Nokia E72 prototype gets manhandled, torn asunder
If you stop to think, really, about how much we take pleasure in seeing pictures of phones get utterly dismembered, it's quite disturbing. So don't think about it, and instead hit up the read link for a gallery showcase copious amounts of a prototype Nokia E72 innards, ripped apart alongside an E71 (on the right in the image above) for comparative purposes. There's a very brief question-and-answer session just after the photos, but it's definitely not gonna keep you satisfied between now and its third quarter launch window.

When is this coming to stores again?

What does yoga have to do with Symbian?
i think word guru stands for that position in this case....
You'll certainly get backlashes for making a ridiculous comment about the world's dominant smartphone platform, but most of them will be for making homophobic comments like yours.
For the record, I'm a straight American who uses S60.
I also concede that they could stand to update the UI, but the OS is much more functional than Android, WinMo, and OS X mobile
> For the record, I'm a straight American who uses S60.
And, for the record, I'm a straight Briton who uses an LG proprietary OS with Adobe Flash UI.
The comment that I was replying to was deleted (making mine horribly out of context).
The parent comment said something to the effect that S60 and Nokia are only for European men that like sucking face with other men, which I had to point out was not the case
"Torn asunder"? What is this, a Protest the Hero album?
buttons look a little bit too low.
@Greg
Agreed. (about Nokia and S60). I have an E71 (and a Touch Pro, for the record) and although the hardware is the best I've ever held and the OS is extremely fast and fully-featured, it just doesn't have the fit and finish of a nice smooth new UI, and the way you move around it seems dated in general.
I soooo want to love using it more but the experience (while completely usable and very fast) just doesn't have a compelling feel that makes it sort of fun to use. Looks like Nokia might be moving to Maemo anyway. Its strange what they did with S60. Still on the hunt for the perfect device. Neither of my two current phones is it, nor does it exist in the current market!
It looks like the comment I replied to was deleted- whatever, probably a good thing.
I have an N82-1 (in the States) and will hopefully be picking up an N86 8MP in a few months.
I had an iPhone for quite awhile and got the N82 when mine was stolen and honestly, I did not like the N82 at all when I first got it, even though it was functionally superior to the iPhone.
After awhile, I got used to S60 and am totally in love with it. It may not be very pretty (though I am really digging the new icons and UI improvements that they've been making with FP2 and S60v5) but I really like its unique quirks and it can do pretty much anything under the sun.
I don't know, I guess I'm a Nokia / S60 fanboy
You should give the E71 some more face time- I have a friend who has one (though he'll have an N97 soon) and it is an amazing phone (though the E Series UI is different from the N Series UI)
I had a similar experience with my E71. I loved it when I got it, then I realized about 6 months later that I wasn't using it for much more than phone calls and google maps. During the past couple of weeks, I've been scouting for cool apps for it, and I've started to find lots of things that make the experience more compelling. The Ovi store is still kinda sparse, but there are some cool apps that are worth downloading.
@ctrlburn
Same here. I have had it for maybe 4 months or so now and go back and forth between it and the Touch Pro (which I got on release day in November) . I'm the same way - use it mostly for calls and Gmaps. Oh, and I love the built-in Podcasting app. I feel the same way on Ovi too, what a disappointment. Plus a lot of the apps are crappy. I saw an article from Matthew Miller somewhere the other day that he had to get a refund for an app that didn't work or something, and Nokia gave him a big headache and basically told him to go back to the app manufacturer (which goes against what Ovi and any app store is supposed to do).
@greg
I'm looking pretty closely at the N86 as well. The E75 looks compelling too, as does the E72. I actually think the E71 looks a little better than the E72 but thats just preference. The one thing though I noticed is the keys sit lower on the phone on the E72 which might throw the balance off a little when you're typing, something that the E71 excels at.
Funny thing is ,I'm still considering getting an iPhone too, just to get it out my system. I feel like a real gadget geek is sort of required to have at least owned what is arguably the most revolutionary phone device ever. Even if I only use it for a while ;) I think I'm skipping the N97.
Great to see they adopted that horrible E63-sized space key.
the keyboard is similar to that from the e63 touch wise - a matt finish over shiny. I like that the home/cal buttons etc are raised as fat fingers with no nails mean that i sometimes find it hard to hit them on the e71. Not sure on how the space bar will affect typing at speed
I finally figured out what was bothering me about the design. It has a shorter spacebar; which bugs me visually by a surprising amount.
Lets hope its an updated S60 and not the same old. Looks a little shorter/fatter. I wonder if the screen is bigger or higher res, that would be nice. I hate the unlock feature on my E71 its really fast
