iPhone 3GS takes plunge in pool while shooting video... and lives to tell the tale
Now, we're hoping this isn't some elaborate hoax perpetrated on the kind citizens of the internet, because if it's real, it's amazing. Here's the deal: a man capturing video poolside with his iPhone 3GS somehow loses control of the device and ends up dunking the entire phone... while filming. Miraculously, he manages to fish out the handset and it's still rolling. We don't know what the lifespan was / is beyond this clip, but obviously long enough to upload the video or transfer it to a computer. Impressive stuff, though we strongly suggest you don't test this one out on your own. Check out the full video after the break.

Are you kidding me? WORST ACTOR EVER! THE DROP WAS INTENTIONAL! You're not very smart if you think otherwise
try the macbook next
I'm unavoidably skeptical. My first iPhone got damp, not submerged while kayaking (the bag wad supposed to be sealed!) and quit working entirely. It now works minus the accelerometer or reliable battery life. My 3G got, again, only damp when I was caught in a rainstorm, and now the camera doesn't work.
Here we go! (rolls eyes) A bunch of people claiming their phone still works after dropping it in the water with obsolutely no evidence to back up the claim.
I have to add that I have yet to see any electronic device that wasn't meant to work in water work until after it was dried out. Given Apple anal-retentive obsession to keep you from opening their products, I don't see the iPhone drying out for a couple of days.
How's this enough evidence for you? And look how long the phone actually survives before dying:

What are you going to say now? the water is fake?
Oh and look, the phone died while still in the water, not after it was pulled out.
It needs a little pair of iSwimwings, and no swimming within 30 minutes of downloading an app.
Video description on YouTube: "Was trying video on my new iPhone 3G S at the pool and dropped it in the pool. Don't know if it's waterproof, but it still works fine. I had a few people comment on seeing a strap in the video. I have a rubber cover and had put a strap through the earpiece hole to avoid just this type of thing. I didn't have it on my wrist at the time, but believe me, I will from now on!!!! Maybe the rubber cover helped with it not getting damaged."
Denmark is in the middle of a desert?
I dropped my iPhone 3G in a giant mug of beer... submerged. I almost pooped myself as I saw the bubbles rise to the top. Everything works perfectly..............except the Home Button. I have jailbreaking community to thank for the continued use of my phone. And yes, I drank my iPhone 3G-flavored beer and it was delicious.
Waterproof iPhone? Maybe he got it in the app store!
It's a Oneder it still works!
LOL funniest viral marketing ever. Calling it an accident! bologna!

Waterproofing service on any phone. Cats outta the bag now, sorry its not a "S"uper phone after all.
Even if its an iphone 3GS, which i doubt it is, its in a waterproof case. You can see the strap at 0:31.
think about it, why would someone put a strap though the earhole on the rubber case? that would make the phone hard to use if you try to hear a call. What an idiot.
I can also do this on my iPhone but ofcourse I'm going to put it inside the ZIPLOCK first.
iPhone 3GS => water and oil resistant finish

Awesome!! iPhone 3S S...ubmersible!
btw why do engadget always put 'after the break'? what break?
OK, so I bought my son an iPhone 3G (not an S of course) last year. He left it in a trouser pocket by mistake and his mum put it through the washing machine - full cycle including rinse, spin dry and tumble drying. When she emptied the machine and found it (son being very unhappy at this point) it was left to dry naturally in the air for a couple of days... and then worked perfectly. This was in February and it's still working perfectly.
it will work for 1 -2 months then the metal parts with corrid and it will be a paper weight sell it quick MAN! ill have it for 5p,and that is no crap, alot of ppl fall for this drop it in water and think it still fine then they wonder in months time why it suddenly stoped working lol,not saying this is the case but 95% of the time it is,paper weight in a month.
But... will it blend?
Thats a good idea ,iif he sells it to me for 5p i will blend it !
ps
one thing i forgot to add on my post is i know the phone is water resisant But that is if it stuctural intergraty survived the fall, without damage and
GPS, GSM, internal speaker, vibration motor... all going to fail soon.
So, when the camera finally fails, it's become an expensive iPod Touch :P
That's not "amazing"/.

...
That's not an iPhone 3G S, it's an iPhone 3G Ass
I love that iphone users are so "HOLY SHIT, MY IPHONE CAN NOW RECORD VIDEO!!!! FTW!!@!!!!", and are now recording everything. I think my parents Nokia 1610 can record video.
Is a hoax, and that is the proof: http://www.notcot.org/post/22692/
...because we must trust Apple's statements! :)
You know it's an iPhone because it's the only device that can bring out that many fukcing idiots and apple haters to comments on Engadget.
Haha, his reaction at the end is great.
Pause the vid at 31 seconds....you can see a camera strap of some sort. Not usually one to cry FAKE but it all seems so staged lol
I have 2 dead iphone 3G's from getting them dunked in water. 1st was my wife's after the phone slipped out of her pocket and into the footwell of one of my seadoo's while the seadoo was on the trailer. Then just 2 weeks ago I had my iphone in my pocket and went into the river totally forgetting my phone was in my pocket.
My phone experience this video is totally fake... iphone's are not waterproof. Anyone that believes otherwise should try it for them self :D
Why is this a big surprise? Isn't one of the new features of the 3GS to be water resistent? Although that doesn't mean 100% waterPROOF, but water resistent watches work fine when people wear them while swimming.
I actually dropped my ipod touch in the lake and grabed it out, wiped it off, turned it off (yes, was still playing music fine). left off till next day and has no issues from it. One of the good things about a sealed up hard to work on or impossible to swap batteries out of device, hehe.
now this is what i would call a quality product
is it just me or it that video in a completely diffrent aspect ratio than the iPhone 3GS's?
Well maybe Apple should mention that in the next iphone ad. Being waterproof is not common among mobile phones is it?
