Flash 10 for smartphone beta coming this October
It's been a while since we've heard a peep about Adobe's Flash 10 for smartphone initiative, but according to a slide from its Q2 Fiscal Year 2009 earnings presentation, the platform's on track for a beta release this October at the company's MAX conference. Prime mobile OS candidates for the beta include those from Adobe's Open Screen Project, which at last count included Nokia, Palm, Google, and Microsoft -- and unless there's been some behind closed doors meetings, the two glaring omissions on that list are still gonna be bugging you come this Halloween.

I need Flash 10 for my n810 and/or Ipod touch!!!!!!!!!!!! come on already
another lip service about flash player.
LOL how many times we heard about fp for ipo 3g and now ipo 3gs the fastest most powerfull blah blah blah still does not have fp !! ROTFL These people should be jailed for so many broken promises
Apple wont pay for flash they want it for free and adobe will never give it to apple for free if they do every other company will complain
so yeah dont hold your breath for flash support, i'd like flash support for my ipod touch browser though, would be nice
could be 10 bucks app for suckers in appstore
sorry i do not see your point
Apple and RIM are part of the Omissions. Ipod touch and iphone arent getting flash along with everyone else
apparently you can still buy liver in this country without flash player :-/
@ DR House
your such a troll
Is there flash with the iPhone 3G S?
If not I HOPE this brings it officially!
It's ridiculous that something as vital as Flash is not yet on the iPhone etc.
Why are you complaining, Steve Jobs has decided that you do not need or want flash on your Apple devices, so you should be content with what your lord Steve has given you. Don't forget to prostrate before your Apple idol at least 3x daily.
is this why they havent got 64-bit working yet? :(
Oh noes!!! The iPhone is done for now. Every, and I mean EVERY smartphone worth it's salt will be running Flash except that keyboardless, non-selling handset from, you guessed it, Cupertino's very own bitten fruit company. They failed at cut, copy, paste, they failed at tethering, they failed mainly by breaking the cardinal and most important rule of not implementing full application background processing. That was basically the dealbreaker that prevented huge iPhone weekend sales. Absolutely nobody needs or wants a smartphone that DOESN'T run full background processing. Productivity is hopelessly cut by every application you can't run at the same time.
Lack of Flash will cause every single iPhone user to dump their Safari-using, browsing-unfriendly device because what's the point of browsing without having Flash enabled. So, you iPhone losers, gloat while you can because Flash is the new background processing that Apple will miss out on. It's true that the iPhone has the highest browser traffic of all smartphones combined and doesn't have Flash, but that's all gonna change. All of you who just bought new iPhones, dump them NOW. Apple has cheated you grieviously by denying you a tremendous 2% of the total internet experience.
Ask anyone on the street how important Flash is to them and they will tell you...."Look buddy, I've already got one on my camera and that's enough for me. Now go away."
@iphonerulez: meltdown much? lol - pathetic.
@iphonerulez
Welcome to the Dark Side. Muahhahaha
"Why are you complaining, Steve Jobs has decided that you do not need or want flash on your Apple devices, so you should be content with what your lord Steve has given you. Don't forget to prostrate before your Apple idol at least 3x daily."
This, of course, is unbelievable bullshit that demonstrates a complete inability to grasp facts. The reason why Flash is not available on the iPhone is because it absolutely sucks on the Mac OS platform because Adobe are incompetent. On a Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz processor I see the Flash Player taking up about 120% processor time (i.e. 1.2 processor cores) just to play a crappy YouTube video. In contrast, QuickTime uses less to show a full 1080p movie and Microsoft's Silverlight 2 only needs about 80% processor time. If you were to bring this software anywhere near the iPhone then your battery would disappear almost instantly and customers would be complaining.
As and when Adobe can deliver an efficient Flash Player for the Mac platform then I am 100% certain that it will be provided on the iPhone. Frankly, I rather hope the World Wide Web can standardise on HTML 5 and then we won't need Flash - wouldn't that be wonderful?
Why is it Adobes fault? Why should they work harder to write a program for just 10% of the home computing market? Furthermore, is it at all possible that they problem may be with OS X?
@Kelmon
"The reason why Flash is not available on the iPhone is because it absolutely sucks on the Mac OS platform because Adobe are incompetent."
How is Adobe incompetent when Flash runs reasonably well on Symbian platform with 2 or more times slower hardware?
@gadgeteer
I am sorry - did you miss the part of my post where I noted that not only does QuickTime play full HD movies using less processor time than Flash does for a crappy YouTube video, but Silverlight wipes the floor with it? And you ask why this is Adobe's fault? Clue: Adobe writes the Flash Player software so they are responsible for its performance.
Its another benchmark for Mobile Browsing!
"Phone X lasted 4 hours running flash, and phone Y lasted 3 hours".
I can hear my phone's battery crying.
I LIKE TURTLES!
