Vodafone doesn't waste any time, offers Samsung Jet free on contract

Samsung may have only just officially taken the wraps off its Jet touchscreen phone yesterday, but it looks like folks in the UK can now already get their hands on one courtesy of Vodafone -- and for free, no less. Of course, that's if you're willing to sign a two-year contract and grab a minimum £20 per month plan, which actually isn't too bad a deal as far as these things go. In case you missed it, or understandably have it confused with one of Samsung's other new phones, the Jet packs a 3.1-inch AMOLED display, along with a 5-megapixel camera, built-in GPS, a speedy 800MHz processor, a WebKit-based browser and, last but not least, Samsung's un-smartphone TouchWiz 2.0 interface.

Why dont we get any cool smartphones for free in the US? With amoled no less...
Cuz they know Americans got money,.,.
That may be true but its worth less...
I do feel bad for the US when it comes to phones, I am mad because O2 would only offer me an 18 month contract last time out. I got used to a free top of the line handset every 9 months :(
The tarrifs that you guys are offered suck huge balls also.
@pedro: You think the U.S. is bad? Check out the tariffs offered to their northern neighbour. Canada has the worst operator plans ever. 3 year contracts are mandatory.
this is not a smartphone
3 years is a real stinger, I think I would an hero.
Bcoz they know Americans is so much poor compared to EU. And they can sell it double price in eu.
Do you think US plans suck ball? You haven't seen the ones we're offered in Brazil. And to that, add expensive rates, poor signal, laughable customer service... And phones are very expensive, too. Here a 16GB iPhone 3G isn't yours for less than US$ 1000... Oh, by the way, that's the price of the Wii when it came out here.
FREE?!?!?
still not worth it
If you consider £20 per month free...
How thin is this ??
Holy crap, it's faster than iPhone ??
Most new phones are...
Ooooh looks interesting.
most phones in the uk are free on 18 month contracts from around £30 a month, even brand new smart phones... this isnt unusual.
2 years is a bit steep though. 18 months is bad enough!
They were advertising it on Engadget mobile yesterday before Sammy's big reveal but not linking the advert to anything.
...Carrier exclusivity annoys me...
Its about time.
Its about time I won.
Its about time that this prize is so marvelous.
Its about time I thanked you.
Its about time!
Um..its about time you posted in the right place.
This is not an recession prize.
I guess it's because these devices are so expensive to buy and use that there's lots to choose from, if the 2 or 3 big players in this game lowered the prices I guess it would flush many phones out of the market.
Can they at least not do the same group shot as the iPhone?
I've had this question for awhile and this article just reminded me, why isn't touchwiz smartphone software? It's based on Winmo right? Can someone clear this us for me. Please and thank you
TouchWiz is just Samsung's UI. They have a TouchWiz UI for WinMo, S60, and here, like the jet, they just make TouchWiz for feature-phones.
MAN why can't our carriers do this...
It will be available in the United States after a year (probably on Verizon) for $199.99 (after rebate) on a NEW 2-yr contract.
HOLY CRAP!!!
Why the hell have they made a 'feature phone' (i.e. a phone without many features) with an 800 MHz processor? That makes no sense.
If they could only teach Verizon to be this quick.
haha "free"
asia got all the cool phones and the mobile internet is so much faster and more colors to choose from.
I have an iPhone 3G and I think it's a great device. That said, it's disappointing that a newer screen wasn't put into the 3GS when you see that Samsung is able to give them away with AMOLED. An even bigger uptick in battery time would have been nice. I'm guessing it didn't happen because (a) Apple didn't need it to sell or (b) the technology isn't quite where they want it to be.
So what is this? basically Behold 2.0?
Apple didn't do AMOLED probably because they're getting huge discount rates on their current screen and don't want to have to take the hit on a new screen with a higher cost but same price.
Sick dude.
Samsung 3gs?
so when's the omnia HD coming out over here?
The phone looks great, but am I missing something about why this thing is getting a lot of attention? It's just a feature phone with a Webkit browser right?? (Not that that's a bad thing - it's definitely welcome).
More Photos of the new samsung series, from today, also the Omnia II with Win 6.5: http://www.dtown.co.il/articles/847.html
meh
About time.
What's up with that center button? Is it supposed not to let you press up and down? Or is it just a home button? Sorry for the ignorance here.
the center button is a simple home button, nothing more.
Got the phone for a few days, for ~330 € (bought in Asia).
Screen is fantastic. Bright, damn precise. The UI is rather fast, so is the general impression the phone gives.
The DivX playback is impressive, no slowndown, you can play your DivX and Xvid directly copied from your PC without any resize or re-encoding.
The camera (5Mpix+LED Flash) is quite good too, and record up to 720p videos at 30fps, the result is actually quite impressive on your PC screen.
The usb based sync software is a bit behind my expectations, refused to work on vista + oulook 2007. Worked on outlook 2003 for the contacts. I could not get the schedule to be sync'ed on my phone :(
The GPS : strangely enough they claim picture geotagging and 3D maps software : I could not find it, and geotagging seems to be disabled for the moment.
I have not tested the Wifi performance so far, same for bluetooth.
Last word, the battery lifetime seems quite good, not seen battery so far going to zero after 3 days playing with the device.
