iPhone 3G running OS 3.0 unlocked, ultrasn0w release coming Friday
The iPhone Dev-Team (no relation) have been teasing us for a little bit now with what they've been saying is an iPhone OS 3.0-compatible version of yellowsn0w, and tonight in a video presentation they unveiled ultrasn0w, which should let you unlock any iPhone on the market, running any version of the firmware from 3.0 on down. The trick to how they're getting the jailbreak hasn't been revealed yet for fear of Apple making a fix at the eleventh hour, but if everything goes according to plan, the new hacking software should be out Friday in time for the iPhone 3G S (no guarantee it'll work on the new device). Hit up the read link to watch the magic happen right before your very own eyes.

Cool? an Unlocked GSM phone Im shocked
It's also jailbroken. Which is pretty impressive in such a short timeframe...
It's sad that we're even commenting on this.
There is no excuse for locking the phone when THE CUSTOMER IS UNDER CONTRACT. We already have to pay the bill every month because of the contract, so we should have the right to take the phone to another carrier and pay them TOO if we want. Just like the airlines, the telcos get it both ways and we get reamed both ways.
But no; our representatives are bought.
@Information Central
I don't know how it is, state side, but here in Denmark there are some contracts that offer cheaper rates than those that come with the iPhone contract and now monthly subscription fees. Thats the Danish excuse. Naturally the phone companies want to lock the user to their rates and networks.
They should just make the damn thing awailable without contract :-\
Correction: In "contract and now monthly subscription fees", the word "now" should have been "no" ofcourse.
but will current jailbroken apps be compatible with 3.0?
I'm guessing wait until 3.0 is jailbroken, and those apps will be compatible.. No?
Not being sarcastic.. I'm holding off on 3.0 for this same reason. I don't want to break anything that's already (jail)broken.
Unofficial jailbreaks have allowed most developers to make their apps work on 3.0. Many work without modifications. Others will be fixed quickly.
As soon as QuickPwn is released tomorrow, upgrade! Don't hold off!
Yes
Man i cant believe the intelligence of these guys. They must start developing their own rival OS for better capable phones.
@gnugeek- i kind of thought (or hoped) the whole "custom firmware" with qwkpwn and the like was going to lead to that.
I unjailbroke (jailed?) my phone under 2.2.1 and was amazed at how much more quickly it ran. I may give it another shot under 3.0 but I'm quite enjoying the speed, even if I do miss SBSettings, PDANet and all the little tweaks that Jailbreak allows...
iPhone Hackers FTW
Wow, that was fast, lol
That's what you said.
No, that's what SHE said.
No, there is not a SHE in his life, therefore he is talking about himself.
Enjoy your hand.
wow if they are that quick their girlfriends must not be very satisfied :P
love those guys, love my iphone 3g
Agreed. iPhone Dev-Team, you are the best!
This just added $100 to the resale value of my iPhone 3G. Thank you iPhone Dev-Team.
You mean, subtracted $100, cause people are gonna want to buy the new 3GS with the jailbroken 3.0 firmware and not the older 3G with jailbroken 3.0 firmware.
Or people want a cheaper-than-3GS unlocked GSM iPhone 3G? Dumbass.
only difference i see is video and voice command... is it really worth the initial rush of $750 for an iphone 3gs unlocked? or $420 for an iphone 3g unlocked running 3.0?
my bet is the 3g......
Good. Time to get rid of that worthless default OS that is so 2005
Thought it was so 2007, hmmm... whatever.
Hello eBay. N97 will be here on Thursday. unlocked iPhone will probably pay for the N97.
i hope you love your threaded messages on your n97
And enjoy your small battery life!
Threaded messages?!?!?! WHOOOOOOAOAAAAAAAAA
@TimmyRaa
small battery life? i think not.. i have the N97 and get through the day without losing a battery bar.. thats texting and listening to music as well as browsing the web
Wow the devs are just amazing!
Will this work on the original iPhone running OS 3.0?
That one's already unlocked, always and forever.
Does this mean that for those of us with first gen iPhones, all we have to do is run a new version of quickpwn or pwnage tool?
And I assume like past versions the ispw files will be available on the dev teams site?

Actually for us with the original iPhone, we can simply upgrade if we don't value the jailbreak (which will come later today most likely anyway), as the device will stay activated and unlocked.
wow already nice!!!!!
Contradicting yourself there. "any iphone" yet "no guarantee it'll work on the new device"? Eh?
They said any iPhone on the market. The 3G S hasn't been released yet.
SWEET!!!
Love u Dev Team!!!!!!!
Seriously, i don't get the reason why people would unlock the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. In the US, you can only use 3G with AT&T since T-Mobile uses AWS :\, and in Canada they only have ONE major 3Gsm network, which is Rogers...
And in Mexico and Latin America, the iPhone is available in multiple paying options and with multiple carriers (ex: in Mexico you can get it in prepaid and postpaid) while in El Salvador you can get the iPhone on prepaid and postpaid with 2 of the major GSM networks...
Asia is out considering the iPhone is not very popular over there to begin with and in Africa most countries only have one compatible GSM network
Am i missing something?
