WSJ: T-Mobile's myTouch 3G coming this summer
Looks like our hopeless optimism might win again. Android lovers who didn't get their hands on the Google Ion (a.k.a. HTC Magic) already can look forward to a summer launch of T-Mobile's version, myTouch 3G. According to the Wall Street Journal citing, the ever-resourceful "people familiar with the matter" group, all the details will be announced next week. Of course, the definition of "summer" can be stretched pretty far, we dare say even into September, but regardless of that technically, it seems promising the G1 successor is just over the horizon. Excited? We are.

I hope it comes out soon!
I wouldn't call the HTC Magic shitty. It has a much better form factor than the G1, is faster, has more memory, and all it does away with is the keyboard. Which some people obviously don't like but the predictive text on the Magic is amazing. I found it MUCH easier to type with than the iPhone and almost as good as the keyboard typing on the G1 when I got used to it. IMO the keyboard on the G1 was never really that good of a keyboard.
The lack of a 3.5mm jack sucks, but at least you can get an adapter for it, and the fact you can swap batteries gives it an advantage over the iphone. Also you can swap memory, which is another advantage.
The only negative I've really noticed on the HTC Magic is the accelerometer is slow, its slower than the 3GS by quite a bit (judging by the youtube video) and the fact that you cant save apps to memory sticks (without root access, which is fairly easy to get if you know what you're doing so it really isnt much of a negative). iPhone also has way more applications right now although if you're not that into games and novelty apps the Android Market has pretty much everything you need.
All in all its a solid alternative to the iPhone.
That was supposed to be replied to Ruben, oh well.
It still uses the same "series" Qualcomm processor, so its still a piece of trash (trust me, I know).
It does have 288MB of ram vs. 192, but the ram is NOT the limiting factor of this device.
I agree the form factor is better, but it still "feels" cheap. The matte finish makes the G1 feel infinity more solid than the gloss-tastic nature of this. This is of course subjective.
The fact that the Qualcomm processor is garbage is not.
not sure I would call this a successor to the G1. sure it has a lot more memory but still not nearly enough local storage. One thing to note is that it is using a similar but older generation processor. I believe the G1 uses a 65nm version instead of the 90nm version used in the magic. It's underclocked quite a bit on the G1 and since the battery life is slightly better on the magic I would assume they have done the same. There are a couple of good cpu overclocking apps that allow you to run the processor at the full 528MHZ it was designed for instead of 384 or whatever it's set at by default.
also I don't feel the keyboard is ready for prime time. I only use the keyboard on my G1 when I am too lazy to open the keyboard. It's not as good as the iphone's soft keyboard which is not that great either.
so really it looks like this is a ram upgrade in a thinner body
If its the same as this: http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=true&_windowLabel=Wireless_BuyFlow_Portlet_Definition&Wireless_BuyFlow_Portlet_Definition_actionOverride=/portlets/consumer/wireless/phoneBuyflow/showPage_ForPhone&Wireless_BuyFlow_Portlet_DefinitionproductId_Detailed=MAGICBLKR&_pageLabel=WRLS_BuyFlow
then its a pretty shitty phone. The G1 feels much more solid, which Rogers also has. I went to Future Shop to see it and it feels cheaper than the Diamond.
The Qualcomm chip and the lack of 3.5mm jack absolutely kills this phones potential. The saving grace of the G1 is the solidity of it, but it suffers from the same shortcomings.
As an added note, Samsung has shown how to make devices, like the Omnia 2 and the Omnia Pro which both make the Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 look like the pieces of shit they are. I would wait for Samsung's answer for an Android phone.
HTC deserves to get its ass kicked around for being so damn complaisant (Owner of a Touch Pro).
Samsung already answered and its Android phone is fuglier than the Ion.
"compliasant"? lmfao phail
Can't wait for this phone. Just hope it comes out soon or I'll end up waiting for the Sammy i7500
Ugly is subjective. I would consider it much nicer looking, and it lacks the glossiness that kills this phone. I still have to see it in person, but from pictures, it looks much better than this cheap looking pile. But thats my opinion. The below are facts:
The AMOLED screen already puts this phone to shame, along with an actual 3.5mm jack, and the larger battery.
