Palm Prefection iPhone theme lets you have the best of both worlds, kinda
So you're an iPhone owner with a massive case of Pre jealousy, but you've got another year left on your AT&T contract. We know you're out there, and we know you're struggling -- you're feeling totally alone and misunderstood, like a lone voice struggling to be heard amongst the din of a thousand push notifications. A gadget nerd without a clan.
You don't have to live this way. You don't have to be trapped into a single touch interface aesthetic by the fear of early-termination fees and loss of Tap Tap Revenge compatibility. You have a choice -- you can jailbreak your phone and install the Palm Prefection theme. You can show the world you're not afraid to mix it up. Sure, you won't be able to multitask for real and no amount of fevered prayer will ever bring a gesture area to your iPhone, but that doesn't mean you won't be taking a stand. Fly high, butterfly. Video after the break.
[Thanks, Dave]

Ambitions of a Ridah... CUTE!
lols!
I see Relapse to the left as well.
Props!
Technically, it's "Ambitionz Az A Ridah" but I'm glad we're holding Tupac to the same high grammar standards to which we hold all commenters.
That fake Palm interface even looks better on an iPhone. That's the end of the Pre. Nope, that's right, Palmboys still want full background processing and a user-replaceable battery to make their lives complete.
Yep hypePhones are lame. You have to jailbreak to prevent the damn thing from being a pathetic useless toy.
Happy Birthday 2Pac.
that's just hilarious, he has to "close" each program to open a new one. Nowhere near the greatness of the PRE, but it's an attempt. Keep trying guys.
OK I suppose. Personally I prefer the originali Iphone interface, but who's to complain if someone wants to row their own boat?
I have to agree. I do like the look of the Pre. Not had a hands on with one yet, but it does look like a nice handheld. I do much prefer the iPhone interface though. Winterboard can be quite tricky with some themes too. This doesn't look like it's worth the effort.
Don't be fooled! Winterboarding IS torture!
agreed. i love my iphone, and the Pre seems cheap and fragile (and yes, I have used one for a week, not a blind assumption!)
But, i do love the interface. The typography is beautiful, and I love the alpha-dividers in the lists. So much more elegant than the grey bars that divide the alpha-lists on the iPhone. Hopefully the Pre app store will fill up with options, and Palm puts out a higher quality piece of hardware. Won't "kill" the iPhone, but will spur innovation and competition! Bring it on!!!
hey engadget! skyblaze here tryna make a comment and shizzle... what gives with my old email account? everytime i try and post something all i get is a yellow bar saying:
"You did it!
An e-mail has been sent to confirm your e-mail address, as well as a password for you to use if you comment regularly. Click on the link within the e-mail to activate your comment and password!"
whats the deal?? i can log in and out of my user page, but i cant make any more comments! i just got my N97 and all and wanted to tell the community ya digg! ya gotta fix the comments, man... goin into withdrawal here :(
I think you may be commenting under "new readers." Try clicking "returning" readers tab between AIM and New Readers and give it a shot. Just my $0.02!
i was on returning readers i swear! i tried both new and returning with my old email address and neither of them worked! they didnt even send me any kind of confirmation email until i used my other email address... sux balls man :( i just wanna use my one account for engadget shizzle... thats where my history is, ya digg...
yeah I digg. does everyone else have to type in their email/pw everytime they wanna comment too? or is it just me :(
I lost access with my original account as well, but I thought I got banned for my colourful way with words and people. ;)
I have to type in my email and password each time. Very annoying.
I had same issue. Apparently, Engadget comment system is glitchy at times.
makes me fell a lil less anxious knowing im not the only one.... guess ill just deal with the new address till things get sorted out (IF they get sorted out.... )
either way, a lil FEEDBACK from the HIGHER UPS would be nice tho! -___-'
This site has a garbage dump method of user account management. I caved in and started using my damned AIM account.
This isn't Digg, it's Engadget.
OS 3.0 (and the inevitable 3.0 jailbreak) comes out tomorrow.
Any chance its gonna work on 3.0?
I read somewhere that Winterboard wasn't playing nice with 3.0....
Winterboard works just fine, you just need the proper kernel patches, which the fake quickpwn does not have.
yes, the kernal patches.
I remember Saurik explaining something of the sort.
I guess the "official" 3.0 jailbreak will work fine with WB.
good stuff!!
Very slick!
Oh please, we are not jealous of some phony, cheap, plastic junk known as PREhistoric.
"We"? So all Apple users are a giant hive-mind and no room for different opinions are allowed?
hahaha the PREhistoric!! good one, I totally get it, because it's supposed to be all... old and shit, even though it's only like a week and a half old, ahaha you guys are so original! I am so telling all my friends about this halarious new joke about the Pre.
if i buy skinny jeans a fedora would that make you jealous.
