iPhone 3GS gets the quick and dirty tear apart treatment, already (update: could do 833MHz and 720p video)

Well that was fast. Orange Boutique in Paris, France did a midnight release of the iPhone 3G S, and the gang at Rapid Repair were there to pick one up and subsequently rip their new toy to shreds. There isn't much here in terms of analysis of parts yet, it's more so just a quick and dirty job to get it out to the world, but hey, if you're into watching someone rip apart brand new, expensive gadgetry, we've got just the gallery for you.

Update: They've identified the chipset as the SoC S5PC100 from Samsung and thus confirm an ARM Cortex A8 running at 600 MHz (operates at up to 833MHz though) and the ability to record 720p video and handle real-time video conferencing should Apple choose to go in that direction (iPhone 3G S records VGA only). PowerVR SGX graphics and 256MB of RAM too as expected. S5PC100 block diagram after the break.

As the sales numbers for the iPhone consistently bear out, not everybody is a spec whore like you are. The iPhone works, and it works very well. Usability is through the roof, and believe it or not, THAT is what most people care about. Bitch and whine all you want, but Apple has a better sense of what people actually want than you do, obviously.

i love all the people saying that Apple released a phone just to battle the Pre. Wasn't the Pre announced at CES in January? Are you telling me Apple can completely redesign a phone and get it produced and released in about 5 months? That's amazing turnaround.

Not to mention they have a history of releasing an updated phone every June.

Maybe Palm released the Pre to stifle iPhone sales? That seems more likely. Palm would have been better off releasing the phone in the fall, for back-to school. No one is thinking about iPhones then.

3G was a wasted upgrade because you just got 3G, but this 3Gs is a huge upgrade. New 833 MHz processor, double the RAM, double the memory, and a new graphics chip!!!!

You mean new 600 MHz processor. And don't forget the new autofocus camera.

Maybe Apple will get a clue next year and release a front facing video-conferencing camera and update the rear with decent lens for some zoom and flash. MP can stay where they are though... No need for useless 8MP cameras with shitty lenses like those Samsungs and SEs.