The 528MHz processor kind of scares me, though.
Sorry, I meant Complacent.
I guess we all are not all perfect like you are. /sarcasm
Its hands down not a shitty phone. I have stopped using my Iphone for this. It does NOT look cheap at all and everyone who sees it LOVES it and asks where they can get it. The keyboard is GREAT, and believe me I HATE the iphone keypad, but for some reason i make almost no mistakes with this. My ONLY gripe would be i wish it was a little bit bigger..its small, smaller thank the Iphone. Yes it take one whole second to rotate the screen but i didnt find it to be a problem.
Oh and by the way the above photos are of my husbands phone that we posted on Android Forums.
I've been using my Google Ion for several days now and everybody who sees it seems pretty convinced that it is the nicest looking phone they have ever seen. Its build quality is solid as a rock, unlike the wobbly and creaky G1.
This is an absolutely gorgeous phone and it feels great in your hand; it's significantly smaller and lighter than the G1 while packing a significantly larger battery. It really puts the G1 to shame in just about every way as far as look and feel goes, and I was really a big fan of the G1.
so will it carry the rumored 5mp camera and uma, or just be a tmobile branded magic from vodafone?
Hope so. Otherwise I'll probably pass on it and wait for the Samsung Android phone.
mytouch... that's original
T-Moile sucks! I can't say that loud enough or with any more conviction. My experience with T-Mobile couldn't have been worse. *&^*&^ you T-Mobile!
did they rape you literally because your very mad...
wtf is wrong with htc and not putting 3.5mm jacks on their phones? there is no reason to not include it and everyone wants the ability to play music with a standard set of head phones. Fail.
I don't understand why it is taking T-Mobile so long in releasing this phone. Here in Hong Kong, HTC Magic is all over in the market. Not even anything new anymore.
I believe because they are not releasing it the same as the ones available in Hong Kong. The version here is supposed to have 3G and UMA, which is not on any of the other versions. That chipset should be new, and it will have the t-mobile AWS Bands plus play nice with teh Hotspot@home service (UMA) That is likely the reason for the delay behind all other carriers that do not have UMA to test/develop compatability
I wish this would come to Cingular! Windows mobile blows!
Agreed on both points.
Buy it and weep over all the cool apps you won't be able to run without a keyboard.
Point taken, typing shouldn't be too much of a proble. But the NES emulators need the keyboard, I bet a lot of people haven't taken this into consideration.
Try holding the menu key
Of you are wondering: The soft-keyboard comes up
Still not verry ok for fast apps but it works
NES, MAME, SNES basically all the cool emulators will need the physical keyboard. I can't imagine myself buying an Android phone without a keyboard.
I've installed pretty much every app on the Ion that I ever used on my G1. The only ones that don't work are the console emulators and the Doom port. Since I rarely played action games on my phone in the first place, it's no great loss. Totally worth it for the improved form factor.
another poorly designed/cheap looking handset from HTC. I ventured into HTC territory by purchasing a FUZE (aka touch pro) and was sorely dissapointed with the crappy software (gimmicky touchflo) and very poor design/build quality. Granted it ran WinMo 6.1 but even with cooked ROMS it was still a pos. Overrated imo.
...not to pile on HTC, but after 3 Touch Diamonds since February, I finally went with a Blackberry.
Some real issues with the software AND hardware.
How is this phone poorly designed?
Also, you prefer the way winmo comes stock as apposed to touchflo? you must be crazy.
1) I never said I preferred WinMo over Android. Even if I did.. who cares
2) Look at the phone. It looks like some kind of cheap chinese knock off. no offense.
3) Touchflo? are you kidding? I disabled it. I'd rather deal with a cooked winmo rom over some half assed HTC UI. The accelerometer in HTC phones at least in the FUZE are way too slow and non-reactive.
