That iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak we saw the iPhone Dev-Team
pull off earlier this week? It's out now, or at least, part of it is. Pwnage Tool is now flooding torrents, but there's lots of caveats here. Most importantly, this isn't
Ultrasn0w, which means if you're wanting to use your toy on T-Mobile or another unofficial carrier, be patient -- it's also worth noting that the jailbreak doesn't jibe with yellowsn0w, so those who rely on it should stay away for the time being. No compatibility with the 3G S, or at least, it probably hasn't been tested... we wouldn't recommend anyone setting the precedent here. You'll need Mac OS X to run it, with QuickPwn for Mac and Windows coming further down the line. Ultrasn0w is also due out at some indeterminate future, so that all said, if you're just needing right now a jailbroken device with spotlight functionality, hit up the read link for all the pertinent details. It should goes without saying, but they're might a few negative side effects to it, and one of the big ones we heard is that YouTube might be fubar'd at the moment.

I'm using it on my iPod touch 2G and it's working perfectly.
I'm glad to be back.
did you use redsnow or pwnage tool 3.0 for your Ipod touch gen2?
Nobody else hoping they won't release until 3.0.1 comes out? Lots of annoying little bugs in 3.0 that I reckon will be (should be) patched up fairly soon. That'd be even more annoying.
I was having problems with Weather, Stocks, SBSettings and 5 Icon Dock. They all work perfectly now though. Not ran in to any bugs yet and it all seems a lot more stable than 2.2.
Nothing has crashed on me yet. Touch wood....
What's the major advantage in jailbreaking an iPod touch? I can understand the iPhone, but the touch? Don't make much sense to me. Explain.
@Paul: There are plenty of reasons to jailbreak that aren't directly related to iPhone-specific hardware. Cydia, Winterboard, live Clock and Weather icons, Emoji support outside of Japan, SBSettings (a customizable HUD with handy settings switches accessed by swiping across the status bar in any app or in the home screen), numerical status displays, customizable system fonts, clipboard functionality for pre-3.0 OSes, multitasking support (within the limits of available RAM, at least), unfettered access to the file system, a terminal, SSH and VNC...and that's not counting anything I haven't used on my own iPhone.
Thanks for that. I'm planning on buying either an iPhone 3G S or an iPod touch soon. I gotta wait for the new iPod touch though. I'm hoping that Apple puts in a 3G chip and allow touch owners to get a data plan only option. That way I could keep my little Samsung flip phone, which I feel is more convenient to carry around.
I've dropped my little flip phone several times and couldn't imagine dropping an iPhone even once, so the iPod touch looks like a much safer option.
@ Paul. 3G on a Touch? That would be the best of both worlds, which is why it will never happen. We can hope though.
Yeah, it would basically be an iPhone without the phone. Basically, you could use Safari, even when you're not in a Wi-Fi range. I know a lot of people who would buy that in a heart beat. There is also the possibility that you could use the 3G for VoIP calls. And AT&T could charge people $30 a month for the data plan.
But anyway, I agree with you, it's unlikely to happen because IT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE. And we know how the carriers like to screw ideas that make too much sense.
Have to agree that it would never happen - why would Apple want to encroach on iPhone sales by offering 3G functionality on the touch - doesn't make economic sense (unfortunately)
Uhh, 3G on a Touch would make it an iPhone without bluetooth or a mic, in terms of the hardware. You might as well just buy an iPhone off ebay and get a data-only plan.
Welcome to Thursday's news, Engadget.
I wonder when they plan on telling us that redsn0w has already been released on Windows and Mac for 3.0.
Error in reporting: YouTube is definitely NOT fubared. They were running into problems, but fixed the issue. Everything works.
No, you didn't use pwnage tool on your iPod touch 2g. It doesn't have support for 2g. Redsn0w is what you have to use.
Nice fail
I never said I was using the pwnage tool, I said I was using the jailbreak.
So I don't believe I was the one failing there "goff"
Anthony, you said "I'm using it on my iPod touch 2G and it's working perfectly" in an article about pwnage tool.
So yeah you did say you were using pwnage tool.
And don't confuse it, you fail.
Running 3.0 on my ipod touch 2g... Just when i thought it couldn't get any better.
Steve Jobs gets a liver transplant and this Dev Team does this to him and his company. The Dev Team has some big time bad Karma their way.
Because he does not understand the word "freedom" in the first place.
I'm sorry doc but I have to disagree - the iphone shouldn't be a closed system so the Dev Team should be praised for their good work. If it wasn't for people like the Dev Team I wouldn't even have an iPhone.
So, if anything they've good some big time good Karma coming their way
Well, the article is about pwnage tool...
Clearly, a general discussion involving all of the Dev-Team's iPhone/iPod jailbreaking and unlocking products are allowed, no?
Or do you support Engadget making separate posts for each? People generally hate this when it comes to Apple products. I tend to agree with them.
I'm having issues running Pwnage Tool. It crashes every time in the middle of creating a custom ipsw. Anyone know a fix? I miss SB Settings and all my hidden apps because of Categories.
I'm running a ppc on 10.4.11. I have an original 2g iPhone.
