Is that the actual font on the Pre? That is nice.
sweet greggo @ Jun 19th 2009 4:41PM
Yup, that's it. The screen is VERY nice.
donatom3 @ Jun 19th 2009 4:44PM
That indeed is a screen shot of the phone. It lets you take screen shots by pressing Orange + Sym + P.
Kevin @ Jun 19th 2009 4:47PM
My gf has the Palm Pre - the fonts are definitely very elegant and easy to read.

There's the info for the update.
Dillinger @ Jun 19th 2009 5:42PM
The whole UI in general is very nice, even the accuweather app, which when i first got it for the iphone you could tell they shoved it out the door, its nice looking now, but V1 on the Pre is really really nice.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Jun 19th 2009 5:42PM
Yeah there was a whole article a week or so ago about the Pre fonts. Can't remember the upshot.. I think it was about the company that designed it?
General_Trelane, (retired) @ Jun 19th 2009 5:44PM
Yes, she IS definitely easy and elegant. yum yum oh yes...
OneLove @ Jun 19th 2009 6:40PM
- Removed itunes support. What!?
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Jun 19th 2009 6:43PM
WOW that was a long list of things you dislike about the Pre. It was too long for me to even bother reading. It must have been even more painful to come up with in the first place.
MarkCohen @ Jun 19th 2009 6:50PM
@boblobb
This is in order of what the Pre is "lacking" part:
8GB is small, fair enough

Not true, it's small because it's less than 2 weeks old

Wrong, synchs with iTunes, so it does get Podcasts

Matter of opinion, I like the screen size, but it's the same pixel density, so higher res

LOL still better than no keyboard (again, opinion)

I find Sprint more reliable, plus no insane amount of iPhone congestion
WiFi is free in most places anyway, again, don't really need it much with a reliable faster network anyway
See above
And again
Yet/Be responsible, sorry that Palm doesn't pander to idiot kids

iPhone's isn't the best either
Meh, I rarely turn it off to begin with
And the iPhone's isn't? LOL
Meh
Um...wrong

SO? Telenav makes that irrelevant
Sorry, our home screen is too busy keeping track of our multiple apps...
So? Kinda proves my point about your target audience

