iPhone OS 3.0 now available
Right on schedule, iPhone OS 3.0 is now available. Mash the update button in iTunes -- you need 8.2 -- and then check out our extensive iPhone 3G S review and iPhone OS 3.0 hub for all the nitty-gritty while you wait.

Blimey! What a fuss about not very much!!
iPhone firmware 3.0 is out finally. It is available for download. Activation servers have predictably been running at capacity causing some issues, but we've seen that persistence pays off (mine took about 8 attempts at 8:45pm BST).
The new firmware contains everything we read about for the past few months, no new surprises. Its all good and does what it says on the tin. Who could ask for more? There's enough in 3.0 to keep us going for quite a while, especially in those countries that get to have MMS from day one :) And the ability to re-join the viral distribution of tasteless jokes via SMS is a distinct pleasure.
Now to start working my way through the 100 improvements :D
113 improvements, unless you're good at compiling... which Apple obviously isn't when showing off...

Impossible to get thru now :(
I have an officially unlocked phone from Australia and am using it on Orange in the UK - is anyone else in a similar situation? How has the update gone?
Thanks in advance.
Mike,
My father is over visiting - exactly the same thing (although O2 SIM) and it all went fine.
Uh, I need a working iPod touch OS X 3.0 1st generation link please
SAM: Or anyone using Sam's direct download links:
How do you load the file into the phone once it's on your local computer?
Where's Meboo?
All updated here.
Likes = cut/copy/paste obviously, landscape Mail and Messages, individually deletable text messages.
Dislikes = Spotlight doesn't search address fields? WTF? Still can't edit the Calendar type of an event once it's created.
so whats up with picture messaging? i dont see a way to do it anywhere. or am i just a ritard?
AT&T really makes me mad. They still want $600 for an iPhone on my plan. If AT&T has ever steered you astray, visit my site at www.iphoneont-mobile.com Make your voice heard.
I've gotta say im starting to feel like iPhones are over-rated.....
1. I had the whole "spotlight" search thing available over a year ago on my dusty sidekick lx
btw.... you CANT search through text messages with spotlight on Iphone
2. i could bluetooth songs from my pc to my razr [circa '06] but not on my iphone, not even via wifi
3. the wide screen keyword doesnt work for apps that need it, like aim & facebook
4. mms doesn't even work yet WTF
5. since i got a 3G in December I'm now screwed out of upgrading til a year and a half
6. every phone since the razr has had some kinda video record, but my iphone doesnt =[
7. tethering is pointless if at&t isnt gonna let me use w/o raping me with data fees
8. a voice recorder....... WTF r u kiddin me? the iTalk app has been doing this for close to a year, make a web cam app that would be original.
9. I sure as hell won't be able to locate my lost iphone, because MobileMe is $100 a year
10. i can voice search the web via Google mobile app, but apple won't let me voice search with a regular 3G
11. the calendar and email still looks ugly and will continue to turn off business users
bottom OS 3.0 = iPhone catching up with features other phones have had since the RAZR
I am not paying for no ipod update .
I bought a 3G (8GB) which I should be getting tomorrow. Hopefully 3.0 will already be installed on it.
Updating to 3.0 didn't mess up my custom carrier logo!
I had to retry for about 35 minutes before the activation went through. ( why don't they just check your activation before they start the update and store the code locally)? This was a lot smoother than the 2.2 update. I had to wait about 2.5 hours back then.
Isn't it bad when 35 minutes to activate seems good????!!!
3.0 is sucking my life away - downloaded & then updated no problem... but now my iPhone 3G is sssslllllllllooooooooowwwwwwww as all get out.... unusable... I've turned it on/off several times but not helping...
And that's why you torrent it =p
Forwarding sms how I have missed you !
Cut Copy Paste should never have taken this long!
and MMS - finally ! yay
Seems pretty crappy that as a 1st gen Touch user that you have to pay for this update. Most of the features do not even work for it. I had to download it though to get live streaming for the MLB At Bat app. Watched the Dodgers-Oakland game on it last night. Pretty darn decent quality, looking forward to seeing some more games.
An intelligently developed OS, I love it!
In addition to the "We could not complete your iTunes Store Request. An unknown error occured (-4)." I am also suffering from a phone locked in a ‘connect to iTunes’ message, only allowing emergency calls. It may be due to the PIN lock on my phone, but I can't be sure. My phone is completely jammed. I can not find a way to reset the phone and I can not get to the PIN screen to unlock the phone. iTunes can't 'talk' to the iPhone whilst it is locked. In fact, iTunes doesn't even 'see' my iPhone in the devices list any more. A very annoying oversight in the installation process????
I now have to find time to go in to Apple to get it fixed. The phones been a brick for 24 hours. Thanks Apple. Who compensates me for the time wasted doing multiple on/offs of the iPhone and iTunes, searching for support on the web, finding another mobile to use and whinging in a forum. Oh and yes, as mentioned above, finding the time to get to a store to get it fixed!
Great customer service and feel good ads - which they need - when so much of the cutting edge hardware they produce needs follow-up care. BTW, my IBM/Lenovo laptop is not as groovy, but it's bullet proof.
Have you tried re-building it using the DFU mode? Try first to create it as a new iPhone and not restore from a backup. If that works, then restore from backup after you've got the 3.0 firmware installed and working.
There is always a way to bring these back to life if an update goes wrong. You just need to google around for the methods to use.
Further to my above comment - and after even more time spent trying to unlock the phone, I suspect that although the display is locked in 'connect to iTunes' mode, it might still be working underneath via WLAN. I think it is still alerting me when it receives and email or on a calendar reminder, but it still doesn't change the fact the phone can't be unlocked and can't be recognised by iTunes.
updated first thing this morning, all worked a treat :) activated in a minute or so
immense disappointment as it would seem there are differences between the version 3 on 8gb version of iphone and the 16/32gb iphone.
I think I've been ripped off here
You should have known that. It's been widely reported. Even 3g iphone owners will not get all the features such as voice control like the 3gs users.
My update went perfect, and took about 15 minutes total. All of these new features reminds me of the first (and second) time I jailbroke my phone, except everything runs soooooooo much faster.
Best wishes to all of you with iBricks right now... I'd say I'll copy and paste something in your honor, but I'm thinking I'd get down-voted for that...
To those with so-called "iBricks" - go read up on DFU and regain your iPhone. It isn't too difficult to do.
I love 3.0 but it would be way better if AT&T allowed MMS
Anybody feel like their batteries die faster after the upgrade? ive been running out until 0% ever since i updated it...
I just bought unlocking software from here.. http://www.iphoneunchain.com
Anyone tried yet?
Have yall read about the IPhone exploding? Its kinda scary... I will be following the news on my blog Exploding IPhone!
