You'd think that Nokia would want to do a better job of building up such important product announcements with a long, drawn-out series of frustratingly unhelpful teasers, viral videos, and global PR campaigns, but instead, it turns out that the rumored
E72 and
5530 XpressMusic have been officially unveiled at the company's Connection 09 event in Singapore. The E72 is arguably the bigger announcement of the two, succeeding the E71 by adding a whopping 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack (thank goodness), integrated compass, 10.2Mbps HSDPA, and an optical navigation pad; it'll hit in the third quarter for €350 (about $489). Follow the break for video of the E72 in slick, polished, high-orchestrated marketing action. Next up, as we'd heard, the 5530 ends up being a small step down from the
5800 in the S60 5th Edition totem pole, offering just EDGE data without any form of 3G (though you've still got WiFi). It's got a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, 3.5mm jack, and a 640 x 360 touchscreen display. Like the E72 it'll be available in the third quarter; it'll retail for €199 (about $278) unlocked.
[Thanks, nabs]

Nice price on the 5530. Nokia always been nice with cost.
Kelvinyam @ Jun 14th 2009 11:28PM
Too bad it's only marginally cheaper than 5800.
Zane @ Jun 15th 2009 1:14AM
Resale values for the 5800XM are already quite low. This will only drive it down further.
chase @ Jun 14th 2009 11:28PM
Am i the only person that finds it slightly interesting that although the Nokia 5530 is a step down from the Nokia 5800, it looks WAY better than the 5800
darkmax @ Jun 14th 2009 11:54PM
i thought so too.
kwikit (aka tikiwk) @ Jun 15th 2009 12:37AM
Me too. Ironic / Tragic isn't it.
Imran @ Jun 15th 2009 3:41AM
I'm just hoping we 5800 owners get some kind of firmware update that allows us to have the same homescreen as the 5530!
Mark Anderson @ Jun 15th 2009 6:09AM
It's called "having more than one model in your line up".
That way people can pick the one they want, with the features they want at the price they want. Crazy, I know!
kwikit (aka tikiwk) @ Jun 15th 2009 7:08AM
Mark, the problem is that Nokia has something I can complain about on every phone they've released for the past 2 years so I don't order 1. The criticism here is completely valid. They have a more powerful phone with mediocre looks (5800), and a less powerful phone with better looks (5300). You want to have "more than 1 model in your line up" that each appeal to users, not each with different issues driving away potential customers. I am not required to make a concession with their phones because there are other manufacturers.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 16th 2009 5:30PM
That's nice. The 5800 sells a million units a month though.
So what was your point again?
Kevin @ Jun 14th 2009 11:27PM
S60 is such a laggard... I mean yeah the hardware's beautiful, but can we stick android on it? Or even freaking winmo?! Okay nah... not winmo ;-)
john @ Jun 14th 2009 11:30PM
Fuck android!
va jj @ Jun 14th 2009 11:52PM
yes i really wanted to screw around with android #18
Fernando @ Jun 14th 2009 11:59PM
Music phones require a2dp ;)
vitriolix @ Jun 15th 2009 12:43AM
"Music phones require a2dp ;)"
Your point? You realize android supports A2DP now right?
Mark Anderson @ Jun 15th 2009 3:54AM
Yup, fuck Android.
Until it's got the same usage and dependability as S60 that is anyway.
Suomaa @ Jun 15th 2009 4:09AM
Who want's limited operating system? Not me. Symbian all the way (they could do overhaul for UI, it's coming anyway).
john @ Jun 14th 2009 11:29PM
i'm digging the new optical D pad
cayton @ Jun 15th 2009 7:58AM
Yeah, I bought an E71 last week, so I thought I'd be disappointed by this news. But really, I like my phone so much, I can wait a few years to upgrade.
jay jay @ Jun 14th 2009 11:30PM
10.2Mbps HSDPA!!! at&t can't even roll out 7.2 hspda. these phones have nice specs but im just not a fan of the symbian OS so i'll have to pass.
Absolute92 @ Jun 14th 2009 11:30PM
I wonder how the screen looks.
Fernando @ Jun 14th 2009 11:31PM
Nokia screwed up again, even though the E-61 was a slug, they should of put a 2.8 inch screen on the E72.
jdd @ Jun 14th 2009 11:36PM
A 5MP camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack in the E72, thus invalidating my reasons for not wanting to trade in my N95 8GB for an E71. Now I just need to find the moneys..
Be Fearless @ Jun 14th 2009 11:36PM
hope that 5530 xpressmusic hits tmobile in the future :)
cmon nokia throw a symbian dog an xpressmusic bone!

atheos @ Jun 14th 2009 11:44PM
Solar power? The sun shines like 20% of the year here in Finland (not counting nights), they would fail miserably in their home land :D
Meanwhile Apple will introduce a charging method that uses Steve Jobs' sheer awesomeness to power every iPhone in the world.
atheos @ Jun 14th 2009 11:46PM
THANK YOU 1Password for completing the comment field too :S
What I was trying to say: The S60 nowadays is like having Windows Me on a high end gaming PC.
ALBGunner04 @ Jun 14th 2009 11:53PM
Meaning every iPhone would be out of power?
darkmax @ Jun 14th 2009 11:57PM
that was what i thought! lol
Fernando @ Jun 15th 2009 12:01AM
Dissing S60 while getting owned by an OS X plugin, oh the irony :P

