Alienware M17x unboxed... by Mr. Bicep
We noted that Alienware's "All Powerful" M17x gaming laptop was a hefty beast when we got our hands on it last month, so who better to unbox this 11.5-pound monster than Bruce Pechman, also known as Mr. Bicep? Apparently Bruce scored one of the first models off the line after betting the Alienware reps at E3 that he could do 17 straight one-arm lifts of the demo machine over his head, and his maxed-out rig packs a quad-core Core 2 Extreme, dual GeForce 260M graphics cards and a slot-loading Blu-ray burner -- all of which arrived in this gigantic 32-pound box. Yeah, it's a little ridiculous -- but you know you want it.

Would you want it if it was 7 lbs?
My XPS M1710 is just shy of 12lbs. It can go anywhere my 9400 Insperon (at half the weight) goes.
I just don't understand your comment, or others just like yours for that matter. Is it the size, or the weight that kills off it's portability for you?
I haven't run into issue with it's size when bringing it anywhere. Although it did come with a backpack made for it, making taking out and about easy. It fits in my messenger bag too. Weight has never been a problem... 12lbs, only form my front door, to my car. From my car to friends house/work/airport etc etc.
I think a lot of the comments like yours come from people that are just plain ignorant of how powerful these DRT's are, and how useful the portability of that power can be.
Remember kiddos, this is not a Hello Kitty, weak breasted, Nancy boy netbook here.
You can build a briefcase computer if you're that big into LAN parties. It'll probably weigh and cost less.
@Agent
I think I asked a valid question
I never sounded rude or condescending, and you did by calling me and the "people" ignorant and "kiddos"
Maybe I should have given you a whole story about how I use my computer, that I did used to play games, but I don't anymore, and since I don't do CAD or A/V editing, I have no use for laptop that powerful, big, and heavy.
@ EB
Ok, sure, but at least I answered your question. You've replied with terrible grammar and mis-quotes. Also, on top of that, you haven't even answered my simple question.
Now who's being rude? tsk tsk
You seriously want perfect grammar on some comment section for a blog?
I could write an essay on this thing in perfect MLA or APA format if you want, since I have a major in English Literature.
Oh, and no, I wouldn't buy a 7 lbs. laptop. I probably wouldn't even buy a 5 lbs. laptop.
As I wrote in the last comment, I have no use for a powerful laptop nor desktop.
Okay, everything else aside here. If it was one pound, would you consider it portable then? I know, you have no need for something like this, I get that, but you asked a question, for which seemingly you didn't want an answer to.
I just don't see how the weight plays into portability. Unless 10+ lbs is taxing for you. This is what I find to be confusing about what you wrote. I would argue that the size of these behemoths would cause more to have issue with portability, not the weight.
I do think weight has something to do with portability, because it would cause somewhat of a discomfort when it's over a certain weight. You're right though, it's the size that would cause issues with it being portable or not more than the weight.
Irony is soooo delicious.

More like "Hi, I am an idiot and have absolutely no grasp on English grammar at all. I have never used punctuations and have never written a sentence composed of more than 5 words."

And this evening -

"You seriously want perfect grammar on some comment section for a blog?"
Very good. You win, I lose, blah blah.
As for my excuse, I was confirming my plane schedule with a friend in Korea, in Korean of course.
It's hard to convert between the two languages, although lack of punctuations in the second comment was purely my fault.
@ EB: Your comments on this post are kind of pointless, its like me going into a post on the new ASUS Eee netbook and saying WHY CANT THIS PLAY CRYSIS!?
Different machines for different markets. There are people out there with different priorities than you, and if you spent less time pointlessly arguing in your own threads you'd see that there is at least some demand for products like this.
Go to the gym and sympathize with someone there about how you can't carry your 11.5lb laptop.
I can't keep living this charade. I was actually overwhelmed by the sight of that mans silky smooth and lumpy arms that I tried to make like I was a tough guy. Oh, the thought of that muscular man slowly sliding his POCKET knife into that box....mmmmm.....
I actually think you're serious....
No, you wish I was serious.
Wow, you're cool.
I actually think you're serious......
Dual 280M. You can't get 260M in SLI.
Incorrect.
GTX 280M SLI = $600 option
GTX 260M SLI = $300 option
GTX 260M = Included
FAIL - dead link
In for video of one-arm lifts.
Argh! Our server ain't bad by any means, but this is just RIDICULOUS.
It's working everyone, it's just REALLY slow. It ought to get better as the night goes on and traffic begins to die somewhat. :)
The Engadget effect I suppose... thanks for the support everyone, and sorry for our server's apparent inadequacy!

Wow. I didn't even clickthrough until I read your comment. You guys are getting slaughtered.

Now I know who this laptop is made for! Bodybuilders. Others wouldn't want to carry it around.
You don't need to be a bodybuilder to lift an 11.5lb laptop over your head with one arm.
...You do need a fat wallet though.
We're trying a couple of things to get the server back up and running at a better speed... most notably, some PHP to HTML caching stuff. Hopefully we can get things going again very soon so you all can see the article.
I also hope to provide benchmarks soon from Mr. Bicep to answer some of the preliminary questions people probably have about the laptop's performance.
Stay tuned, we're trying, I swear... =D
Steve
That couch looks like it was made from the tanned skin of some kind of bizarre killer. "Hey, wasn't she a great big fat person?"
All right guys, I think we made it work!
More info soon to come, as soon as Bicep returns from his daily exercise routine of 10,000 bench press reps, all done with beautiful busty women instead of weights, of course.
Steve
megan fox has a fucked up thumb. completely ruined it for me. bleh. I won't be able to sleep tonight because my life is ruined.
nahhhh these are the crysis 2 specs

ok that didnt replay in the right part of the comment threat, ignore that
Wow, nice laptop~
Although too hefty for a box at 32 pounds. Did they include a live dancing monkey on the package?
And I thought SLI and Core 2 Extemes on laptops are impossible, but there goes me. All hail Alienware.
I wish this laptop would arrive nicely on the Philippine market. But hey, who in the right mind would buy it here anyway.
I'm an Apple fanboy and hate Windows and I STILL want that thing, a lot. Serious hardware, period.
>> Did they include a live dancing monkey on the package?
Actually, the live monkey was nixed from the final retail due to a downturn in the market and thus increasing downward pressure on notebook prices.
First official confirmation here, but sorry to disappoint.
mmm... velour. soft as a velvet child.
i supposed he's not going to use a blade to open that box?
>> i supposed he's not going to use a blade to open that box?
Bicep doesn't need a blade. The mere presence of his muscles rips through packaging infallibly and effortlessly.
This man is the Chuck Norris of technology.
Steve
really? so is not Bill Gates on steroid?
There was a foam packing brace around the box containing a foam packing brace around the laptop. Who packs a box to protect a box that is protecting a product. I am all for proper product protect, but that was pointless.
I wonder if it comes with a warning label that says: "Setting this machine on your lap for prolonged periods of MAY result in lost of limbs and probably the ability to reproduce."