I use the iPhone 3G on T-Mobile USA because of the GPS, and because I like the 3G hardware much more than the original.
hmm well maybe people dont want to use the ridiculous iphone plan, so instead unlock the phone and use the sim with their current cheaper plan
but then you have to pay $700-$900 for an unlocked iPhone 3G so you can only have GPS and a cheaper plan...o_O
not hating on the iPhone, but then why not go with a G1 or Behold if you want 3G and GPS?
I didn't pay that much for the phone. I traded a laptop I repaired for a G1, and then traded the G1 for a scratched up 16GB iPhone. The touchscreen failed, and I took it to Apple and they swapped it for a refurb.
I use my 3g on t-mobile (granted it's with a horrible rebel-sim currently) and my edge data generally runs faster than most of the 3G AT&T iPhone's my friends have. Plus my plan is extremely cheaper than AT&T.
travel much? the best part of AT&T is that it is GSM-based, like most of the rest of the world. By unlocking my iPhone (which it is...) I can go to London to work for a month, and just pop in a prepaid o2 SIM card. By swapping SIMS in each country I work, I get a local phone with local rates. That's why you unlock phones. Not for T-Mobile in the US.
I have two sim cards, one american and one asian, I like being able to use it in both Asia and America without having to pay ridiculous roaming fees.
You forgetting a small continent called Europe ;)
@Be Fearless
You're missing Europe. Here we have 3G networks covering most of the dry land, and by many more than just one carrier.
"Asia is out considering the iPhone is not very popular over there to begin with"
Yes you're missing something. Are you dumb? That's typical American ignorance. iPhone is probably more popular in Asia than at least one other continent.
ah.. Europe.
What about Europe? All of the major providers support 3G over here- that seems like a very good reason as to why people will want to unlock the phone...
Just about every 2nd-hand cell phone shop around Thailand has iPhones on display. Albeit they are Chinese fakes, but people do like the form factor and the "coolness" of the iPhone here too.
Having an unlocked iPhone makes sense if you are a world traveller. I happen to be & being able to use a separate sim rocks!
Time to unlock my friend's iPhone 3G. He has been using with TurboSIM (T-Mobile) and he has to reset the phone every now and then.
here's the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkaEGzVRk10
Good for them, screw you Apple.
Anyone on the east coast able to update yet?
don't eat the yellow snow.
Hey guys, sorry for the noob question, But what that guy is using that imitates his iphone on the Mac Screen, is that the SDK software? Or what? thank you :)
It's called Veencee, it allows you to use VNC to control your iPod
IMHO the jailbreak scene is all but over ... unlocks are another thing.......
when is 3.0 going to be released? midnight PST?
Last I heard (Not very reliable source though) was that its gonna launch on 9am PST on June 17 or 12pm EST. Also countries like Russia (Apple.ru) say that the Update will be on the June 17, meaning if it was to launch two hours later than 9am PST then for Russia it would be the 18th already.
Short version: We are gonna get it in the morning of June 17 PST
So now being able to get my soft outside the App store dictatorship is piracy.
You need your daily dose of STFU.
And reality, if companies think half the things they say in the EULA could hold up in court they have another thing coming, that's why they do anything to simply scare people into arbitration and leave it at that.
awww, I'm so looking forward for this unlocked GSM phone~
It's extremely hilarious to see that we are so excited about the iPhone hacked to be unlocked, while it is pretty much sold unlocked out of the box in many Asian countries, even by Apple themselves. If Apple really wants to be the market changer in US wireless market, sell the freakin iPhone unlocked. It's mind boggling that US consumers don't get the concept of a non-provider locked cellphone.
Would Apple really make a CDMA (did i say that right?) iphone version though?
@mgsrocks1: Maybe, but most of the world use GSM.
The consumers get it, it's the companies that don't.
Which countries? I only know of Hong Kong that sells them officially unlocked by Apple.
@SiLO: Consumers in Asia get it. That's why Apple sell the iPhone unlocked over there, out of the box. Consumers in the US don't get it. If they do, there would be an outcry for locked phones, yet I don't see that and locked phones are the norm here. I mean think about it, here in the US, people always say "Oh, when will provider such and such carry this/that phone." That kind of thinking doesn't really jive in Asian market, at least none that I see. Nobody are waiting for any carriers to carry any specific phones. It's like waiting for Comcast to carry certain Dell laptops. Doesn't make sense, does it.
@DragonJade: In Singapore, iPhone is sold via Singtel, but it's unlocked out of the box. I expect the same thing for other countries like Indonesia, etc.
well you can call people ignorant or understand the difference in markets. Unfortunately there are 3 major carriers in the US. Verizon, Sprint and ATT. (not counting tmobile, us celluar, etc) They all work on different networks. ATT uses the GSM network, like the majority of the world. Apple sells it locked to ATT b/c those customers now have to use their phone with ATT which results in a kickback of revenue back to Apple. (Kick back involves part of subsidy when phone is purchased, and part of monthly revenue).
