T-Mobile Dash 3G now officially official, makes speedy arrival in July
Exactly as we heard, T-Mobile's managed to nab itself the Dash 3G, who while on the lam went by the pseudonyms Maple, S522, and even the Sprint-bound HTC Snap. The much prettier replacement to T-Mo's Dash is decked out with Windows Mobile 6.1, 802.11b/g WIFI, GPS, and red accents on its glossy black exterior. Not a dollar sign or price in sight, but without a doubt we'll be filling in that blank before its now-confirmed July release date.

WM? no thanks!
I'm going to trade in my iPhone for this... NOT!!!
Wow! You sir win the prize for originality and unpredictability!! Also, much respect for reading an article, scrolling down, clicking on "Add Comment", entering your Email and Password, writing a comment and clicking on "add comment" so we can all FINALLY know that you don't like Windows Mobile! You have SO much purpose! THANK YOU.
Imagine a world without iPhone. How would we have reacted to this new phone? We would all probably be as giddy as schoolgirls. This phone would probably be double the price at launch and everyone here would have willingly shelled out the money for it. Isn't competition great?
Imagine there's no iPhone.
It isn't hard to do.
No OS 3.0 or multitouch.
And no App Shop too...
Imagine all the commenters,
Posting about something else.
You may say I'm a whinger.
But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us.
And Engaget wont be full of endless iPhone comments no matter what the topic....
T-Mobile 3G is like unicorns. Some people believe it exists, but few actually saw it.
P.S. I wish there was a strong GSM competitor against AT&T. T-Mobile's 3G network is too small. If Verizon was GSM and didn't cripple their phones that would be something.
ok
WM 6.1 seems to enjoy the prestige of a random Linux-based feature phone OS.
I happen to live in a T-mobile 3g coverage area, so I have seen the unicorn!
I like it. Definetely pretty. Just not as gorgeous as my Palm Pre though. =D
After WebOS (aka, my Palm Pre), comes windows mobile, but yea ugly phone.
That is the UGLIEST phone I've ever seen.
your the ugliest poster I've never seen
Thats kinda stockerish
You should really avoid being too sexually attracted to your phones anyway... Based on your previous posts, I'd hate to think what might happen if you happen to be near an iphone with your pants down.
Girls > Phones
Hottest phone in the WURLD no homo.
can we just once get a phone in this form factor other than blackberries with a screen better than QVGA?
Palm used to make those
isn't the upcoming Eos going to fit that description?
Black and red? That sounds more like Verizon colors than T-Mobile, odd.
Hopefully T-Mobile doesn't start adding checkmarks to everything, then we'll have to look out...
Hey man, combine t-mobile's and verizon's high-end featurephones, add in verizon's network awesomeness and t-mobiles experience/service, and we have ourselves an AWESOME network!!!
so im just curious, is there a winmo standard 6.5?
I don't think so, I think there's only a touchscreen version of that one since most (possibly all) of the enhancements are for increased finger-touch friendliness.
I am also drawing this conclusion from the fact that there are no cooked 6.5 roms available for the original Dash over at Xda-Developers, who had 6.1 running on it probably an entire year before it officially released.
Windows mobile FTL. If this phone had Android, I'd approve.
This phone is quite ugly
*shudders*
How about this form factor with Android and higher resolution? I'm holding off on getting a smart phone, all you'd really have to do is release something like this with Android and a 3.5" jack. Goodness knows there's a market, since everyone seems to be buying Blackberries, even with (IMHO) the poor build qualities and the wonky UI.
and its back to the drawing board if the comments are any indication....
This looks pretty good, actually! You get a great keyboard, trackball, WM (6.1 is decent, I think), 3G AND wi-fi, and t-mob! Prettaaay, prettaaay, prettay good.
CHROME WON'T SAVE MY COMMENT REGULARLY PASSWORD THIS IS DRIVING ME CRIZZAY!!!
If you keep using it, it will eventually ask you if you want it to remember your password. It took me about a month for Engadget. It's incredibly annoying.
Just ask Google, they now have all your info anyway.
This phone looks like something that should have been on sale 2-3 years ago -- not a "hot new release" I suppose if it's free with contract it's a better alternative to a dinky non-QWERTY flip phone.
What did they do to the Start menu/task bar? Where's the close button going to be?
Holy shit that phone is ugly
This looks like a perfect upgrade for my T-mobile Dash.
I see nothing wrong with the phone itself , but no way people will choose this over a blackberry , or Nokia, unless it has a low pricepoint
Sexy, I have the current Dash (not so sexy).
That is one ugly piece of shit.
Black and red, seriously?
Could of left the red off the keys. My current dash is all scratched up, To upgrade or not? That is a good question. I think not. Black and red usually is cool but looks nasty on the 3g dash so I say no....P.S. The trackball makes it look like a wanna be blackberry
Looks nice!
Don't like the red, I miss the cool blue LED backlighting that my current Dash has.
unfortunately Tmob is about a year or two behind on refreshing that POS dash. They lost so many customers with that POS. After suffering with one for the longest time... trying different roms to keep it from freezing or coming to a crawl after 3-4 hours of use. The screens turning purple randomly. The list goes on and on so I gave up. Finally when Tmob told me I wouldn't qualify for a G1 at "upgrade" price but she'd cut me a break and let me get one at $395. What a deal!! I just went and got a Iphone for $200. Took my business with me.
I like the design of the older Dash much better. Hopefully this one will come with a 6.5 upgrade and maybe even a Windows Mobile 7 upgrade.