See my previous post.
If you had read some more before attempting to jb / unlock your phone you would have found that PPC is not supported, only intel pc's. Plus, due to some bugs in 10.5.6 it has been recommended to upgrade to 10.5.7.
This only works on Intel Macs.
For Windows and PPC, get redsn0w instead.
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/126908912/redsn0w-in-june
Thanks, I'm going to try redsn0w. But the dev blog says that their having issues with PPC macs which I'm using.
ppc is not supported on either at the moment but way to link something that proves how wrong u were
Yay! Now I can finally get that Battery percentage indicator Apple insists only the 3GS can handle.
May I ask what the name of the add-on you installed to enable that?
SBSettings does that... and a lot more...
I've updated my Iphone and I have the % battery indicator without Jailbreaking my iPhone 3G.
I have the % indicator on my 3g running 3.0 as does everyone else, not sure what you are talking about...
"Tap Usage and turn Battery Percentage on to display the percentage of battery charge next to the battery icon in the upper-right corner of iPhone (iPhone 3G S only)."
http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/#settings.usage
If you have the battery percentage enabled on a non-3GS phone, it's some freak occurrence due to left-over files from previous jailbreaking. I've never jailbroken my iPhone 3G, and I don't have it. Apple's documentation confirms it as a 3GS-only feature.
Just for those people using old-skool 2G iPhones, Pwnage tool does unlock it, I'm using mine on Orange now and its working fine.
yup, got my iPhone 2G working fine on Tmobile, Mpls MN :)
btw, the $5.99 tzones plan still gets you full EDGE data on the iPhone :)
Do the new versions of quickpwn support the older devices like 1st gen iPhone,iPod touch or are there specific veersions for each device.
Everything is working perfect for me!
UPDATE: As of 4:00am Eastern Time the Windows Jailbreak has been released. "redsn0w-win 0.7.1"
I installed an IPSW someone else had put together (due to lack of easy access to an Intel-based Mac), so I don't know exactly what settings he used in the build, but I can confirm that on my iPhone 3G, YouTube works just fine. Now it's just a matter of making a few new icons for my favourite themes. :)
Could you PLEASE email me a link to the custom ispw you used because I am also on a PPC Mac. Also on the custom ipsw you used were custom boot logos used (the pineapple) or
was the original apple logo kept? Please let me know. I really appreciate it!
Please email me at 4555057@gmail.com
Thanks again. I was scared to try a custom ispw that was not tested.
I'm having issues with some of the cydia apps though, seems as though some are not patched yet (understandable) or something went wrong with my jailbreak. ToneFX and iRealSMSQuick seem to have issues. ToneFX works on the phone, but I can't get any tones added from the mac applicatation, keep getting iPHUC errors (not a joke name, thats what the error comes up as). Anyone else tried these cydia apps with 3.0? If its just my jailbreak, I'll try it again because these apps worked great under 2.2.1.
the devs of those apps needs to update them to make it fully compatible with 3.0
I've noticed that backgrounder and Status notifier don't work either as they were specifically coded for 2.2.1
don't worry, your jailbreak is fine.
just give it some time and the devs will come thorugh.
Yes ToneFX appears to have some bugs in it and is still not 100% compatible. My ToneFX will not play the customized sms ringtones I have for SOME of my contacts. It appears to be selective in which contact it will work with.
lala~lalala!!
"It should goes without saying, but they're might a few negative side effects to it."
The amount of grammatical fail in this sentence is quite astonishing.
:agree:
Wow. That sentence doesn't even make sense.
Why are itards pwning what they love?
Have tried on iphone 3g, worked great. thanks
Bluetooth marketing
how far down the line do you think the windows version is?
Out already, go get redsn0w
I built a custom ipsw from the 3.0GM ipsw (iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore), installed it on my 3G with pwnage tool, and it works flawlessly on AT&T.
Dear god... Another "patch" for the heavily overpriced brick.
I hate even reading about iPhone more and more each day...
Dear God, I'm so tired of people posting on stories they have no interest in, just to complain. Especially when their complaint can be completely fixed by:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/20/tired-of-iphone-and-or-apple-news-on-engadget/
I don't have a problem with people coming into Apple topics with legitimate criticisms, because then I get to knock them down, but these guys who complain just to be complaining. It just feels like a lot of wasted energy. It also puzzles me how these same people go out of their way to accuse Apple fans of being douche bags, while they themselves are acting like douche bags.
Have to agree with both of you there - if, whilst skimming the rss feeds, there's something i'm not interested in, I simply skip over the article.
If you hate reading about it, don't!
Simples
What I think is funny is how people call Mac/iPhone owners stupid sheep, and then find a completely different line of attack when they turn out to be clever hackers...
I love your generalism and assumptions, gentlemen.
While I agree the hackers are quite skillful and that I could've easily skipped all the iPhone articles, then there wouldn't be much left to read over here though. And since I took the time from my break, fired up engadget just to find out another one of a gazillion iPhone articles, naturally, it stirred my emotions "a bit".
