HP unveils Photosmart Premium with Touchsmart Web: "world's first web-connected printer"
Looking to make the wild and not-entirely-wondrous world of printers exciting for the first time in decades, HP has just unveiled the "world's first web-connected printer." If you're wondering how it plans on accomplishing such an impossible mission, let us just say this: the Photosmart Premium is going the way of the widget. Up on the 4.33-inch front panel is Touchsmart Web, a touchscreen interface with several bundled, online apps to accommodate usual paper-friendly tasks such as printing Google maps, tickets from Fandango, coupons, recipes, Sudoku, etc. There's even a full-on HD Apps Studio just in case downloading new apps on one's printer really becomes the new hotness. The API's being made open for the entire realm of developers, but we have to wonder what kind of interest we'll see here. Pricing is set for $399, and if you're thinking "why not just buy a cheap netbook and plug it into my current model" we hear ya, but we get the impression this is aimed squarely at another crowd. Lots more details are just past the break.
Update: We just had a chance to try the printer / Touchsmart for ourselves. First off, surprise, the screen is capacitive touch, and it works well -- but only one finger at a time. We asked a rep about multitouch and were told that while technically feasible, it's not gonna be supported at this time. The widgets are created with a combination of HTML5 and Java, and much to our surprise, video streaming has been implemented. The Monsters vs. Aliens trailer we saw was decent resolution, but really, it's not a place where we need pristine quality. More screens in the gallery below.

doe's it print ?
You can imagine someone hacking your printer and sending you spam printouts while draining your ink!
Isn't that already happening via fax spam? (not that anyone uses fax anymore :P)
Wow, that's actually pretty impressive!
That's what she said.
very cool
Impressive? $400 for a consumer quality printer with a touchscreen? This thing is a huge waste of money..
great printer i'm in search of a new one so maybe this one could be the one
iPhone killer?
+2
No seriously...I really cracked up reading that because that thought was in my head, LMAO
Yes. And clearly Engadget is biased against it. Could they have found a more unflattering picture of it? I'm sure they tried.
I remember that article.
People was complaining the Zune HD pic was unflattering, LOL
This site gives me good laughs
definitely kills the iphone....unlike the iphone this thing ACTUALLY can print money.
I am looking for the the iphone 3G P ("P" is for printer) soon, Apple better step it up.
So it's a fax machine?
HAR HAR HAR
But I digress...
This seems really nice though. I was hoping they was meaning like the printer would be hooked up through the internet...and through a connection you could print from anywhere. Like consider this...
You're walking around...see something nice like. You take a picture and tell your wifey you want to go there for a nice lil date.
You choose the option to print said picture along with it being geotagged. It corresponds to that...and prints a map also.
My description isn't the best...but you get what I'm saying?
Just the ability to print from anywhere, at anytime, straight from your phone. Especially with us having full browsers now and not just WAP ones
I seriously hope you don't teach children English. As for the restaurant, most people would MMS, unless they own an iPhone.
Shut up samboini.
I agree with your idea, thats what i thought when i heard internet connected printer
=| I could type to prove how literate I am...but that would be a waste of time.
So on to the comment. You can not print from a MMS. That's the main point. Cutting down search time.
Just simply send a request through the network. Information arrives to the printer. Map is printed, picture is printed, maybe even some coupons (but I doubt a nice restaurant has coupons lol)
It would be just another way to simplify things.
You could have pictures already waiting for gathering before you get home.
Main point...this does have potential if put to good use and marketed right.
but there isn't clear use for that... now days printers print pages in matter of seconds... so yeah... you will save whole 20 SECONDS... that will be in a ads... I though of that to.. but later it didn't make sense to me...
Hey...every second counts, LOL
But that's why I said if put to good use.
But in the end, I doubt it will ever happen. So it's just endless rambling right now.
You know, I'm pretty sure a little bash script under a computer connected to a printer and the internet could do the trick. Here's what I'm thinking (and this is all under Linux, too)::
1. Send the picture and the GPS coordinates to a page (with a PHP backend probably) hosted on your computers web server.
2. The script would then save the picture and hold the coordinates in variables. You'd probably have your start address be the one of your home, so it should be saved into a variable already.
3. The script would then connect with a google maps URL with those location variables already put in, and probably another variable for the print-page style. The page could be saved.
4. Then the PHP script would use CUPS to print the image and the directions.
There could be different but similar ways, too. :]
Time to hack via the internet connected printer and print lots and lots of Goatse photos for some poor family?
Sadly, this was the first thing to come to my mind as well.
Ditto
You know, I am personally Done with HP for my home printers. They can give them away, the damn ink cartridges are so damn expensive and IMO a joke for capicity. Also... Really, do I need 150mb drivers for one printer; apparently I do :O
Every time I go up to that printer it is out of some color; and me being the typical father; I get pissed because I rarely use it.
Never, ever again.... It's going to the curb for free pickup when I pick up that Samsung Wifi black one.
On a positive note** my office 8mp and 5si are workhorses, and the toner lasts forever. Weighs about 150 lbs, but it is built like and runs like a Tank!!