4) Simple fact, they need to step their game up as samsung, sony, nokia, apple have been releasing solid handsets. Maybe even Motorola with their upcoming Android phones. With all the next wave of phones about to be unleashed, this is the best HTC can do?
5) I'm no expert but I've been using cellphones since the motorola brick days. From my experience, HTC isn't quite there.
You really can't judge the look of this phone from the above blurrycam pictures. It looks amazing in person, much smaller than the iPhone and perfect curves everywhere. It's definitely well designed.
Google Ion AKA T-Mobile G2 AKA T-Mobile myTouch AKA HTC Magic AKA Android Dev Phone 2 AKA there is one more name.
Even though it has a lot of names - i love it!
Once again...all of you are the reasons I don't generally read forums. Haters! If you don't like something you should all just move on and play with the toys you do like. Leave the forums and the speculation for those of us looking forward to this device and those who already own it to give us guidance in our decision making. By the way...how many of you that are lambasting this device actually own it? Also, those of you who ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL KEYBOARD shouldn't be anywhere near commenting on this. It doesn't have one. Get over it. Go play with your G1 or get a Touch Pro 2 or a Blackberry or whatever. None of this is constructive. You are doing everyone interested in actually owning this a disservice.
I'll be thrilled to finally test this when it comes out here. I'm not sold either, given the promise of the Samsung i7500 in the future. But, headphone jack not withstanding, I'll reserve my judgement and negative opinions 'til after I've actually handled the hardware. Please people! Get a frakkin' life!!!!!!!!!
This looks a million times better in real life - it was just released over here in Australia. I'd even go so far as to say that the black one (which engadget never seems to put a picture of!) looks even better than the iPhone...
I Have a HTC Magic and i dont really like the android software, im going back to using my HTC Touch HD running mobile 6.1 soooo much better!
You shouldn't have bought the Magic if you already had the Touch HD.
You're comparing the best and most thought out WinMo device with an immature Magic design and an immature Android OS.
Android will start shining with Donut, or Eclair.
Looks very cheap..........
I had the diamond worst phone ever windows sucked, had to take the battery out to unfreeze daily..........
Thanks but I'll wait for the Samsung i7500.
I like to complain about phones missing features I must have and looking like toys. HURRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
anyone know what 3G bands this will utilize? i've tried getting specs on the Ion/Magic, and i've only seen 900/2100mhz for HSDPA/WCDMA (Euro). i haven't seen anythingi on the MyTouch however.
The myTouch uses 1700 for 3G on T-Mobile's US network.
If you're a AT&T user, you can import the Rogers' version of the phone up in Canada since it runs on 850/1900 for 3G.
I've got one of the Google Ion's that are black. It looks slick. Not cheap looking or feeling at all. I thought I would prefer a physical keyboard, since I never had much luck typing on an iphone keyboard, but I picked up the typing on this thing with relative ease.
As for not having a 3.5mm jack, it actually makes sense why they don't have it. They give you an adapter which includes the 3.5mm jack and microphone. That way, if you get a call while listening to music, you don't need to pull off the headphones. I don't really know how else they would do it, if they just gave you a 3.5mm jack. Unless they expect you to pull off the headphones and then take the call. Or hold the phone up to your mouth, but still wear the headphones. It actually makes a lot of sense to include the adapter instead, if you think about it. Plus, it's got the button to advance to the play, pause, or double click to advance to the next song. That way, you can just keep the phone in your pocket when listening to music.
I was intending to just pawn off the phone and get an iphone, but since it came with a 30 day sim card, I decided to try it out, and I'm really glad I did. It's a great phone, and you should test it out before knocking it.
Just wanted to add my two cents. When I first saw this phone on the net, it really didn't look that great. Yes, it does have that image of looking like a cheap china toy.
It was not until it got released here in Hong Kong, that I actually saw it first hand, and held it, that I was actually impressed by the design and the build. The black version with the Maroon side border is one particularly nice looking phone.
Oh yea, and great curves ;-)
how do you hook up the my-touch to your mac??????
