Apple unleashes iPhone 3G S on well-prepared US public (with video!)
As the international date line swung around to the States and rain finally stopped in NY, a few hundred people lined up outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store today for Apple's new iPhone, with the those The iLife guys up front descending into the store at 7AM to the sound of applause from the cheery horde of Apple Store employees. It was a far sight from the mayhem of previous launches -- the whole line was able to be contained in the elevated portion to the right of the store, no sidewalk necessary -- but it was still a fairly impressive turnout for a spec-bumped phone and a rainy night. Stand by for video from the launch, and be sure to send in your own launch impressions.
Update: Video is after the break!
Update: Video is after the break!

Yay! Another day, another 50 articles on the iPhone. I realize that the new one is coming out today but you've done at least 5 articles a day for the past week and a half. I mean beyond an intro to the specs, a review of the phone and a comparison of the phone to other phones, how do you seriously have that much to write about?
its D-Bag day every day here on Enga. ^_^
People should understand that the new iPhone is not at all worth the money. Please i would request all people to stay away from it.
Engadget are Apple whores. What do you expect?
People should not buy this iPhone and prove apple that they are not moving a single step without good innovation.
It's simple: Avoid Engadget and Gizmodo during Apple season.
Maybe less clicks will open their eyes.
Fewer clicks.

Engadget REALLY seems as though they work for Apple, they are like a gorilla marketing blog. The N97 was formally released this week and they didn't report on it at all. While the iphone is cool, the coverage is plain biased and ridiculous.
Engadget, please stop adding trivial updates to your Apple stories and then using that as an excuse to move the story back up to the top of the page. There are enough people telling you that they don't think this story should have appeared at all without it moving back up to first place.
is it that hard to just scroll down past the apple news and avoid it or are you constantly refreshing engadget.com every 5 minutes and getting annoyed when its an apple news?
did you know that engadget gets free apple gear when it comes out?
jakem, it's in their contract.
You haters are the stupid ones. Why click on an article about apple and then proceed to comment on said article about how Engadget sucks so much and are apples bitch? If you don't like it, beat it dudes!
The trolls comment because they know it causes flame wars. THey are either at home on disability on their Windoze 98 machines haitng that people can afford new technology. Or, they are at their office surfing the internet waiting to see if they get laid off and want to be passive aggressive towards people/products/puppies.
I guess I don't see what is so difficult about just scrolling past the article if it bothers you so much. But no, you actually took time to click the link AND post a comment. Heck, add if you just viewed the RSS feed you wouldn't even need to scroll past the story blurb. It baffles me how some people can get so worked up over the number of stories a tech web site writes about one of the biggest tech companies in the US.
Look, he's doin the D-bag walk, Apple's version of the Perp walk, and from the looks of it he's been practicing, you go with your bad self!
First off, I actually like the iPhone. It has a UI thats just unmatched. It was very well programmed and its sleek looking. My girlfriend has one and she loves it because its just really intuitive to use.
My beef is that, these articles need not be written or at least be limited to engadget mobile. I would be okay with it if they covered other smartphones with the same passion that do the iPhone. For example, the N97 came out last week. Engadget mobile had an unboxing article on it with a promise of a review to come: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/06/09/nokia-n97-nam-unboxing/
Its been a week and a half and still no review. The iPhone 3Gs came out today. They were able to post their review up two days ago.
Engadget needs to run a new poll since the smartphone wars have heated up.
If you could buy a phone today, regardless of carrier, what would it be?
iPhone 3GS
Palm Pre
Nokia N97
T-Mobile G1
BB Storm
Windows Mobile Device
I love my Razr!
My personal prediction is >50% will be 3GS, which is why Engadget whores itself out for the iPhone. Fanbois are blind to the fact that the iPhone is nothing special with an apple on it, much like the rest of their products.
So much hate here. Of course Engadget is going to cover it. It's a huge story and people love to hear about it. You commented, right?
STFU FTW
@ JC
The problem is that all those phones you listed below the iPhone all have something wrong with them, whether it's crap interface, non-existent or poor application store, terrible clicky screen, bulky design, etc etc. You can do a mix and match game with those faults and phones above.
The reason the iPhone works so well, and is so popular, is that despite these limitations which haterz always bang on about, and which no one really uses much (MMS - yes, that's been a global massive success hasn't it, cut and paste - come on, I can't think of a single time I'd have used that), it all just works. It's got a smooth good looking interface which works, a good application store, etc. There's nothing to really hate about it, other than if you are a) anti-Apple in general, or b) put off by hype.
Do some of you people have some sort of motor control problems? All you have to do is not click on the headline and you don't have to read the article. I understand the hate of people that can't afford Apple products, but do you hate everyone that has more than you. These people with iPhones are happy that they have the number one smartphone in the world. Who can blame them. Sorry for the people that got stuck with their lemon non-Apple handsets. Better luck next time and in your next life. In Manhattan and Queens, Apple iPhones and iPods rule.
