Sprint takes a bite out of the Apple, touts innovative Pre features like 'multitasking'
From the look of it, our BFF Roger McNamee stole himself a copy of Adobe InDesign and has gone wild in Sprint's ad department, calling out the iPhone for its unitasking nature and spendy contract price. All we have to say is that if this is really going to turn into this generation's Sega vs. Nintendo war, we'd better see a whole lot more licensed Joe Montana titles.

I agree!
Att has 2 towers of 3g in michigan. Sprint covers the whole state in evdo rev a.
I am sorry, I like my speed and coverage!
i have a winmo touch on the sprint network and i can call and use 1x data at the same time.
One reason why I don't like apple!
I went to get my ipod repaired. The Greeter at the front door ask me what he can do for me. I say "i need to get my ipod repaired".
He said "our geniuses are not here today" I am like "what?" Then he tells me that he is a concierge. I was think to my self. You are just a younger version of a walmart greeter.
@atx1980, aka the stupid kid. are you sleeping with the sprint CEO himself?
If you were an honest person, you'd describe how you set your genius appointment up, then went into the store and had it fixed or replaced during your appointment. but since you like to make shit up, you can just fuck off with your lies. Hows that?
Actually i walked out the store and am now going to buy a zune hd.
Sprint is getting close to bankruptcy.
Well, I used a Pre for the first time last night. Went to a bar and someone had one these mythical devices that's supposed to eat Apple's lunch.
Verdict: Built...like...crap.
And the tiny slide out tray with the "give" just makes it worse.
Sorry Pre.. VERY 1st generation and a non starter (unless you HAD to stay on Sprint)
But I should add the screen looked nice, but it seemed like I was holding a light plastic breakable version of a polished stone you fine in a garden.
My 1st gen iPhone looked like Conan the Barbarian compared to this thing (as it it could take a beating)
WOW this is one of the best so far!!!
Can they really say they have 4G? does that exist?
And in test, I've seen the iPhone 3G S load web pages faster on ATT's 3G than on Sprint's "4G".... So... >_> That argument is null and void.
If apple and att can say 7.2 mbps then yes sprint and pre can say 4g.
FAIL!
Look at the PRE's keyboard reflection..
I agree. IPHONE!
Oh engadget, you just made my day. The best way to spend friday lunch: watch flame wars.
I don't think pre has the right to go head to head with Apple just yet... They must first combat blackberry and come out successful on that front... Which i don't think they can do (STORM VS. THE PRE) Blackberry trumps em..... Blackberry's Storm is the closest performance, fluidity, and feature wise..... (Bit still not the Iphone) You can run small-mid sized businesses with the two..
OOOOHHHH!! In your Face Apple!
and at&t.
The Iphone is the new razr phone for mass public (mainly in US) since most people just use it because they think its cool, its simple to use and a nice interface. People look at it and say "oh cool, its touchscreen and I have all the basics and general features", none of them the best. I would like to bet how many out of the entire Iphone users know how to create a .cab or reprogram their device.
All they know is Touch --> App-- > Install --> iTunes --> repeat
If you want a true multitask phone : WinMo phones
Camera phone: Look for SE with xenon flash
Phone for tweaking/modifying : Android/ WinMo (pretty much all HTCs)
Good overall build/performance : Nokias Nseries
New OS with good performance : Pre
There is no perfect phone! If there was, then why would you buy any other phone????
And im sick of all u trolls saying the Iphone is the best, the Iphone is the best only for you because thats all you know how to do!!! See if you can go to xda-developers and understand how to cook your own ROM or reprogram your device.
Aghhhh needed to let this out haha
Do you know what the purpose of people when they buy a phone ? basically people want a phone to call or entertain like listen to the music surf web and play game, communicate and do business, not hacking. and Apple created a device that 's easy for everyone to use not a complicated device to reprogram.
Phone is just a phone, people can choose which one is best for themselves, Iphone user get what they want and stick with ATT, if u dont feel comfortable with iphone or att, switch to other carrier or find another phone, that's it. I'm Iphone user and im happy with wat i have
lol that was a cute ad
Please convince me... why would I want to buy a phone from a company that is nearly out of business? What's going to happen with my phone support when it does?
I feel it is completely necessary to point out that it seems like the Apple fanbois blow this WAAAY out of proportion compared to the Palm fanbois...
Apple fanboi: PRE IS A PIECE OF CRAP AND WILL NEVER BE HALF AS GOOD AS AN IPHONE
Pre fanboi: I enjoy my pre and think that the features it offers are best for me, but the iphone is also a nice device with great features...
Does anyone else feel this way? I'm a VERY happy Pre owner right now but I still think all my friends with an iphone made a good choice. And while we banter back and forth about strengths and weeknesses we all believe they're both good phones.
Come on Apple guys (and obnoxious Pre guys), show a little class.
Your Iphone contract is up. Perfect Timing.
The Palm Pre does things the Iphone cant. Like making phone calls.
ZING!
"I heard the iPhone eats babies"
"Ok yeah? I heard your Pre rapes kittens."