Would be nice if it could be used for iPhone/iPod Touch.
ive noticed that Apple fans are all optimistic....
why?
Steve says no flash,
ohh, well, we dont really need flash, it'll just slow us down.
riiiight.
Nah, we don't need Flash and we don't want Flash. I think HTML5 will fill in the blanks as far as streaming media is concerned. I just can't see a bunch of random pop-ups on an iPhone. That crap needs to die.
Awww, Paul's mighty, infallible god phone has failed him so he has to dig to find ways to explain away this major omission. It's hard work being part of the volunteer iFanboy militia.
Honestly, I don't want Flash on my iPhone. But then, I don't want it in my browser either...
@ Kamil
Actually, Jobs made the comment that mobile flash was too shitty and regular flash was too bloated. He said that he wanted Adobe to make something that was light weight and performed better then the mobile version. So, this looks like Jobs got what he was after. I'm usually not to big into speculation, due to I hate ever being wrong, but I can guarantee you that the smartphone flash will be on the iPhone in October. Well, whenever its officially released at least.

OH GIVE ME A BREAK! Your Apple fan-boyism is so obvious it's making you look like a clown. I know you're well known here as the Apple fanboy but I don't normally buy into that but this statement just makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.
Are you honestly telling me that if the iPhone 3G S were announced with "Flash 10" support you wouldn't be all over these comment sections bragging and shouting about the fact that your precious iPhone just got better and "beat" all other phones? Really, look deep inside yourself and try to come to an honest answer. Can you do it?
Look man, I'm a big Apple fan (typing this on my beautiful 17" MacBook Pro) but your completely blind fan-boyism is just getting ridiculous. If you want to be taken seriously (and maybe you don't), try and be honest with yourself and everyone else. Jesus christ.
@JayCee
Paul has a point, if the iPhone had flash I would leave it off so I could save my battery and so pages could load at a 1/2 way decent pace. I mean flash would be great but What would I use it for? you cant play internet games from a touch screen phone anyways, there are apps to stream music, my iPhone has a video player built into it along with apps for streaming video, i dont see why the iPhone needs flash till science can create a battery that can support the needs of a device streaming flash online.
@CraigJ --- keep telling yourself that while the rest of us browse Newgrounds, Hulu, CollegeHumour, Dailymotion, Kongregate, Current, Armorgames, etc, etc, etc...
@JayCee, who said: "Are you honestly telling me that if the iPhone 3G S were announced with "Flash 10" support you wouldn't be all over these comment sections bragging and shouting about the fact that your precious iPhone just got better and "beat" all other phones?"
Yeah, I have to admit, I WOULD brag about it, but just to annoy the heck out of the Apple Haters. It might surprise you to hear, but I also didn't want Voice Dial and Video on the iPhone. I find both of those features kind of useless. I've used the video on my flip phone exactly once, to record an OSHA violation at work, but other than that, I have never understood the need for low resolution cell video.
I guess it comes in handy when the cops are beating people or choking paramedics. My current flip phone has everything I want or need, but I'm holding out to see what's offered with the iPod touch in September. I would rather keep my little flip phone for calls. I would probably drop an iPhone and break it in a week.
I also would like to remind everyone that I DON'T own an iPhone and that I have two Macs and 3 old PCs. I know it won't matter to most of you, especially the Apple Haters. The Apple Haters can't dispute the factual information I present in my arguments, so they either resort to calling me a Fanboy or a Troll, hoping that people don't listen to my message. That won't stop me.
"Newgrounds, Hulu, CollegeHumour, Dailymotion, Kongregate, Current, Armorgames, etc, etc, etc..."
My point exactly.
@murmerer
You don't want flash on iPhone to save battery life. Come on, you just said it. iPhone battery and your balls suck alike. Flash is one feature iPhone Users have always dreamed about. iPhone didn't even care to put a lite version. Even a 110$ Nokia has Flash Lite. iPhone is serious piece of shit.
So I'll be enjoying flash on my Zune HD in the fall? =D Wooh!
Flash sucks and I hate developing for it.
Woot! Flash coming to my G1!
Mine too! Silly of RIM and Apple to not take part in Flash 10.
i have flash player on my andriod right now g1 with hero build hero has flash player on it im a bit surprised engadet did not report that
That's right, Flash, come to my ARMs.
Ha. See what I did there.
lol nice =D
I see I see
Hell, it's about time.
YES!! Flash for Android!!!!
Hope so.....
Apple just got OWNED.
I love Safari!
Yes, Apple PWNED!
Nokia, Palm, Google, and Microsoft . End of the list
It's not officially pwnage until they actually release it. Until then, none of them have it.
@kevinm: Beyond Flash Lite, WinMo already has Flash 7, akshully.
this is so awesome!!
I was on WinMo 6.5 today and it had flash lite. It was crappy, it sucked.
And this is going to be awesome
