Acer Aspire One AO751h reviewed -- sweet battery life, sad CPU marks

Acer's 11.6-inch netbook -- the Aspire One 751h -- has been available Stateside since mid-May, and Laptop's spent some quality time with it, delivering a full review. Overall, they found the nice, large screen to be welcoming, and the battery life (on their 6-cell configuration) was fantastic -- clocking in at over seven hours. They were, however, pretty disappointed in the 1.22-GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, finding it to really slow the unit down. They note that other similarly priced models boast better processors, and might be a smarter choice. The Aspire One 751h runs $399 with a 3-cell battery, and $449 for the 6-cell version. Hit up the read link for the full review. One more shot after the break.

That's a fugly battery butt....
i know look at that ass i'd it hi that
It may stick out, but to someone who actually has an original A1 with the extended battery, it's one beautiful battery booty. Six hours FTW.
I like big butts and I can not lie.
I like big butts and I can not lie
I hate it when that happens.
little lump in the hump isn't bad... something to hold on to.

It seem to be more decent and attractive
it is said to be One year warranty and 30 days money back! Shipping all over the world.
Is it me or do netbooks seem to be dying down. I was going to buy one and ended up with an acer 6935G.
you certainly dont buy smart for two for the torque.
Always you have take one, battery life or processor speed.
ARM
we are talking about big boy toys though, not phones
You have to compromise. You can't crank out 7 hours of battery out of a 6 cell and expect stellar performance. I don't know, I just don't think the purpose of a netbook is to provide power. You carry it around, do word processing or internet browser on the go. The Atom processor is fine for that.
Same old, same old issues
what's the point? only can take in 1Gb RAM max...
The point is..... it's a netbook. So 1GB is plenty for most situations
Redcard is right... It's not as if Firefox (or any other web browser) took that much RAM, this is not a working/gaming machine. It's an internet machine. Maybe some simple word processing, but that's about it. It might make the machine faster though...
My comp has 1 GB and it's more than enough for everything I do with it.
It can take a single 2GB RAM module too.
I would stay away from ACER. I got a laptop from them that fried (and I mean it overheated, and FRIED) two hours after opening the box. My friends have had similar problems. Personally, I'm staying away from the whole brand.
So Acer drew First Blood?
The market is still everywhere and there are little differentiating factors between one notebook and the next. I think I'll wait a couple years before picking one up.
bought the 6cell from costco for 350 a couple months ago and am somewhat satisfied with the netbook. overall its very sleek and thin (being less than an inch thick), however it lacks in processor speed as i will admit and would have preferred if acer in fact used the n270 instead but i guess this processor was opted to reduce heat issues.
Was there a reason why they did not or could not use the regular N270 or N280 processors? I do believe this 11.6" model of theirs is thinner than most netbooks but looks like they should have made it bulkier with a more powerful processor.
is this thing suppose to run on DOS?
Any sleek, efficient operating system should do nicely.
...'cept Snow Leopard, of course, but that really remains to be seen.
I asked because of the CPU speed......
I've tested this netbook but version with Atom 1.33 Ghz. My test is posted here (polish language): http://dailytech.pl/3327/laboratorium-dailytech-pl-acer-aspire-one-751/
isn't z520 is 1.33GHz ? or is it came with z115 which is 1.20 GHz ?
The guys at laptopmag must be really professional journalists if they can't even copy the specifications correctly.
The 751 has a GMA500 graphics, not 950 and if you compare this one to other netbooks you will see that there aren't that much netbooks with >1024*600.
I got one of these for my wife. No complaints so far. We get around 7 hours on a full charge. The irony is that the sales person told me I would get about 4.
In any case, if I was looking for power I would not be looking for a netbook at all.
I have an 8.9" model, and I liked it for a while... the trouble with it is, it's made REALLY delicately. I compared it with all the other laptops in the store recently -- as opposed to the other ones, on this laptop the screen is so soft you can push on it from the outside. I was gripping it very tightly one day (trying to keep someone from grabbing it out of my hands), and the screen totally cracked. The processing power has never been the same since. This is something to keep in mind when toting around an ultra-portable computer.
(Also, it should be noted that these laptops are so cheap - my model is selling for under $300 now - because they don't come with real word processing software or anything like that. So they're perfect candidates for trying open-source.)
This netbook is all about the battery life it appears. Though I imagine netbooks based on the upcoming Atom+Chipset on die (codename: "Pineview") will have even better batter life in all likelihood. Those might be out for Xmas?
For better or worse depending on your needs. For me, I'm keeping a keen eye on the Gateway LT3100 netbook.
right now you can get nice core 2 duo laptops for under $500, so why bother with netbooks?
Laptopmag's review was surprisingly short-sighted. Those opted to compare an 11.6" netbook with a screen resolution of 1366x768 to 10" netbooks with screen resolution of 1024x600 (the only two 10" netbook with 1366x768 screens are the HP 2140 and Dell Mini and you should see how absolutely hideous their 6-cell batteries are). In fairness, 11.6" is closer in size to 12" netbooks and the comparison should have been there. LaptopMag would've been wise to do a quick Google to find out why the Atom N270/N280 is not found on netbooks larger than 10" and they would've easily discover that Intel has a restriction on where manufacturers can put the N270/N280. That's why current netbooks larger than 10" must use the slower Z520/Z530 or some other chips (perhaps Intel will loosen the restriction in the future?). Examples: Dell Mini 12, Asus S121, Samsung NC20, Gateway LT3103u.
So yes, the 751h has a slower processor than the N270/N280. But I don't think it's Acer intentionally crippling it; it's Intel. Call it the larger high-res screen penalty. If you don't want or need the 1366x768 (I for one this this resolution on a 11.6" screen is the perfect compromise between 10" and 12"), skip it and get a faster 10". Acer has done a good job keeping this netbook small, thin, and light.
very nice netbook. it looks very beautiful.

Wow. What a piece of crap. I found one in a local Wal-Mart, and asked for someone to ring it up. It came up, "DO NOT SELL." So they went and got another one. They all should read, "DO NOT SELL."
I took it home and used it for a little while. While the screen is gorgeous, viewing angles aren't as nice as on the smaller, less expensive 8.9" Aspire One. So one person can enjoy the bigger screen, but not many.
I made a minimal BIOS setting change (wanted to see the POST messages per a recommendation I read online) and the laptop went into an endless "No Operating System Found" loop after this minimal change. Pressing F2 to go back into the BIOS was fruitless, as was plugging in a bootable USB device. It's gone, basically. So a day after I got it, it went back.
Kudos to Wal-Mart for giving me all of my money back. No restocking fees, no questions, no nonsense. When I looked around for similar netbooks afterward, everyone else had goofy stipulations. One place said you could return a netbook, but you had to take store credit only.
Once the 10-inch Aspire Ones are in stock, I'm going back to Wal-Mart.
