bit longer. Not into these supplemental revisions of products.
This agrees with a previously reported Nikon rumor that the D300s will be out shortly and feature dual card slots (CF/SD), quiet shutter mode, 720p@24fps video, and not much else.
Hopefully this isn't replacing the rumored D400 this year, because if so, weaksauce Nikon...
I thought the D300 did 720 already? Or maybe thats just live view. I guess I could look it up, but that would require effort. Anyways, yea its probably getting the SD b/c of the MBP. I'm probably still leaning towards the D90 anyways.
Looks like it can capture a good EV range...decent sky and shadow exposure in mid-afternoon light.
erm...you know that images used in marketing are usually composites or at the very least heavily retouched, right? especially an image like this. and at any rate, how could you possibly tell from looking at this image anything about the dynamic range of the camera? i'm sure its good, but you certainly can't tell here.
Why does it have a 6.8MP resolution on there? Do you think that maybe the D300S will have a 6.8MP feature that shoots at a higher frame rate?
That M next to the resolution stands for medium.
That's the resolution of the saved JPEG not that of the sensor.
Well, well, what do you know. I guess no D400 anytime soon then.
We shouldn't be too surprised if a number of camera manufacturers hurry the transition from CF to SD, especially after Apple's inclusion of the SD slot in the new MacBook Pro.
Yes, I know that not everyone uses a MBP, but that's a significant boost to SD.
Umm, no, it's not. How many people own a MBP? It's a VERY small market percentage. Other laptops have had SD slots for eons.
Listen, I love Mac products (own a Mac Pro and use it frequently for audio production), but putting SD cards in these notebooks isn't changing a thing. How much does a card-reader cost? Almost nothing. Just building the dumb thing in isn't going to have a meaningful impact on the way that major camera manufacturers like Nikon and Canon choose to outfit their gear.
Id be super surprised if the d300 update had a solo sd slot. Pro cameras use CF, period, so the SD slot will probably be in addition to a CF here.
I agree, and I think this makes sense for all manufacturers.
Dual slots could be nice, though. Dual CF would be better, but space would probably be a constraint. But imagine shooting and running out of space. Instead of having to stop and swap your card, and maybe risk your subject changing, you can keep going, overflowing to the SD. Or say you're swapping your card, and the perfect shot presents itself, but will be gone quickly. Hey, you still have the SD in!
Dual SD/CF doesn't really make sense to me. Much rather have dual CF. There's plenty of room in the camera for this; the Dx00 market isn't like mp3 players and tiny P&S cameras which are strapped for space.
The Nikon D3 & D3x have dual-CF slots, they work great since if you fill it up the overflow will automatically be saved on the second slot. This particularly important for sports photography where you take thousands of shots in a sporting event and have a huge 500mm prime lens on your body that makes stopping and changing media very cumbersome.
The problem with these CF+SD slots is that many times they don't have an overflow feature where pictures are offloaded to the second slot. Also, dual CF works well because you are using the same media and you don't have to fumble around.
But its better then nothing, I'm sure there are a lot of people that want to use SD media with the D300s so Nikon really can't be faulted for putting it in.
Tight
Is that Blood Gulch?
Sick, more features real photographers don't need.
Hopefully this will drive the price of the D300 down so I can grab a used one.
D300S, "S" for speed ? LAME!! LOL
they want you to call it the D300 S not the D300S
remember the space!!
instead of doing incremental upgrades of features that serve for marketing hype more than for everyday usage, maybe they should focus on releasing firmware updates that let my hard earned D90 autofocus.
I swear nikon, I wanna record my cats in HD, but in all cases i find myself using my G9 instead. ...
:(
It's not going to happen, firmware isn't the issue. Current hardware in DSLRs just isn't made to contrast-detect focus through live view like P&S cameras.
When I came home for lunch, some of my channels were jumbled. 13-1 was displaying 49-2, etc. I did a new channel scan and it fixed everything.
I'll wait for a sub $1500 body with an FX ( full frame) sensor. Not really interested in video but I'd like to be able to use the "good" Nikon glass without the crop factor......
BTW, not to start a flamewar here but I was at Legoland (San Diego) today and most of the DSLRs I saw were Nikons (D60s to D300s), There was eve a Grandma alternating shooting her three granddaughters (with their parents) with a D300 and a Canon 3CCD prosumer camcorder. Annoying! Not only that the brood was noisy as hell and held up the line but the fact that the grandma was treating her gear like a point and shoot! I wanted to shove my D50 in her hands and say "here, use this. It has scene modes. Let me make proper use of that camera!"
It used to be vogue for products to be named "i" something. Now the wannabes are all going to add an S to their model numbers.
Nikon's been adding 's' to the end of the cameras for YEEEAAARS. As in 1989. There are only so many numbers ending in 00.
And I dearly hope you weren't trying to imply that the iPhone 3Gs is introducing (or solidifying) some new fad.
