Video: ASUS Eee Keyboard running Moblin

Among the approximately two gazillion other things we saw at Computex this year, ASUS has demoed one of its Eee Keyboard PCs running Moblin. Currently just a prototype, it's unclear whether or not this guy sports different hardware than the device we've been seeing (we're guessing not), or whether this will become available when the XP version does sometime this month. That said, we're hoping that you can sleep better at night knowing that such a beast exists. We sure can. Video after the break.

How do you pronounce Eee anyway? Is it just a long vowel "E" sound for a second or two, or do you have to pronounced every E in the word (Eee-Eee-Eee) like a fucking monkey?
barc0de @ Jun 15th 2009 12:54PM
I always pronounce it "EEEEEE!" like a Mini-Me scream (a long "E")
Doh! @ Jun 15th 2009 1:04PM
I most often hear it pronounce as just "E" as in you r an Eeediot
macserv @ Jun 16th 2009 2:12AM
Everyone I know says "Triple-E".

This looks more like and probably would work better as a peripheral than a independent piece. It would be nice to have a remote like that, lots of potential here.
jimmy @ Jun 15th 2009 1:22PM
agreed. i think they should put out several docking versions instead of integrated processors. Just slide your iPhone, G1, Pre, Nokia, or whatever touch-based phone into the slot, and it turns into a touchpad for the computer. The pad can change for whatever app is active, as well as charging and syncing the device.

Exactly what I was thinking, add bluetooth, RF, IR, and harmony support then we'll call it a real winner.
simbr @ Jun 16th 2009 5:48AM
@jimmy
Reminds me of Sega's VMU for the Dreamcast.
ZaxCG2 @ Jun 15th 2009 1:05PM
Yo dawg, I heard you liked Taipei so we put Taipei in your keyboard so you can type while you Taipei.
181 @ Jun 15th 2009 1:08PM
you need to say the three E's in a high pitch with a knife in your hand, preferably a shadow cast on a shower curtain of a knife in your hand as you rotate from the elbow which each syllable.
Shunnabunich @ Jun 15th 2009 1:07PM
Words cannot express how badly I want to see an interactive LCARS UI on that little screen.

Kill the Trekkie with fire...

Rather than it having its own operating system, I'd rather have it as an external monitor where I could store all of my photoshop toolbars. Two monitors just ain't enough.
xconan @ Jun 15th 2009 1:42PM
you're right it would be nice to have the icons on the side pad instead of on the screen for more real estate...
thyomorb @ Jun 15th 2009 1:48PM
Like memory, disk space and processor speed, the more monitor area I have, the more I need.
JD @ Jun 15th 2009 1:12PM
I like this idea. Not sure what I would use it for... but it sure is neat!
naturlichfrisch @ Jun 15th 2009 1:12PM
Meh
dany_999 @ Jun 15th 2009 3:26PM
just wandering, would it be better if they will add mouse pad or at least right and left mouse button?
Platinum_Skeet @ Jun 15th 2009 1:14PM
If you can remote the image of whatever's on your PC to the keyboard and have full control of your PC this could come in handy...
simbr @ Jun 16th 2009 7:59AM
Remote Desktop/VNC
..but unless you had an abnormally small monitor on your desktop you'd be scrolling a lot.
Also, I don't know about VNC but if you used RDP on a Windows home desktop the desktop would log itself out, and on a server OS you'd have two seperate sessions. I have no idea how or if you can use the screen on another computer as a auxilliary monitor.
Retroman @ Jun 15th 2009 1:17PM
I'm sure I can find some way to use this with my arcade/emu cabinet. It will go nicely with my four mimo 7" screens I modded to the sides for no apparent reason last week.
Frankenstein Black @ Jun 15th 2009 1:21PM
Just thought about something. What about a keyboard similar to this with an enclosed drop in iPhone dock that positions it exactly like this one? That plus some type of VGA, DVI, HDMI, DP out to the big screen would be, what’s the words, 4KIN PHAT!!
Oddone @ Jun 15th 2009 1:57PM
I just...don't know what the hell I'd use this for. It seems overkill for any kind of remote, and too weak for me to use as a desktop hooked up to an LCD or whatever...
wengleung @ Jun 16th 2009 1:32AM
I still think they should've named it the kEeeyboard.
simbr @ Jun 16th 2009 8:02AM
..as at least one person comments on every article regarding this thing.
superhobo @ Jun 15th 2009 3:03PM
This isn't nearly as Fun as XP on that screen.
webon @ Jun 15th 2009 4:48PM
Sorry didn't understand, I don't understand korean
dan2600 @ Jun 15th 2009 5:53PM
wait...so computer is keyboard?
kingu @ Jun 15th 2009 8:30PM
Trying to drum up some enthusiasm with moblin meanwhile appologising on behalf of MS for having shown it. Asus may have a solid foot in the netbook market, and a few actually innovative products like this, but in going windows only they made a mistake. Likewise was xandros a mistake.
