Seagate unleashes three new BlackArmor storage devices for small business, road warriors, mercenaries

Looks like the storage freaks at Seagate are back on the scene with yet another array of BlackArmor devices for securing all that precious data of yours. First up: for the small business types, the NAS 220 storage server sports 4TB of shared storage capacity for up to 20 PCs. If that's not your cup of tea, the WS 110 is an external (USB 2.0 or eSATA) drive available in capacities up to 2TB. Lastly (but not leastly) the PS 110 is a 500GB portable drive perfect for road warriors and the like, sporting a thin form factor (12.5mm). All devices include automated full-system backup, SafetyDrill+, and AES 256-bit government-grade encryption. Both the BlackArmor WS 110 ($159.99 for 1TB or $309.99 for 2TB) and the BlackArmor PS 110 ($159.99 for 500GB) are available now. Although I have a number of external 500GB hdd of theirs, after their hdd debacle of failing HDD, I don't feel comfortable buying their stuff anymore.

I personally have never had any problems with any Seagate drives. Probably have owned....30+. I guess I may be fortunate, because I have heard other users with the problems you refer to. But I personally assemble all my externals, so I guess these aren't for me.

I haven't had one single issue with my 500gig Seagate externals. But, the way the company handled a defective product and its customers left me with a bad impression of Seagate. I avoid using those 1.5TB hard drives regardless of the prices.

I will never buy another Seagate product for my own personal use. The 1.5 TB issue and the multiple,multiple headaches with the ST3500320AS models at work have put me off on them for good. Even though they are still under warranty, once they come back from RMA, I am still having problems with them on a daily basis. On the other hand, our Western Digital drives rarely have problems and surely not mass issues like Seagate.

Sounds like a great price - except the Seagate warranty is useless and does nothing to protect your data.
If anything happens, you can wave bye bye to your data - even if the disk is fine. You will not get your own disk back and they just send another working unit back to you.
I had/have a FreeAgent which went bad and found out about the warranty, so I pulled the thing apart and installed it in another enclosure where it works perfectly.

Wow what a great point - Seagate sending back a different drive on a warranty/RMA claim is clearly unique in the industry right. :facepalm:

No the point of the warranty isn't to backup your data for you - the point is if the drive goes out in the 4th or 5th year, you won't have a paperweight.

Maxtor's black armor drives required local admin access on the computer in order to use them. Any idea if that's changed?