Sure, go ahead. S60 has been basically the same since it's introduction in 2001. New major visible features since then include support for themes, the active home screen and some front-ends for hardware features. They're not abandoning S60 in a while - even though they really should, I totally agree. But the UI compartment of Nokia is full of bored engineers in their 30s and 40s who have wives and maybe a few kids, Volvo and a house in Espoo... Don't expect miracles :)
It changed quite a bit to the better at the switch from S60 2nd edition to 3rd somewhere around 2006 and the UI looks nicer since then. But i must admit the concepts of the menus and the overall layout of things is still the same in 3rd and 5th as it was before. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, i'm used to using my phone's menus in the same way as on my S60 2nd phone from 2005 and everything just works as i expect it to. If they did a major overhaul of the UI it would either be a bit better or a complete disaster so i don't mind if they walk on the safe side for a bit longer.
Really, how is the concept of the S60 UI bad? Comparing it to one of the most flashiest OS', the iPhone:
You have the Active Standby screen on the S60, something you don't have on the iPhone.
When browsing for apps, you have the Menu screen which has icons arranged usually at a 3x4. You can organize these apps by putting them in folders, which works really well, while the iPhone has every single app there, in pages.
Really, there is nothing wrong with S60`s UI. It`s functional, and can be pleasing to the eye if you have the right theme. I have a Nokia N95 and I don`t really like the standard theme it comes in (mainly the icons since they`re a little dated) so I updated the theme to a user designed one which has the updated icons. I also have an app called Full Screen Wallpaper which lets me add a wallpaper that can be seen in any screen, instead of just the active standby screen, and that wallpaper im using is working great for me. My phone looks stylish and is very functional. Only thing my N95 is missing is some flashy menu transitions, which I think are present in the latest phones (might be wrong, not entirely sure).
They need to make it a little thicker and heavier.
Thats what the dildo focus group said.
Have you held an E71? It's got a pretty perfect weight (some may say it is a bit on the heavy side). I haven't read anything about the E72's weight
@Greg: Agreed - the E71 has just enough heft to make it feel rock solid.
The E71 is vastly sexier by a country mile.
I guess I'll have to keep waiting for a suitable replacement for mine; this E72 isn't really doing anything for me.
Another outdated crap from Nokia for the Eurotrash..
Well at least your voiced your opinion...
I do like my E71 and am hopeful for better OVI integration with the E72. If they would make the E72 around the same price point as the E71 when it came out that'd be pretty cool !!!
Exactly how is this outdated crap? My E71 is probably one of the best phones I've ever owned. And it does a hell of a lot more than almost every other phone on the market.
Another useless brain fart post, disparaging for no reason. nice one G.I.
I disagree, I currently own an e71 and whilst it is a solid phone (the best Nokia I have owned by far), it is certainly no Iphone. Apps for a start are what set the OSX apart, and when I was using the Iphone was what I enjoyed the most, was disappointed with the s60's lack of apps. The way I like to see it is that the Iphone's OSX has been built with functionality in mind and usability, whereas the s60 seems clunky and less intuitive. For example, compare the menu structure of the e71 to an iphone and you will see how more logical the iphone is structured.
Jared,
I have an iTouch and an e71. Hard for me really say which one is better. The e71 does everything I need it to, and looks good doing it. And it comes without the crippled, ass-gouging price point of ATT. I still use the Touch for browsing quite a bit around the house, but most of my apps honestly don't get used all that often. And typing is way way better on the e71 keyboard.
i think the best mobile OS is webOS! Mac OS of mobile is limited too much.
This phone looks really promising. Very nice looking, I wouldn't mind replacing my months-old E71 with this.

before going for a e72, u might want to have a look here..

Nokia still in business? If so, why?
Because not all people want a phone on contract, and not all people can justify paying upwards of 300$ on such a phone - no matter how "smart" it claims to be.
Nokia has some of the greatest low-cost smartphones out there, namely the Nokia E63 and the newly-introduced Nokia 5530. Both cost about 275$ off-contract.

What the bent comment system.
Stop this murder!!! Mobile phones have rights too... lol
OBSERVATORY FOR THE RIGHTS OF DIGITAL DEVICES
Instead of increasing the size of the button cluster, they should have added a dedicated number row. Though, it does look like a pretty design.
If they bumped up the screen resolution to something a little more Boldish I'd definitely consider upgrading my E71 because, IMO, the resolution is the E71's only really serious deficiency. Yeah, I miss some of the symbols on my keyboard and I'm glad they're back, although that space bar looks dangerously small. Yeah, I would like that 3.5mm headphone jack. Yeah I'd like the faster processor. Yeah, I'd like the new software. None of it, though, will compel me to upgrade whereas a higher resolution screen would have had me in a heartbeat.