Why is the same message being posted on every Pre story?
This isn't Digg ya know.
Phoenix @ Jun 19th 2009 8:27PM
The iPhone can't output 720p. the HARDWARE could, but the capability isn't being used.
Kerber @ Jun 20th 2009 12:38AM
@boblobb
FIrst, I don't own either phone, but they both seem pretty cool.
Second, listing every last gimmicky feature that one phone is lacking is a bit silly. Some people think that certain features are more important than others.
For example, some people really need to have a physical keyboard and the ability to multitask, so for them the iPhone is not an option.
Other people may prioritize a larger screen (same RES, lower DENSITY MarkCohen) for watching videos, so the Pre isn't as suited for their needs.
I mean, my crappy old phone does MMS messaging, which I never use, but I don't think it's better than the iPhone. And my crappy old phone can also voice dial, which I never used after the novelty wore off, but I don't think it's better than the Pre.
I say that, despite your list, the Pre IS a better phone for some people. And we should all be happy that other companies are willing to cater to the Un-Apple demographic, because Apple is obviously content to rake in money from the same enormous group of people year after year.
sweet greggo @ Jun 19th 2009 4:37PM
omg!
skyblaze @ Jun 19th 2009 4:36PM
whooosh.. lucky pre owners... who knows when a symbian update'll come for our n97s :\
DirtyVegas @ Jun 19th 2009 5:43PM
boobs - I concur.
Cy Starkman @ Jun 19th 2009 6:21PM
Well... probably never if the decade long experience With nokia et al is anything to go by.
It's the most awesome thing now that palm, apple and google are fighting them in the trenches. Actual updates and bug fixes without having to wait for the next model of the phone. It's genius!
va jj @ Jun 19th 2009 6:36PM
next week.
Gi @ Jun 19th 2009 4:39PM
I hada feeling there would be....speed brain updated this morning
sweet greggo @ Jun 19th 2009 4:40PM
Half a dozens apps have updated the last few days. I kinda figured this was coming soon too.
wnr @ Jun 19th 2009 10:56PM
Interestingly, the updates causes motion app's classic emulator to BSOD. So in effect this update knocked out support for the older Palm OS apps. hope they fix this soon.
Keith Myers @ Jun 19th 2009 4:39PM
Updating Now, Will report any new features
pratik @ Jun 20th 2009 5:20AM
Clock
If you create a weekday alarm on a weekend, the alarm sounds only on weekdays. Previously the alarm would sound on the weekend also.
TRY THIS ! its saturday :D
Flaystus @ Jun 19th 2009 4:39PM
You know if their phones do live updates its gonna make Apples threat of taking sync ability with itunes away VERY difficult.
Poo_and_Wee @ Jun 19th 2009 4:40PM
You assume pre devs will be able to code around whatever security Apple implements.
Flaystus @ Jun 19th 2009 4:42PM
If they change it to much to fast their own older plays will stop working without constant updates also.
Cameron @ Jun 19th 2009 4:46PM
You should know by now that where there's a will, there's a way. See iPhone Dev Team as an example. When companies enforce stupid restrictions, expect resourceful, determined individuals to find ways around the roadblocks -- the more insurmountable-seeming the obstacles, the greater the determination.
Ryan @ Jun 19th 2009 5:07PM
and knowing that Palm's CEO lead the iPod team for years, and he knows itunes like the back of his hand, im sure it will be syncable for a long long time.
Tom @ Jun 19th 2009 6:38PM
Theres a big difference between the iPhone Dev Team and Palm. Palm is a company, large enough to piss off Apple enough to really play dirty. At some point if Apple really wants to kill the Pre iTunes syncing, they will stop assigning engineers, and instead assign lawyers to fix the issue.
Ultimately, the knowledge base article is more about Apple covering their end. They don't want people crying to them if iTunes 8.3 breaks Pre syncing, even if the breaking was unintentional. Nor do they want people crying to them if the Pre update 1.1.0 or whatever breaks it.
Fir3lord @ Jun 19th 2009 4:40PM
what does it update?
donatom3 @ Jun 19th 2009 4:44PM
So far the two apps that show a new version number are the Phone app and clock app. If the Phone app controls the radio I would assume that's what the change is.
Cycomachead @ Jun 19th 2009 8:44PM
Well, there the list. And I think a big thing is the sync time was reduced from hours to 15 min. (WTF? it was hours before??? damn that made no sense, but I don't own a Pre)
Palm oddly decided to state that change about 6 times (twice per app)...
Drew Miller @ Jun 19th 2009 4:40PM
Sweet - also downloading it now, over the air. I love this phone.
Anthony M. @ Jun 19th 2009 4:40PM
I find the simplicity of just saying iPhone in a Pre post hilarious.
Despite the incoming downranks ;)
J D @ Jun 19th 2009 4:42PM
Installed, haven't been able to find anything new yet....
superhobo @ Jun 19th 2009 4:42PM
Presto! A prelude, a precentor presents a precocial predator, preserving the preponderance of its predecessors, precisely preengineered, prefocused on perfection, for preeminent personalities with predeveloped prefontal cortices. Predestined to preside and prevail with prestige.
Prejudiced pretentious prepubescent preservers of the presumably predominant precedent, once held precious, preconciously yet pressingly and persistently present premonitions, preconcieved predictions of its preclusion from the game. Precancel your preorders of the precancerous iPhone, promoter of petty prettification.
Presented to you in a pretty precession. You may call me Pre.
gonintendo @ Jun 19th 2009 4:49PM
Woah buddy, say it don't spray it.
