Have at it kids, the iPhone Dev-Team's Ultrasn0w unlock for legacy iPhone 3G owners is ready. The unlock works with the original iPhone as well but not the iPhone 3GS; for that you'll have to be patient. Hit the read link to get started on your eight-step program to carrier independence. No donuts or coffee but at least it's free.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

The unlocked iPhone 3G and 3GS are also available from cnadigital.com in the UK. They are even more cheaper than the PAYG version

I'm curious, would this solve the problem of AT&T locking out Go Phone users' data? Or can they still block you even if the iPhone is unlocked?
no because unlocking only allows you to use any sim card. I guess the only other way people can use the iphone with att's gophone is with a IMEI changer which is only available with 1st gen iphones.
I found a post on TUAW that mentions that you need to tweak for data settings to get data service again on prepaid and you may not need to unlock. So basically it seems they changed the data settings on 3.0 for those who don't have an iPhone data plan, but you can still tweak them.
You can change your apn setting at unlockit.co.nz using wifi on your 3g after installing the 3.0 upgrade, and it *will* restore your data connectivity. I have a 3g with a PYP and the old Unlimited Medianet option (not pay as you go), and it works fine, I had data functionality back within 5 minutes of upgrading to 3.0, but I've heard others did the same thing and it did work. I also have unlocked tethering as well. MMS still hasn't shown up but I have a feeling my account was provisioned against having MMS when I connected my iPhone to it. I did have MMS before though on my other phone.

I don't have an iphone. But, is this the first unlock for the iphone 3G, or has there been others and this is just a new one?
This is to unlock the 3.0 OS upgrade that just recently came out. The 3G has been hacked multiple times for a long time now, but for different versions of the OS

@xnifex Ultrasn0w is from the dev team and is too unlock iPhone 3G. Redsn0w will only unlock the 1st generation iPhone. Redsn0w will jailbreak iPhone 3G but not unlock.
@Engadgeter but ultrasn0w is installed via Cydia/Icy anyway... so you first Jailbreak via redsn0w (or Pwnage), and then unlock after by installing ultrasn0w off Cydia/Icy. No need to use non-devteam tools.

Works great in the UK, just tried a Lebara sim.
Now with Redsn0w it says not to rely on it if your 3g is unlocked with yellowsn0w but now w/ ultrasn0w can I jailbreak w/ redsn0w and get the new baseband unlock w/ ultrasn0w? That is the only thing I am waiting for confirmation on.

My understanding is that in order to buy an iphone, you also have to buy the 2-year plan.
So if that's the case and you unl0ck it, and go T-mobile or sprint, aren't you still locked into the ATT plan.
I understand you can buy unlocked phones on ebay and such but how are these ppl getting the iPhones w/o the contract? I can't just go walk into an Apple store or ATT store and just buy the iPhone.

You can walk into an AT&T Store and buy the phone with no contract. You just have to pay $599 for it. It's been posted on Engadget before.
There are 2 ways of getting an iPhone off contract...
In the UK - you can buy a Pay-As-You-Go iPhone from 02/Apple. This does not have a contract and you pay a steep amount to have it. You can get the 3G and 3G S this way. The 32GB 3G S is more than $800 at the off contract price. The models are still locked to 02 - but this unlock will unlock the 3G model and allow you to use any carrier - worldwide after unlocking.
In Hong Kong - You can buy the iPhone from Apple themselves fully unlocked. You simply place any SIM card and do the official unlocking via iTunes. This allows you to do firmware updates without ever locking it. The only thing you may want to do is jailbreak it so that you can run unofficial programs off Cydia. They currently only offer the 3G. The 3G S is "coming soon".
The UK 8GB 3G PAYG price is £342 ($557). The Hong Kong 8GB 3G price is £350 ($570). Prices are more or less similar worldwide.
I'm not sure about any other territories offering PAYG or contract free official unlocks. I know France has to offer an unlock by law, but I think their official iPhone carrier only offers a contract.
The unlocked iPhone 3G and 3GS are also available from Play.com in the UK. They are even more expensive than the PAYG version.
I'm on an 18 month contract with O2 in the UK, and am quite happy with the service. However, when I go on holiday to Greece for example, I don't want to have to pay expensive roaming charges when making calls to Greek numbers. So I buy a Greek pay-as-you-go sim card and use it in the iPhone during my stay.