So what would the ignorance of US customers have anything to do with it? If my iPhone is unlocked in the US I can really just use it with TMobile, which has shittier 3G and worse coverage. Not verizon or Sprint, therefore it does matter which carrier has which phone.
@Dima Kovalev: Unlocked is not just being able to use it on T-mobile, but being able change SIM chips to use local providers when going overseas, and being able to get the iPhone without having to use post-paid plans. If Apple is more concerned about kickbacks, then why would they sell the iPhone unlocked out of the box in countries like Singapore/Hong Kong? Because if they didn't, the consumers over there won't buy the iPhone, unlike in the US where people are still lining up at AT&T despite whining about the price/lack of MMS/tethering. Just to show the silliness of US consumers, AT&T is selling phones at full price without contract, yet those phones are still provider-locked. Pay-as-you-go phones bought from AT&T/T-Mobile are also locked. It's mind boggling. Do you want to buy a landline phone that is locked to Qwest/your local phone provider? Nope. Then why cellphone should be any different?
The funny part is how people are whining about AT&T's prices, yet the pre-orders were sold out. Go figure.
@pika2000 Your original point was that they do it because US consumers are too dumb to know otherwise. I remember apple selling the iphone in germany unlocked for tmobile, it was close to $1000US. So yes, they will sell it unlocked, but a huge price premium, making up for lost revenue. I can currently travel with my iphone to naother country, and use their cell network, i just have to call at&t and add the international package. Now if youre main point is about using prepaid simcards abroad, it definitely wont work, which hurts the consumer.
But from a business aspect (At&t/apple), why would u want your customers using someone elses network, when u can earn a huge premium by offering international services.
At&t is paying a $300 subsidy (just making the # up) for you to buy the phone at a cheaper cost, you agree to use the phone only with at&t for a minimum of 2 yrs. I have iPhone 3g, i was pissed that apple wasnt going to let me upgrade at the "upgrade" price, but i wasnt whining about it, because it makes sense from a business aspect. Especially during a recession, you think companys care more about customer satisfaction or the bottom line?
(Btw i unlocked and sold my original iphone, my first iphone 3g, and now waiting for the 3.0 unlock so i can sell it and cover the cost of a 3gs)
@DragonJade: Belgium, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and France are the countries I know about that sell the iPhone unlocked.
@Dima Kovalev: It seems that you fell into the same confusion as other US consumers. Unlocked != full-price. For example, in Singapore, all subsidized/contract phones, including smart phones like Windows Mobile, Nokia, HTC, and the iPhone 3G, are sold unlocked out of the box. Subsidy does not correlate to provider-locking.
My point is that AT&T can do what they're doing is because the US consumers love paying for locked phones, and for whatever reason don't comprehend the idea of cellphones being independent from the providers. Simply mind boggling.
@pika2000 Thanks. I'm heading to HK, Sing and Malaysia in October. I just might get myself one.
blah blah blah im so important.
@ Da Spider
Agreed. =D
Oh man I didn't get any thanks for sending in the info about this earlier, oh well, still love Engadget.
I have a question.. If I jailbreak a iPhone 3G and insert a T-Mobile sim in it with data plan on Tmobile.. will I still be able to download apps and run it w/o any problems? Or I cant download any apps at all.. this is a noob question I know.. thats why im asking.. ive only jailbroken my 1st gen iphone once.. so im still new to this.
thanks!
Of course you can get apps if you use the iPhone with T-Mobile. Think of it as an iPod Touch with a phone and camera.
Yes, I am doing that on my current iPhone.
Can't wait until Friday! Can't wait for the jailbreak neither so I'm paying for my software update later today :)
No reason to jailbreak unless you're a pirate? Clearly only pirates like to change the look of their iPhone, scrobble their songs to Last.FM, run background apps or run any of a ton of completely legal third party apps.
Guys, I'm not that up2date. I've read all the comments but noone seems to care: Will ultrasn0w and 3.0 work on 1st gen iPhones? As in the ones before 3G. They said "any iPhone on the market" but kept mentioning the 3G. Just want to be sure.
Thanks.
@DragonJade: Belgium, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and France are the countries I know about that sell the iPhone unlocked.
Thanks, Kyle. I found a bit more information here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock
so now get myself a video cam on 3g is piracy?
so now browsing files on my iphone 3g is piracy?
idiot...
Evil scum breaking the law and stealing apps.
"The trick to how they're getting the jailbreak hasn't been revealed yet for fear of Apple making a fix at the eleventh hour"
The trick they are using for the jailbreaking is the same as before, Apple can't patch that hole on the current hardware (we'll need to wait and see what the deal with the 3G[S] is). They clearly mention that they are using an exploit in the baseband to unlock the phone but the didn't go into specifics due to fear of Apple making a fix at the last minute.
I think you got a bit confused in your post, jailbreaking is a done deal, it's the unlock that's new here.
Love the dev Team and bugout!
unlocking it is cool, stealing software is not. If you guys can find some way around this I'll be very grateful for one..
I just refreshed the Apple page and now it says June 18th WTF? I am in Dallas, Texas
should this news not have leaked, as im pretty sure now the apple hounds are trying to find the exploit.
