Acer's been on a tear with the new gear lately, and while we're not going to say we're as hot for the new Aspire M5800 tower as we are for, say, the
Timeline, it's still a pretty nice little machine -- you're looking at a 2.66GHz Core 2 Quad with 8GB of RAM, 1.5GB GeForce GT230 graphics, a 740GB drive and HDMI out for $800. Not bad at all. Little brothers Aspire M3800 and X3810 are far less interesting, with a 2.5GHz Pentium and integrated X4500 graphics for $450 in a tower or $529 in a low-profile case. Not exactly mindblowing, but you've still got HDMI out, so they could make for reasonably cheap HTPCs if you don't need much more than Flash support. Acer's also got a new display out, the 23-inch H235H, which offers 1080p resolution, 2ms response time, a 160-degree viewing angle, and 100,000:1 contrast ratio for $239.
Wow, that isn't too bad for 800 bones.
1.5gb of ram on that graphics card? o.o
I don't understand this trend towards 16:9 displays. It can't be a cost thing can it? More vertical pixels are desirable for virtually everything but watching HD video.
it's more natural to have windows side by side than one on top of another as it's easier to look left and right than up and down so if you're going to work on more than one thing at a time widescreen is the way to go. 16:9 is also closer to the golden ratio (1.61....) than 4:3 is.
@John: And 16:10 is...? Exactly. ;)
I have to agree. Browsing the interweb with those common 1280x800 resolution is a pain in the butt. I want to see more contents in one screen and don't have to scroll down as much. That's why I go with Lenovo as it is on the the few manufacturers that offer 1440x900 in a 14 in. laptop. Those full 22in+ HD monitors is a must for me. Can't work with in anything lower than 1440x900.

Can anyone give me a reason you would need 8gbs of ram I don't think having more than 3 or 4 really helps
Because even against all attempts to stop us by MS and hardware manufacturers and their drivers some of us still use 64bit OS's.
Acer is putting out some good stuff for the money. I use my acer laptop almost exclusively of late. They will pass Dell shortly for #2 and might catch HP if they don't start making some better machines.
Actually I think Sony is still #1.
Sony's certainly not #1 in total sales, which I think is what eattrn was mentioning.
@google5555
Sony hasn't been making any good lately. The only thing that they made recently that was an good was their OLED TV but thanks to Samsung that's no more. Sony is a fish out of water. I'm sorry but you have to put Sony close to last place because their designs are old and their pricing is not even reasonable, if I ran Sony USA then it would be a different story though =D
Just proves that taste is subjective, I guess. Sony industrial design is awesome, and good design is expensive.
Sony's ns series is pretty damn competitive, once you start playing with anything other than baseline specs
Whats the equivalent to the GT230? I dont know much about nvidias lower level offerings.
I still find it strange that now even cheap computers come with so much ram. These days I can barely find a use for 2GB on XP. I only upgraded to 4GB for Vista. Probably not even really needed.
I remember back in 1998-2000 or so still owning a cheap 13" CRT. I was asking around online and doing research and everyone told me Acer (and Viewsonic) made the best monitors back then. Are they still decent? I really wouldn't know.
Right now I have a Dell 24" and it's the best thing ever. I bought a second display for another PC and it's terrible compared to the Dell. The poor viewing angles just ruined it. Before the Dell I had a 19" Viewsonic and it was pretty good, if a bit more expensive than most displays.
I think if a 30" LCD monitor comes down to $600 i'll buy one. Might be another year or so. These days 24" just isn't enough space for me.
RAM is cheap and they just fill the slots with or 1 GB or 2 GB sticks. I've found it's pretty hard to use more than 4GB without something like FF2 with its godawful memory leak on a consumer desktop though, but I suppose 8GB with a quadcore is pretty future-proofed
That's true, Sony hasn't been doing to well lately, they are a really good brand though(my personal favorite), it's sad to see them like this... :P
That speaker design looks familiar... hmm...
It looks pretty good.
I understand the change to 16:9 ratio monitors my question is why are they keeping the sizes under 25". For a while there they had 26" monitors coming out and I was hoping for 27" ones as well. But all of a sudden they stopped and went with a wider ratio and went backwards to 21" and 23" give or take and hovering around this size why is that. I currently have a 24" 16:10 gateway which is fine since 2 years now. I was hoping to upgrade to a 27" or so. But the market went to these wider smaller ones. Guess now I have to go 30" if I want to go bigger for $1000 which I refuse to pay for one.
if you really wanted, you could get a 27 inch dell refurb for $500 and another 27" model at $600. Or not. I've got one- the price was right, I can deal just fine with 1900x1280 and life's good in my multi-tasking world.
M5800 - would be a nice slick experience with Windows 7 on it
this may be a christmas present for myself - may even be cheaper
then!
I've never considered buying anything other than Dell or Sony b/c of their sleek designs but if Acer keeps up this awesome work I definitely see myself grabbing one of their machines next time I buy a new tower.
Very interesting desktop...
Seems the design choice and color for 2009 is the same as the one in stark morose futures as seen in certain scifi movies, like equilibrium and such, futures without human warmth.
So I am guessing that the "Aspire M3800 and X3810" are the replacements for last year's X1200 series? Or do they have a cheaper model still to come out?