I guess Ziegler missed out on the Pass the Parcel video series.
Chris Ziegler @ Jun 15th 2009 12:06AM
Nope, didn't miss, but that was just the 5530, correct? I feel like the E72 is the big news here.
digitallysick @ Jun 15th 2009 12:24AM
Humm 5300 xpressmusic cost as much as the 5800 but looks better and has no 3G. Sigh, Wish it had 3g
ichheissesuperfantastisch @ Jun 15th 2009 1:01AM
the 5530 is exactly what i needed: a nicer-looking version of the 5800, at a lower price point, with wi-fi. I'll definitely be picking up, as I've been looking for a proper, consumer-oriented music phone. i have no need for 3G, as the plans in the US are too expensive for my taste. Plus, i'm a student, so i pretty much have wi-fi access wherever i go.
Billdozer @ Jun 15th 2009 1:29AM
Am I the only one that can't get my head around the whole bezel within a bezel they have going on with the 5530?
Nelagster @ Jun 15th 2009 1:53AM
am i the only one that thought the music sounded like the opening to a country song?!? wow i was gettin scared there for a second...
Imran @ Jun 15th 2009 3:45AM
Damn, if the 5530 had 3g, it'd replace my 5800! Sexy looking thing. The E72 is niiice, finally a good camera and 3.5mm jack an e series, tempting, verrry tempting... Overall, a nice couple of releases!
alcom4x @ Jun 15th 2009 4:12AM
the E72 looks great. that could be awesome working next to my i8910HD I just bought. the 5530 looks really good too! but I'm guessing it has a crappy resistive screen too? 5800 might have an " ok " touchscreen and the N97 sure does has better response, but they're nowhere as close as the capacitative on my omniaHD ( not to mention the omniaHD can still do proper handwriting!!)
Specs of the E72 are way past their time now, I mean symbian v3 REALLY needs a resolution bump.320x240 is crap by today's standards. and I'm guessing it'll still have some kind of arm11 running it..
Nokia, wake me up when you have a cortexA8 8mp capacitative n97 kplzthx!
Suomaa @ Jun 15th 2009 10:10AM
It quite funny thing actually, my Nokia N80 has nice 416x352 resolution screen which is incredible resolution for such a small screen* but then for some reason Nokia ditched that resolution.
*For example Palm Pre has only 480×320 resolution screen.
G @ Jun 15th 2009 4:15AM
Not including 3G seems like a really stupid decision, it's certainly a reason for me not to buy it if i was in the market for such a phone.
I think it's probably going to the USA because from what i have heard your 3G isn't that much better than EDGE anyway
zephxiii @ Jun 15th 2009 10:37AM
our 3g IS much better than edge, hugely.
Arthur @ Jun 15th 2009 8:28AM
As a E71 owner, I didn't feel like getting the new E72 when it came out. And just saw the youtube vid, and man, that thing will be mine when it's out period. I agree with the solid aspect of the phone. I can't believe how solid my E71 is in spite of its great design. Thanks Nokia :). Now could you make it easier to use the Ovi Store in Paris, that would be great :D
bushako @ Jun 15th 2009 4:53PM
ahm..is it just me or do i spot a similar chrome bezel to the iphone?!
zephxiii @ Jun 15th 2009 10:35AM
The e72 is going to give me the key things i wanted on my e71. I can't wait to get it.
dkarageo @ Jun 15th 2009 12:55PM
Hunh. The 5530 is a really nice looking phone; why couldn't the higher end 5800 look like that? And that home screen looks nice too. I might just get the 5530 as a second phone and swap out the sim card with my flip Nokia 6650, which ironically DOES have 3G.
B_Lizzard @ Jun 15th 2009 3:41PM
And, according to the Nokia Europe website, GSM talk time is quoted to be 12 h 30 min, standby time 492 h and music playback time is 37.5 h (!). These are probably optimistic figures, but Nokia isn't known for exaggarating (too much) when it comes to battery life.
I really don't know why people are complaining? The changes seem to be for the better, and the addition of the trackpad thingie actually looks very practical. And since when is QVGA not enough for anyone anymore? I really don't think consumer needs have changed *that* much the past 4 years. Maybe people are getting a little bit wanting at this point.
These are enterprize-level products, more or less, not featurephones, and are made to be practical and reliable.
I still can't believe people are whining about the lack of "wireless usb and bluetooth 3.0". Hey, maybe if you throw it in the sink it'll clean all your dishes too!
B_Lizzard @ Jun 15th 2009 3:59PM
The above is obviously about the E72. And here's the product page on Nokia Europe:
http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-e72
The price is also a sweet spot, both on the E72 and the 5530. I wish the 5530 had a higher capacity battery, though. ~ 5 h of GSM talk time isn't all that much, though 27 h of music is OK, and I bet they crammed a good hardware codec in there so it can at least compare to a good dedicated mp3 player, sound quality wise.