Who'd buy 6.1 now?
another abomination courtesy of htc.
t-mobile tells htc what they want and htc takes the money and makes it
i guess all the touch pros, touch hd's, and touch diamonds are so horrible. who would ever buy an htc, uhh $4.61 billion dollars worth of people dumbass
http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/htc-posts-4-61-billion-sales-2008/2009-01-08
Just used one today at an htc meeting. I was quite impressed. If you've yet to see the actual interface and how it's used(NOT the normal windows standard mobile) I would refrain from judgement....I mean, unless you want to make fun of the ugly colors over and over like little 12 year old bitch girls.
Could be worse, could be gizmodo where uninformed posters uniformly love apple crapware
@milkbone98 @ Jun 18th 2009 12:00AM
ha ha
oh wow
"uninformed posters uniformly love apple crapware"
is correct here too, although sans the 'uniformly'
LOL I mean I have a Palm Pre. Its amazing. The Iphone is a great phone and blackberry is very functional. Also I am not an Android Fan but people like it as well. Why is anyone buying a WM or sybian powered phone?
What I listed should be the only 4 types of phones being considered. Anything else being purchased is just because your company forced you to have it for security reasons or you are dumber than dirt.
HOARK! That's the sound of me puking all over the screen. HTC should know better than this! Actually... they do.
My dad has the first gen dash and, wow, it is the slowest, buggiest piece of shit I have ever seen.
Tell him to head over to xda-developers and install a cooked 6.1 Rom on it. That phone becomes ridiculously awesome once you get some decent firmware on it. I got rid of mine for a G1 a while ago, but man did I love it while I had it.
Decked out with WM 6.1? Ugh. I will never use that shit OS again.
"T-Mobile 3G is like unicorns. Some people believe it exists, but few actually saw it."
That is some funny shit!!
So SloMo, I mean CrashMo, I mean WinMo, after all these years of development and god knows how much money, has succeeded in becoming the OS you put on your cheapest shittiest "smart" phone. Heck of a job Microsoft.
Ugly Fail?
I have been seeing ads and conversation all over the web for this new HTC Dash windows mobile phone. I am more into the high-end smartphones, but I can see where people that just want to text and email a lot how this would be very appealing to them.
all you idiots licking the sweat off apple's proverbial balls, why dont you try not to compare the iphone to mobile devices not in the same category.
my iphone is better then a nokia 6010
sidekicks dont do what my iphone does
i can was clothes with my iphone while it ties my sneakers
shut the fuck up already and get some pussy, i know your iphone is
I've been waiting for the following things to come together for about 5 years:
Cellphone + High-speed internet + Tethering + (because I've used them for 6 years) T-mobile...
The Dash 3G is simply the first phone in history to actually do these things... I'm not down with the wired USB / proxy server G1 hack... It's kludgy as heck... T-mobile actually blessed my use of tethering with the Dash, and though it's not as simple as it could be, all the carrier specific info has been pre-configured in the phone by T-mo! (Really, I was *shocked*)
Bonuses? Windows Mobile (Because it interfaces with all my business software and there are gagillions of apps for it), Bluetooth 2.0 (So the tethering is wireless, and I can get stuff in and out easily) AGPS (Because I get lost sometimes...), Expandable memory and replaceable battery ('Cuz duh), and IT'S NOT AN APPLE PRODUCT (Because Apple is a cult for rich, coddled fashion victims)
Since I don't leave the Northeast US particularly often, and when I do I go to Germany usually, the German owned GSM equipped, relatively cheap T-mobile is great for me. Because I have locked in old plans that don't exist any more, I get:
1000 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, 500 txts and *unlimited data* and discounted international calling for a cool $70/month... Beat that Verizon...
I got my Dash 3G the moment it came out, and I'm happy with the look and feel of the phone, and the camera is even serviceable... I'm definitely not a WM6.1 fanboy, and I do feel that the interface, even with the HTC enhancements is pretty unintuitive, even for a guy like me that's been using Windows Mobile in a PDA since it was called CE, and the Pentium II was an innovative new product... However I can use Skype Mobile very easily, and update with my Exchange Server just as easily as my Gmail.
But here's an anecdote that makes me tingle just to share with you good people:
I hopped on an elevated subway in New Your City yesterday with my Dash 3G in my pocket and my (bluetooth enabled) netbook in my lap... I initiated my connection, and spent the 30 minute subway ride streaming MP3s from my home file server, while at the same time surfing the web, and at one point checking in to a client's server in New Jersey with Remote Desktop Client (which behaved responsively), and the connection only dropped out very briefly once, and recovered gracefully a second later... Occasional Speakeasy Speed Test checks with the New York City server confirmed a steady 900Kb/s down and 300Kb/s up throughout the journey, at speed, in a metal box...
I'm thrilled, truly thrilled...
One more caveat: The standard smartphone + 3G power consumption issues are definitely present in this phone. It's got a nice big battery, but a full day is a stretch if you do a lot of crazy tethered frolicking like in my example above... Luckily if you're tethered you could always mooch some power from your laptop...
we_are_the_borg
Excellent report.
I appreciate your forthcoming statements about the battery/power problem being still ever-present.
I will be upgrading my 1st gen Dash to Dash 3G as soon as TMo drops the price to the $100 to $120 level on a 2 year upgrade. Until then I'll suffer with some of the few flaws that exist with the original Dash.
For me, my #1 function is listening to streaming internet radio connected to the car stereo aux 3.5 port via a homemade mini-USB to 3.5mm cable. I am waiting for the Y adapter so I can charge the phone as I listen to internet audio. Right now..I get about 30 minutes (if I'm lucky) before it powers down.