"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
It seems many iPhone fanboys are on stage 2.
Please don't incorporate me into you way of thought just because I use a Mac, Sy.
And THastings, please know that not everyone who uses a Mac is as big a douche as Sy, we're mostly good people :D
lol @ "hive mind."
We are the iPhoneFanboys. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
@Epsilon-Not
Apple-product users often refer to themselves as "we". Apple marketing has been tapping into humans need for being part of a group for years. And clearly done a very good job at it.
i-Borg! "Resistance is futile", "You will be i-similated"
Nice, I feel sorry for iPhone users having to jailbreak their phone just so they can get it looking like a decent phone instead of a toy.
Word.
What's up troll?
I already have my phone jailbroken, it's just, do I want to take to time to set this all up?
you're kidding.
Yea that's the point. Takes so long just so you can change your theme.
Facepalm...
How many themes are there for the Palm Pre? How long does it take to change one?
I never said the Pre allowed that. I have a Blackberry myself, but I am no fanboy. My previous phones were WM and Symbian, all allowing to change themes natively. So what's up with this? Same thing with the Pre. Though of course if I had to get an iPhone or a Pre, i would definitely get a Pre.
I'm no fanboy either, I just don't think you should go calling the iPhone a toy based on what? How it's interface looks?
My 3G is to be honest, my first 'smartphone', but there was a reason I never bothered with BB, WM or Symbian- cost, and what I got for that cost. I'm not dissing the Pre, but I have yet to see any phone that rivals what I get with my 3G now (including the app store and the jailbreak community).
Jailbreaking takes about the same amount of time as updating your firmware including backing up and restoring your settings. even quicker if you don't and start fresh.
changing a theme is as easy as opening Winterboard, putting a check mark next to the theme and then waiting for the re-spring - roughly 35 seconds
A toy based on the limited capabilities/interface. It is meant to attract people like you, first time buyers of higher end phones. I don't consider the iPhone a smartphone due to its limited capabilities. It's got eyecandy (hence the toy part) yet none of the features of 'big daddy' smartphones.
Not really though, logicbomb.de
To actually use this theme here, you need to rearrange all your springboard pages, not to mention add and set up a few apps from cydia.
Plus, I already have my apps put away using Catagories instead. All in all, the time starts to add up if I really wanted to properly use this theme.
And what 'big daddy' features are you speaking of?
backgrounding apps? (push notifications in 3.0 / backgrounding apps via jailbreak)
What else is there that it's missing that isn't:
a) actually already there
b) in 3.0
c) can be added via jailbreaking?
Just because I was a 'first time buyer' doesn't mean I'm stupid. It's not like I didn't consider my other options, it just means that I decided on the iPhone when it was all said and done.
I'd go for the iPhone. It's more widely used and supported, meaning more apps, more of a future. Android has entered the realm and it's still mainly dominated by the iPhone, with more companies wanting to get involved and more and more stuff for it being released. The pre does look really nice and I wouldn't say no to one at all, but if I had to choose I'd go with the iPhone for the above reasons.
As for the jailbreaking, it's not like it's a hard task. I used to have one before I ended up on Blackberry like yourself, and did the jailbreak just for free apps, rather than paying for them in the app store but Winterboard (the theme thing) is easy. Just download your theme and activate in winterboard and you're done. It's actually simpler than going through settings>themes>this>that etc. like with other phone. It's more than just themes with that too. You can change practically any single little thing individually if you choose, or mix themes up. Something I have never come across in Symbian or even WM
KEROLiUKAS: Ignorant dipshits like you are hysterical to me. You call the iPhone a "toy", but you haven't yet been able to say why, exactly. All you keep saying is "limited capabilities". You say you would take the Pre over the iPhone despite the fact that the Pre falls short of the iPhone in a large number of ways - in fact if you read the reviews, the most common theme is that people like the hardware of the Pre better.
And guess what, that comparison is based on the current iPhone, not the 3GS which has at minimum double the processing power, a more powerful graphics chip, more RAM, a better camera, etc. etc. etc. With over 50,000 apps and a serious boost in processing and graphics horsepower, not to mention all the rest of the new hardware and software features of the 3GS/iPhone OS 3.0, the only one with "limited capabilities" is the Pre.
@ Zak.
Ignorant dipshits like you are hysterical to me. You say the Pre has "Limited Capabilities", but you haven't yet been able to say why, exactly.
You are just as ignorant as the original poster, because all you did was list off all the upgrades to the iPhone. You didn't prove how the Pre is limited. Congratulations. You're an idiot.
Just compare the features of the iPhone with those of Nokia's high-end phones and you find yourself with a laundry list of features missing on the iPhone. The only things, admittedly major ones, going for the iPhone are the UI and easy access to 3rd-party apps.