On the radio, they keep talking about the new iPhone and people buying them. When the Pre was first on sale, it wasn't even mentioned. Any reporter worth their salt would cover what's interesting news. The iPhone is news. More important than N. Korea launching a missile to Hawaii. They'll probably fail like Microsoft failed with Vista.
It's not just engadget, the coverage is everywhere. Don't be jealous just because noboby likes your phone.
She may be a pig, but you love her and that's what matters!
@TimmyRaa: So when my iPhone goes into a endless loop checking mail and drains my battery instantly and the only way to stop it is to restart the phone, it just works?
So when my iPhone keeps telling me there are updates to apps but hey guess what, I've already got the updates, it just works?
So when my iPhone sits there forever trying to determine my location in the middle of a city while outside, it just works?
So when my iPhone doesn't allow me to unlock it because it doesn't detect the swiping motion of the unlock slider, it just works?
So when my iPhone can't look at webpages because it will not run flash which MANY websites use, it just works?
So when my iPhone can't be turned on because it hasn't been charged in a day and the battery is of course dead, it just works?
The iPhone has MANY problems with it, don't kid yourself. I'm not saying it's a bad phone, I'm saying it's not perfect. Get off the Apple crack. These problems are not just localized to my phone, look around on the Internet and you will see MANY people have these same problems.
@ shaunisadirty
Okay, so you've had issues with yours, but most people don't. Also, those are all issues which can happen with any modern phone, be it the Pre, Storm, G1, etc. Listing issues such as those and slating the phone because of it is like branding OSX a complete joke because it once had a kernel panic on me, or Windows is shit because it bluescreened on me in 2007, or how Mercedes are terrible cars because mine ran out of fuel last year.
"Also, those are all issues which can happen with any modern phone, be it the Pre, Storm, G1, etc."
I should add, can and DO happen on any modern phone.
This will be they're downfall (as far as respect is concerned). Shame I've been a reader for years. I used to read Gizmodo until they started overdoing it with the apple shilling. This site used to have stories about robots and future tech as the bulk of it's posts now it's gone the way of the whore.
think engadgets bad? Jesus Diaz from gizmodo's worse...
How bad? I'm waiting for that day to see him walking around in NYC so I could punch him in the face
Timmy...did you even read the last paragraph?
"The iPhone has MANY problems with it, don't kid yourself. I'm not saying it's a bad phone, I'm saying it's not perfect. Get off the Apple crack. These problems are not just localized to my phone, look around on the Internet and you will see MANY people have these same problems.""
You make it sound as if the iPhone "just works" but then when I give you a list of examples of issues with the phone you dismiss them and start comparing them to issues with operating systems? Keep believing it is the perfect phone without problems if you want, but it's not. Most people have had these issues with their phones..most people are not blind fanbois like you appear to be..and most people are not going to come here to post about their issues, they just get on with their life because they know in the end it's a phone.
I find it funny how before the iPhone nobody even thought about an application store or cared about it, now all the Apple fans keep ranting about how other phones don't have it? Do you really use the app store that much? Does it really change your life that much? If it does, I feel sorry for you. I look through the app store on my iPhone and I see fart app upon fart app and more stupid little things that make me say, wtf? Why do people keep paying for these crappy apps?
shaunisadirty's list is pretty spot on. I love my iPhone and all, but it sure as hell isn't perfect.
Besides that, all of the haters who come in here and just bitch and moan over coverage of a phone they don't have or want need to relax and hit the other stories that cover tech they are interested in. Coming in each iPhone story and crying because you don't think it deserves attention is just stupid. You may not like the phone but millions do, therefore it deserves the attention that the userbase drives.
Christ, it's not like the iPhone is responsible for mass murders and child stealing, its a damn phone. Let people use it without your incessant whining.
The irony of it all? This Apple story that everyone is complaining about has by far the most comments and I'm sure the most clicks. So keep on complaining Haters, you're only ensuring that the coverage continues.
wa wa wa, engadget conspirace theory, wa wa wa, nokia n97, wa wa wa, MS, wawaa. Fucking whiny little baby girls all of you morons. don't CLICK THE ARTICLE idiots, go check every other tech blog on the Internet, EVER SINGLE ONE IS COVERING THIS PHONE, you know, because people give a shit about it. Nobody gives a shit about your nokia, get over it. Even your dumb ass MS blogs are covering this phone. STFU and move on.
Oh but the nokia is the best selling phone, blah blah blah, if anyone gave 2 shits it would be all over all the tech blogs and its not, cause it’s a 700 dollar piece of shit. Tech blogs cover apple news because people care to read apple news, look at both of the smart phone polls and gizmodo and engadget, both are >50% iphone.
It's not the phone that people have a problem with. Its the Apple nut jobs. They are everywhere and obnoxious. People don't want to bust on the phone they want to hassle the fan base.
I think a lot of phones are good, and if I had not gotten this Pre I would probably have been happy with an Android phone or a Nokia.
I think the iPhone is okay I just don't want to "jailbreak" a phone to get it to do those extra things.
The fanbois of Apple are just irritating. It is very cult like and creepy and obnoxious.
