Kingston rolls out 128GB DataTraveler 200 USB flash drive

Feeling a little wistful for the old days when USB flash drives costs hundreds of dollars apiece? Then you may want to pick up Kingston's new 128GB DataTraveler 200, which is apparently not only largest drive of its type to date but, at $546, one of the most expensive as well. In addition to that added storage space, that hefty price will also buy you a fairly rugged drive with a capless design, plus some built-in password protection and the usual Windows ReadyBoost capabilities. Of course, if you don't need that extra space, you can simply pick up Kingston's 32GB or 64GB drives, which run a slightly more reasonable $120 and $213, respectively.

add a little more and you can get a 256gb ssd!
Speed?
Na faster than USB2 can deliver obviously, thus not worth the money.
480Mbps
JUST A WILD GUESS!
or you can buy western Digital small 2.5 Passport external harddrive 500GB and faster than those USB memory for 99$
i supposed these drives crash less than hdd but stick one of them into a faulty usb and you got yourself a $500+ paperweight.
Still this is far pocket-friendlier
I can not tell you how many times i had failed USB flash memory... i insert the memory and i get a message "You need to format that hard drive"..... i have WD passport for more than 2 years and never failed on me, plus who cares if a HD fail? they are super cheap that's why you need a "backup"
@va jj
Very few USB drives go over half of that, same with hard drives. Speed is pretty important, as it can range anywhere from 10MBps (or less...yuck) to 35-40MBps Most seem to sit around the 15-20MBps range.
(Keep in ming the pesky bit/Byte thing...480Mbps=60MBps)
It's the USB ports that have the issue, there's a lot of overhead on USB and most mobo's just can't do 480mps no matter how capable the device plugged in is.
For $500, you can get a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD for your computer and a 32GB USB stick!
Okay, manufactures need to realize that when they make a USB key flash drive, make it so the plastic side with the USB connector is as slim as possible as not all computers/devices have enough room for oversized shape like this. They need to realize that most USB ports are placed very close to each other.
Yes.. Like the MacBook Pros.. Right? Am I Right? -.-
@ holy_moly
No troll. Like pretty much every USB able computer, unless it has one USB port. In case you haven't used a computer in the last 10 years, even on a BYO box the clever mainboard manufacturers stack the USB ports on top of esch other or within 5mm to the side.
And if u were really a clever troll it would be better to mention the macbook air or an apple keyboard since neither have the vertical space to handle the chunk of this device.
Agreed!
The dt200 design is slik and sexy,
BUT
the drive get fat instantly after the USB connector. Sure it'll work on some of PCs,
but my Campus PC wont even let me plug something that big, because of the bulky size right after the connector. it needs to be slim.
and my notebook might also be not a godo plaace for it, caz it'll definitely cover the usbport right next to it and render it unusable when its plugged in.
(this * X )+ USB Hub
Hmm.. or you can go for one of these little goomba dummies:

32GB at $120? Sure, new tech is cool and can be more expensive, but this is def. a scenario where I'd take two $20 16GB USB sticks over 1 32GB at $120.

Kingston = RIPOFF!
i look fwd to finding one left on a table in starbucks
Hehehe
This is quite pointless/overpriced
For 500 dollars more i could actually bye a mac with that
For 6500 more i could buy a decent used compact car!
Or a PC for less than that.
or a full size japanese car with bulletproof reliability :p.
That's a lotta porn
Maybe when USB 3.0 rolls around with hardware support, such huge flash drives will be worth buying, but right now I'll keep my money in my wallet where it belongs.
WTF... why is 2x 64GB cheaper than a 128GB...
Because it is the first to this capacity. They think that by itself should warrant its obscene price.
Because it took more than twice as much effort to shove twice as much componentry into a device 1/2 the size to the one you're comparing it to.
Material cost may be less, but the technology required to get there is more expensive.
It's like that for just about any flash or hard drive at the biggest capacity. Two 1 TB
I'm curious as to how long it would take to fill up one of the babies... I'm guessing 'bout 8 hours.
Why would they ruggedize the body but not protect the actual connector with a cap?
Because the connector retracts into the body :)
Because it slides... or did you see that in the image already? I suspect it is no where near rugged, it just has a rubber outer sleeve.
Buy a bunch of these and RAID them for maximum speed!
Suddenly my 2 gigger is not so cool anymore. At one time it had massive storage. :-(
Yea me too. Corsair doesn't even make my flash drive anymore.
I remember paying £40 for 64mb :/
I know Toxic! I remember paying $180(US) for 128MB!,..now they have 128GB?! Crazy!
I remember when my 2GB Sony was the shit haha. And it was like 100 bucks.
Oh....
I remember when I bought my first memory upgrade, not that this is ram exactly, but would be faster than what I got.
1.5MB ex demo from the shop. Cost me a sweet $1500
That was is 1988 if I recall. Man I was the coolest at the hacker meets.
Heh, a friend just tossed me an older 4GB and said "Here, this is too small".
Works for me.
ok mebbe im just not so good at math but. 64 X 2 = 128 and 213 x 2 = 426. so can someone please explain the correlation here. So at $546 im not understanding how a drive twice the size of another somehow cost close to 3 times as much???
I'm guessing the raw materials/manufacturing costs involved do not merit the price tag, expect massive price drops in the future.
I expect 256gb,512gb etc in the future using the same amount of raw materials and space (new lithog techniques).
Because it took more than twice as much effort to shove twice as much componentry into a device 1/2 the size to the one you're comparing it to.
Material cost may be less, but the technology required to get there is more expensive.
Wasn't too long ago that 128MB was huge for a flash drive.
I still have an old 128MB flash drive I store all my NES ROMs on, along with an emulator. Keeps it off my work system but lets me indulge when I feel like it.
Yes, it's amazing how fast they grew.
I used to upgrade and waited for a new size to be released constantly but after around 8-16GBs I don't really have that need anymore, 8 gigs ought to be enough for anyone.
dude 128 mb was around 5 years ago
@someone: for us old people, 5 years isn't that long ago.
you'll see.... ;)

It is rumored that Bill Gates once said "640K is more memory than anyone will ever need." Feel free to place your foot in your mouth.
why can i get a 64gb jump drive but not a 64gb ipod? hmmm
128GB ReadyBoost....
Totally necessary.
haha :)
This would be great... on USB 3.0
Wake me up when I my fat a@$ can go to my local WalFart and get these for same price as my potato chips (almost the same price)!
Can ReadyBoost even take advantage of 128GB?
Or you can pick up a Microcenter USB 32GB for under $60.00! http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0292241
STICK THIS IN AN IPOD CLASSIC NOW!
The whole point of it using a hard drive is because of the high price of flash.
Let's say 128GB of flash memory costs $450. Add the price of everything else (headphone jack, scroll wheel, screen, body, logic boards, headphones, cables, packaging, etc.) and Apple's profits, I'm sure we're looking at $649 for a flash iPod classic.
But I'm just talking out of my ass here, where the hell is my coffee?
thats officially 8gb more than my current hard drive :o
I need a new drive ;)
Me and you both. We should go SSD, I know I will.
It was only 10 years ago when a 1GB flash drive cost a whopping $1000, sold by Kangaru
Or we could just wate two-three years more when these 128gb flash drives would cost around 20$
i found out a new usb manufacturer. USBDisk.biz they seem to be offering a High Capacity USB, following them on twitter @usbdisk. Is this for real? 128GB's no more external HDD's