Funilly enough, I was quite interested in the N97 reviews and thoughts, I didn't find any! But instead, I know how many kilobits/s iPhone runs over WiFi, how many fart apps there are, how many people stood in rain waiting for something they could've ordered online "just for the experience" etc... it's getting a bit tiresome and annoying. It actually makes me NOT to want to return to engadget for my daily dosage of gadgetry as I already know what I'll see here and I'M NOT INTERESTED IN IT!
@ loocas:
"It actually makes me NOT to want to return to engadget for my daily dosage of gadgetry..."
bon voyage!
Works Great!!!
My MMS and tethering still works, as does tricker3g. Im a very happy fanboy ;)
First Gen Ipod touch was loaded with 3.0 firmware and jailbreak yesterday. Not a single problem either. Nice work dev team
Ran through redsn0w but can't seem to get Cydia icon to show up.
Saurik's server seems to be down (Cydia), so Cydia is doing some strange things and won't update, but other than that, it's all good! Can anyone confirm the downness of the server?
yeah, won't refresh the main page but the sources work fine if you reloaded them earlier.
I imagine redsn0w has thousands of people slamming cydia right about now.
Stupid question but there's nothing on the actual site that's helpful as far as I could find (please link if there is....)
Where do you find the IPSW that you need to use for redsn0w? I have an ipod touch 2g, and I'm attempting to use it for that.
Try this website as they have full tutorials along with links to all the needed files for jailbreaking and unlocking:
http://www.iclarified.com/
Thanks, that was a big help! :)
Just so everyone knows:
-You need an Intel Mac to use the new PwnageTool
-If you have a PPC mac but have a PC use the new Redsn0w that just came out on PC to do your jailbreaking. Even though Redsn0w is universal it doesn't work well on PPC macs.
I want to go through with the Jailbreakk, but have a question.
Are we going to need another update to activate MMS? If so, I'm just going to wait until thennn. Thankss.
Not that I don't trust what people are reporting but I'm not going near this for at least a week, once the dust settles. As I travel from one unlock / jB site to another I read completely different reports on various issues. One site will say that something works, while another site will report that it doesn't or to wait as the Dev-Team is supposely still working on fixing it.
I'm glad for those reporting that all is well, but there's as many, if not more, that are reporting some serious issues, including locked or bricked phones.. My advise for those who are trying this for the first time, read, read, read & read some more before attempting any jailbreak or unlock.. If you've had to ask a question here then you aren't ready to attempt these tasks...Take Care All..
The iPhone is the AOL of mobile phones. I can't understand why people buy them
They've got too many built in restrictions.
I jailbroke my 2G with 3.0 earlier with Redsn0w.
I have had "No Service" since I jailbroke mine early this morning. This is the same thing that happened when I jailbroke my last iPhone 6 months ago. I would warn others not to jailbreak their phones if they rely on the cell portion of their device. WiFi continues to work fine so if you have some kind of VOIP solution then you can proceed without concern.
I had the same issue. Read this article and try to restore through itunes using a modified ipsw package. I had the same issue this morning and now everything is butter smoth:
http://www.ismashphone.com/2009/06/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-os-30-on-windows.html
I was always curious about jailbreaks and the process. How easy is the process? Do I have to wait for jailbroken updates once I jailbreak it or could I just update it through iTunes and then jailbreak again if I so choose?
The process itself is very easy.
1. Update your phone in iTunes
2. Download the firmware package to your computer
3. Open redsn0w and point it at the package
4. push a few buttons when redsn0w tells you to
Done.
The drawback is that everytime Apple puts out a software update, you have to wait for the jailbreak, then update from iTunes, and reapply the jailbreak. This makes you lose all your jailbroken apps as well, so you have to reinstall. It's not much of a pain, seeing as how updates aren't that often. I definitely recommend it!
This is a must unless you like their tired old applications.

Anyone tried a 3GS yet? I'm missing SBsetting like crazy. Not to mention my 87 cracked apps I have installed :)
Does anyone have a link to a tested custom ipsw I can use? I prefer one with the original boot logos if possible!
Thanks!

Having trouble jailbreaking my 3g iphone on the new v3.0, i did restore in itunes after downloading pwnage tool and putting phone into DFU mode pressed alt+restore and chose the restore version my pwnage tool created and then itunes proceeded to do the restore but at the end my phone went back into bricked mode. Any advice from anyone? i am using windows mac 10.5
Make sure you have iTunes 8.2 and 10.5.7..
Also, if you want to stay with AT&T, make sure 'activation' or whatever it says in Pwnage is not selected..
Unlocking isn't supported, yet..
oh yeah, is it windows? or mac? or windows mac 10.5?
this should help:
http://www.ismashphone.com/2009/06/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-30-using-pwnage-tool-30-guide.html
I have an iphone that is running 2.2.1 and i want to use it with tmobile. Would this new release work for me? if so where can i get it?

Some websites are reporting that QuickPWN will NOT be released for the final product.
Don't know the validity of these reports but that is pretty grim. Odd considering they released it for the beta.
QuickPWN.Blogspot was where I found that info.
"but there's lots of caveats here"
there _is_ lots of caveats here? C'mon. It isn't about "grammar police", it is about coming across as a knowledgeable source of info.