I mean I know its just a phone or a laptop, or an mp3player, its thopse other fuckwits that talk about it like everything else everyone owns is inferior.
Who wants to hear from these morons that even though your Nokia N97 can do a hundred more things than the iPhone, it is still inferior.
Why? Because the iPhone "just works." What a load of horseshit.
No these Apple fanatics made their bed and need to sleep in it.
GlammaJamma: Agreed. Enough said.
Why all the hate? The site does stories on tech stuff and consumer electronics. In case you didn't notice the iPhone is a consumer electronic. And it happens to be a pretty big news story.
When the Pre was ramping up for launch there was just as many stories about the Pre everywhere. The same with the G1, the same with the PS3, Wii, Xbox 360. You see a pattern there? They were pretty big news stories so they received more coverage. And the more places you search around for news, the more iPhone stories your going to run into today.
Some of you guys whine more then my GF's whiney, bratty kids do.
And who wants a site filled with robots and future tech. I can't buy either of them. Some stories on it is fine, more then a handfull and you've transformed from reading a news site to reading an outline for a sci-fi novel.
I hate apple fanboys and all the hype but you know what? I'm sick of all this bitching from engadget readers. Engadgets coverage really isnt that bad or biased and, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, Apple has a huge following and obviously massive support as demonstrated by this very article. There's a demand for coverage so it's being given. Quit taking this so seriously and simply scroll past the apple articles if they dont look interesting and you dont want to read them... that's what I normally do.
iPhone = money. And not just for Apple and AT&T. They're merely satisfying the public's need. Look at it this way. On Google when someone types iPhone (these are random ass people too) if you put out more articles the higher the chance Engadget is gonna be on top.
Now some of you Apple fans, instead of point fingers and shouting troll or hater, need start pointing fingers at your fellow Apple fans like:
Paul A. Chapel
P.A.C. Man
Jubeil
iPhonerulez
iKirk Mark5
And many others, that routinely go to non-Apple stories and do the same stuff. Please dont lie and say they dont.
They pretty much invite this backlash.
"...how do you seriously have that much to write about?"
Wake up and smell the Starbucks friend, because quite frankly in spite of the massive efforts of companies such as RIM, Palm, Nokia, Sony, Dell, Microsoft, Palm, Samsung, HTC, Google and countless others to glean a bit of Apple's mojo, no one gives a F*UCK about these companies. They could all drop off the earth tomorrow and people wouldn't give two SH*TS!
Do they make good products? Meh. More importantly, who cares.
Have any of the companies above taken a tremendous chance and actually accomplished something great?
The answer is no.
Apple has scored four times. The original Macintosh. The Newton. NextSTEP & OS X. The iPhone.
Sure, the Newton was a failure. But they took a chance and built it, setting the stage for the Palm Pilot, which got it right.
Don't like it. STFU, build your own company, lose the company, return for a $1, change the world, and get back to us.
Interesting that the iPhone 3G S launch looks like such a great place for men to pick up men.
Oh, look at that, Look_Around_You must be mad because I called him a boring troll. Dude, even though you have me on your list, you're still boring. You can't get any of my cool just by saying my name.
So why the hell are you all on this blog. Just to pick a fight? You Apple haters are priceless. Go back and take a look at the amount of Palm Pre coverage over the past month, up until lately it is all I saw on this friggin site. But here's what I did, I skipped past them and moved on. So do us all a favor, get off of this page if you are only going to talk sh*t! Oh and have fun ripping this post apart too! Thats always fun to read! Oh you Apple haters, you're fun people!
bit annoying if you just needed to pop in for a printer cable...
What's that Lassie?
The trolls have put out their "Engadget loves Apple bait" again...?
Boy, that Timmy never learns...
Haii guys,
can someone tell me how to cook waffles?
I think Bart Simpson pretty much summed it up, "You think you are cool just because you bought a $500 phone? They cause 8 bucks to me and i pee on every one!"
Here's a tip - Washington DC area residents and visitors should check out Shoofa DC - it's an iPhone app that gives you location based access to sweet deals at restaurants and bars, like 50% off meals.
spelling FAIL
Look at those people overpaying on an overrated phone.
Omg look what the iPhone Apple people invented today, they call it Copy and Paste! They also just innovated the way you send text messages by allowing you to send a picture from phone to phone!! I also heard theyre gonna do the unthinkable in the next release by allowing you to run 2 programs at the same time!! oomgg what would we do without the apples?!
@UnofficialPants got you pegged with the fact that you skipped the N97 launch almost completely. The flagship phone from the biggest phone manufacturer in the world, nah, thats not really news worthy! Theres a reason we all have accounts here instead of AppleInsider.com, we are passionate about gadgets from all manuifacturerrs and it sucks to see this blog so in hte tank for one comapny. A company that makes damned good product, but please,
@shaunisadirty --- nice, I've had those exact issues with my iPod touch. It just works!
@bombgigitty --- dead on. I uset to read gizmodo, but it went the way of the apple fanboy and I never go there anymore. Engadget really used to be a fair site, but now its so clearly in the tank for Apple.