It doesn't matter what printer you get, ink is going to be expensive. And for the price, the new photosmart printers that use the 564 cartridges are pretty economical on ink for a photo printer. If you want the best ink consumption on an inkjet, get an HP Officejet 8500 series. They have better cost per page than laser. But just because your kids are using your ink constantly, don't blame the printer for being bad on ink.
HP by far makes the best home printer, closely followed by Canon, then Epson and Brother both suck. They are the WORST printers ever, only ahead of those Kodak pieces of crap. Yeah the ink is cheap, but if the image quality sucks and it is not reliable, who cares?
Engadget, please note that the linked HP article actually says "HP Introduces World’s First Web-connected Home Printer". "Home" is the crtical difference here as there are many web connected devices out there by other companies which have been intended for the workplace.
Some things shouldnt be connected to the interwebs, I dont want to waste all my ink cause my printer got hacked, those things are expensive!
Then hack a server and print through here.
I think the risk to be hacked via such machine is barely less than a webserver.
I worked on a project like this over 10 years ago, but the company eventually killed the idea. Shame, because it was pretty damn useful.
do not put 'computer' with too much function in a device, just connect that device to your computer.
Ah yes, the words of Confuscious.
hmm.... internet and a printer, ohh the possibilities.
So when can we expect them to start sending SPAM to our web-enabled printer? Coupons? Ads? Once you've got widgets set up and access to the web, I'm sure someone will figure out a way to use it for advertising.
All Your Printers Are Bel.....
Ink cartridges. How much? What Red-$50, Green-$50, Blue-$50, Yellow-$50, Magenta-$50, Black-$50.
Only $400? Yea, Zing Ba Bing! Suckers!!
So this HP LaserJet I've had for so many years isn't the first 'web-connected' even though I can print over the Internet with it?
This looks interesting!
its a souped up fax machine
@ tigres.Everyone knows that you do not allow children access to printers as they will print every picture they can find of Spongebob and Hannah Montanan, just so you can discover them lying on the floor, under the couch, or being urinated on by Sparky the family dog 30 minutes later while you are on your way to Office Depot to buy more ink cartridges.
I've been through about six different HP printers in my life time and have used three different ones at work. Actaully im replacing my HP 6810 All-In-One series printer because it was breaking down on us. All the InkJet printer binge on ink. 90% of the time we would only use black and white prints but even then the other colors would run out. We were replacing colors every few months that we never used. And the printer wouldn't print anything (not even black and white prints) any one color was a close to being empty or had an error. It was almost comical. Our photo printer at work has the same issue. The All in one 6110 at work had to be replaced because we kept getting an unknown power error. I've known two other people with that printer and both them of got the same exact error. Dont even get me started on HP's god awful software. Its been awful for the last decade.
I think HPs have some of the best image quality in printing, but i dont think they are a practical solution printing photos. If someone wants a color printer, great there are plenty on the market, but if you want to print good color photos, just pay $.20 and print out your digital photos from Walgreens.
The sad thing is that I still think HP printers are quality even having most of the ones I've owned break on me in two years of minimal use.
This reminds me of when they combined TVs and Fridges. Limited market, expensive and impractical. It's interesting but it doesn't mean we need it.
ahahha i remember bestbuy promoting the hell out of the LG one that was 7000 dollars lol what a joke. and all the rich housewives were being convinced as to why they needed it.
@NOCknock
LOL.
True, oh so true.
No printer for YOU my son...
Awesome - now every printer will spitting out russian pr0n and v1agra ads.
smells like....FAIL
"world's first web-connected printer" ?
hey HP, no thanks that's a lot of words. I'll stick to fax thank you very much. Great job on inventing the fax machine... again.
Hey Engadget, you guys hear that they're coming out with a "portable computing unit with onboard monitor and built in keyboard and mouse"? Though I think their patents may have been leaked because I've seen some other vendors advertising for similar machines called laptops. Hope it works out for them.
And tons of people have been asking for a web connected printer...?
Here's an idea HP: Rebrand a web browser like Firefox as an "HP printer driver". Sell it for half the price of this printer to all the people who are too cheap to buy this printer, but too dumb to realize they don't need it. :-)
if you stream video, does it print out each frame for you to make a flipbook?
why de heck you need gps there? or what was that
Maybe if it wasn't an all-in-one....
I do not do those.
just testing
For the scanner part, can the 'fax' hook up to web offerings like eFax in order to lose the phone connection for a fax machine?
I bet the ink is $100000000
This is pretty epic, if not totally and mostly useless. I mean, maybe if my laptop or PC died and the only thing I could do was use this, it'd be awesome. (That or not needing to boot my laptop in the morning to print off things for classes), but, I can do that already with my current printer, just slide in a SD card, and it ha a screen, pick what to print from it, and, well, it'll print.
This is probably just for the 'wow' value that in 10 years will be included on every printer, and you'll look back 10 years and remember how jealous because your rich best friend got one, and then you remember how crappy they were back then and how you really didn't need it but MUST HAVE IT anyways.
I hate the print quality from HP printers and how little ink you get for your money but this is impressive, I admit
wow cool, a 21st century version of a fax machine.
That "other crowd" for whom this printer is supposedly made are not the people who would write custom apps for printers. Two or three college students might toy with one that gets installed in a computer lab, and my money says they find a zillion exploits that make this printer yet another Russian black market commodity :P
