Ready for a double dose of
Tegra newsbits? We've been wondering what's packed in the
Zune HD for some time now, but apparently
PC Perspective has had the answer since Computex and didn't realize the newsworthiness until now. According to the article, NVIDIA staffers told the site that its uber-powerful Tegra processor will be the heart and soul of Microsoft's revised PMP. There's been no official word from anyone, and for all we know it might've been some (possibly misinformed) employee mouthing off for kicks. If true, however, it'd be one helluva 'screw you' from Microsoft to
Windows Mobile fans, who've been waiting over a year at this point to see some retail hardware running on NVIDIA's mobile platform. We've put in calls to both companies for some sort of statement, but we're not getting our hopes up.
In other news, a group of researchers from Georgia Tech and Savannah College of Art and Design are showing off some of CPU's impressive potential with an augmented reality game
ARhrrrr. Using a Tegra-powered mobile dev kit, the game projects a 3D town based on a two-dimensional diagram where you tap the screen to shoot zombies, or lay Skittles in real life to serve as virtual bombs. We've seen
similar implementations before, but we're admittedly quite infatuated with this one, and as a bonus, there's video of the demo after the break.

How so?
Engadget staff are contractually obliged to ensure that every Microsoft post includes something negative. It's against the rules to be 100% positive about anything from Microsoft.
The WinMo hardware manufacturers are their own companies. It is their decision, not Microsofts whether they could be using Tegra in a handset.
HTC is still busy clearing out Qualcomm processors from their inventory and dont want to use anything else yet which would show how bad they are and the other companies are dragging their feet getting something new to market. Toshiba is the only one to get something good out there.
This isnt Microsofts fault. They dont make the hardware.
That demo is cool. A portable game that you need to unroll a poster onto a table... and go to the candy store.
It's a good proof of concept though.
re: though
I find it neat, personally. It's scary to say it, but it's a form of nostalgia for me I guess, what with board games and all. A nice retro experience.
"I'd get tired of running around a table real fast."
Not if it was on a turntable.
I'd get tired of running around a turntable.

Um, in Windows Mobile's case, wouldn't that be the responsibility of the phone's hardware maker to add that in?
No, because MS is evil, don't you know that by now.
PS. They also killed the Easter Bunny, Santa, and the world's only hot, guy friendly lesbian.
make me a 120GB Zune HD
make me a sandwich
sudo make me a sandwich
jon, what island are you living on that has only one hot guy friendly lesbian?
the Tegra may (or may not) have a great integrated GPU, but nVidia needs to update the processor design as it still uses ARM11 cores! It's June 2009.. all high-end smartphone and MID-type devices from here on out should be using Cortex-A8 or Snapdragon cores....
Sounds like Engadget had to pay the man for those three Macbooks.
MS didn't give me a "screw you." Engadget did.
Thank you. I came down here just to post what you said.
+1 but it's ok.
I'm hoping that EA creates a R.U.S.E. port for the Zune HD.
Zune HD or iPod Touch 3G (as in 3rd generation)...gonna have to wait and see.
What about a Pre?
This is gonna be awesome for Warhammer battlefields.
Are you not all glad that *at last* we are given real choices when buying a mobile device ? Snapdragon, Tegra, Atom, and whatever others instead of poor perf circuits only good for making a call. Android, WebOS, instead of just WinMo.
Netbooks were (are?) the first step to salvation. (Salvation being powerful all-purpose mobile devices that you can actually hold in your hands and use with one finger) (Please restrain from mentioning the iPhone here: I KNOW)
And to the ones who think this Tegra device is a waste: you got to think a little bit more "outside of the box". Is it better to have roxxor hardware (ok, I'm exaggerating there) and outputs or bigger screens or low end hardware with integrated-screen-only display? Besides, 800*600 is pretty much the best you can get for now. Should they have waited for 7in 1920*1080 amoled touchscreens before doing all the R&D work ?
HIt my nuts on the corner of the table, fall to the ground and choke on the skittles I had 'recycled'.
Awesome!
warhammer 40k willl be done RIGHT very soon......,it had me soon as i heard it was not a apple!,and had nivida and tegra and microsoft in the text!
Augmented Tower Defense anyone?
The comment that sold me.

I'm sure it'll be an awesome pet dog game for you to play while the saps who get the Zune HD play boring old Zombie Hunting games.
Well Im excited for the day Ill be able to go to the park hook up some spectacles to my phone and be able to fight zombies. Sure Ill look nuts but hey if I get three friends together a black guy in a dress shirt and tie a girl with a pink hoodie and a veteran we could have a game idea there........ Hey wait a minute......
Its the first game you'll hear someone scream: "Stop It! you're eating all my bombs!"
Jokes aside, Its a pretty huge implementation of AR and cellphone tech that actually seems to be ready for a release...well done!
So many comments ripping/backing the hardware. The augmented reality rocks! That's what this is all about. Zombies are bad.
And even more important, ENGADGET DOES HEAR YOU!!! I sent this yesterday!!! And for all of you talking about tegra and hardware... blooy is the only one who get it right... Augmented Reality is the point, imagine in a few years, no matter what your phone is, there is going to be 239472389723894 uses for it...
I see reality simulator rooms around the corner.
ALL HATERS MUST DIE!!!
1) Fuck Arm Nvidia is the leader in GPU tech...CUDA is the future
2) This is the coolest thing ever I love it
3) Find me another handheld device that does AR...o' wait there isn't one (ps3 is not mobile) and don't say a laptop.
4) Zomies Rock