Don't care about Pre, iPhone is too god damn overrated.
But Sprint >>>>>>>> AT&T for sure.
Can't say I care much for promotions like these. I hate when a company isn't confident enough in their own product and have to cripple their competition through ads. I own an iPhone, love it, but thats about it for Apple imo. Their mac vs pc ads make me sick. Try selling your product instead of downing another!
I can't wait to see this ad in 20 years, like the old Commodore one that made fun of Apple, Palm will not be around then, but I bet Apple will be.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! I'm waiting for LTE, but that's not a 4G network? WTF!
They had a good argument up until that "and." I know it's not out yet, but it's not like I can pick-up a Sprint phone and hop on its 4G; it's not exactly "national."
In 20 years, Steve will either be dead or retired just like Apple.
Oh yeah? My Pre can give me turn by turn directions to get to bed at night while playing music, pushing emails from three accounts, checking facebook updates and even tucks me in at night. =)
Multitasking being an innovative Pre feature? What about Android?
Ohhhhh, I get it, an Apple core. Wow, that's hilarious!!!! Sprint isn't paying their marketing geniuses enough green. What's next? Applesauce? Apple marmalade? Johnny Appleseed throwing his phone in the crick?
So many people getting hyper-defensive over a freaking CELLPHONE...comon people graduate from the 2nd grade, this isn't life or death.
pre can multitask. sprint cant let you talk and do data at the same time. sprint=fail. for me i cant even think to consider the pre because of this. i dont know how may times ive been on the phone and had/wanted to look up something on the net, gps, etc for the people on the other line.
Somehow I doubt I will be rusing to trade in my IPhone just yet!

desperate pitch for sales
the pre is yet another "also-ran" iPhone wanna-be.
Sadly contrary to apparently EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD, I've never had a single problem with AT&T. So, as fashionable as it may be to jump on the "Bash AT&T" bandwagon, I have no impetus to do it.
PRE!
Open source OS ftw
yehforgames in wow arena
I love the smell of desperation in the morning!
The telecoms do a great job of deflecting attention.
Buy the phone you want. keypad, multi-touch, video, editing, applications, multitasking, whatever. It's all about technology. This time next year we'll be talking about the rumors of the next Pre, the next iPhone, the next what have you. If you buy it for function, or status, or gaming, or work, they all do their respective jobs quite well. And they're all only going to get better. That's what great about competition; they're all really good at whatever it is they do BECAUSE of everyone else. We all should be passionate about our choices.
But what we should be bashing is not the other phones. We should be bashing the telecoms. The guys providing the service to our handset.
Right now, I have to endure crappy phone service from ATT because I want my iPhone. My wife has to suffer the short comings of T-Mobile because she wants her Android phone. And we have to deal with whatever insane pricing plans are "offered" because, well, they can set the prices as high as they want.
The phones aren't the issue, they're always going to be a little bit different from each other and have their strengths and weaknesses. ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon. They should all carry the same inventory. This would force them to compete on service plans, the only product they REALLY offer. We, the consumers, would reap the benefits of low competitive pricing on phones AND service. Every consumer would win.
One word for you people... schadenfreude. You all need to stop hoping that the opponent will fail, be it an iPhone or a Pre. If you own an iPhone, just be happy the iPhone has been so successful already. If your switching to a Pre, I wish you and the Pre the best of luck.
P.S. Apple made a concious decision to not allow backgrounding, to avoid slowing the iPhone down.
I'm planning on getting a 3GS when Belgium sees some proper stock but I can appreciate the advert. I consider the background 3rd party applications to be a non-issue but saving money is always compelling. However, I suspect that Sprint will be unable to collect new custom from existing iPhone owners who have liked their device; rather, those that will switch are those who didn't like the iPhone, and that's fair enough.
sprint is kidding itself.... no iphone user would drop their iphone for a Palm Pre....multitasking or not....iPhone is still the most powerful smartphone in the world....apple will eventually do multi-tasking. either just for a few programs at a time or the trade out might be removable batteries... i can see them breaking the "apple norm of internal batteries" for iphone. either way there are so many external battery/cases for iphone for $30 bucks.....2400mah also which is double the life of the internal iphone battery. i have a 1800mah mophie juice pack which most of you know is a battery/case combo and i have a MyBatt 3200mah that has a ipod connector on it and is NOT a case it dangles. battery life is just NOT an issue. i have 3 external batteries...i just swap em if i need to....mostly only when traveling but occassionally a busy day comes where i reach for my external battery/case near end of day.
How about this? Goth phones are great in their own ways.
How about both instead of goth? lol. WOW
Small Picture = Pre vs iPhone in North America
Big Picture = Nokia still owns the world.
Taking a stab at Apple is like punching Chuck Norris in the face. It reminds me of these Audio Vs. BMW billboard ads
http://adsoftheworld.com/files/images/juggernaut.jpeg
Nevertheless I'm looking forward to see apple stop screwing around and unleash some features that people are jail breaking their phones for. Seriously what harm would it do to allow people to multitask or customize their iphone a bit.
