Welcome to the UK. You can get any phone free on contract, it just depends which monthly plan you want. This one is free on GBP 40/month, others 45,35, 30, etc. Or you can pay 430 up front and probably around 20/month to get all the feature access you'd need. Or you can choose a smaller monthly plan and pay a little for the phone. Options are good.
Contracts are 18 or 24 months long.
Hero or Touch HD...and I don't mind winmo or android...
Both will be low quality.

the touch hd has been out awhile... reviews show that the build quality for touch hd is of decent quality contrary to your opinions.

I love it, i hate the feel of rectangular flat phones when talking, Its like talking into a brick. I like the fact it contours to the face. To each his own. But guaranteed HTC will release a similar device without the kick soon if flat is your thing.

The chin is tits. Try it. As I mentioned in another article regarding the Hero; it's made that way to make single handed use easier.
I know it seems like it wouldn't do much. But after extended use, you will notice that your thumb muscles aren't screaming at you. That little kick saves your thumbs about half an inch of travel while holding the phone.
That, and it facilitates the ability to catapult small berries at people across the room from you. Should you ever have the need to fling small fruit, that is.
If the phone is as awesome as the song I'm getting one for sure!

Please also tell me that you understand forking out $30 a month could be better in some circumstances than laying down $400 upfront?
It depends. I've been on PAYG for a while, but looked at my usage n realised I was spending about £18-£20 a month. Ended up getting the Tocco Lite free on a £20 contract, so the Tocco is possibly £0-2 a month for me now.
And I'm also in no position to put up £400 up front for something like the Hero.
Actually you do. To use any phone you need to pay for a carrier's bandwidth, use of antennas, and personel. Whether you make a two year committment or not, you still need a carrier (unless you're using VOIP). So yes, I saved $300 on my iphone 3GS. I saved.
Hmm I replied to this but it doesn't seem to have appeared. You guys misunderstood. I wasn't talking about PAYG; I was talking about whether you buy the phone with your contract, or separately. It's almost always cheaper to get it separately if you can. Let's take the iPhone on O2 UK as an example. First if you get it separately:
16GB iPhone 3G S: £440
+18 months data: £60
+150 minutes & 300 texts @£10/mo: £180
Total: £680
Or with the contract:
16 GB iPhone 3G S: £185
+18 months data, 75 minutes & 125 texts @ £30/mo: £540
Total: £725.
So not only does it cost more (only slightly in this case) but you get less than half as many minutes and texts, *and* you're locked into an 18 month contract (the SIM-only one is only a 1-month contract).
Still think it's better to get the phone with the contract?
How do you get data for £3.33 a month?
The data bolt-on on the O2 web site costs £7.34 / month, which would add an extra £72 to your calculated total there.
I was looking at this for the costs of getting the HTC from T-Mobile.
They're going to do the handset with no up-front costs when you get a £40/month contract.
I looked on the T-mobile website to find phones that have a similar deal. If you get a £40/month contract you can get the Blackberry Bold for £30 up-front, but if you go for a £20 / month you have to pay £215 up-front.
Assuming the same price difference between the Bold and the Hero on the £20/month contract as the £40/month one, That would leave you with an up-front cost of £185 on the Hero on a £20/month contract. The total cost over £18 months would be £185 + 18 * £20 = £545.
Now, the Bold is actually £30 *less* than the Hero on Amazon, so perhaps I should be assuming you'd pay £30 more for a Hero up-front - even so, paying £245 up-front on a £20/month contract costs £605 overall, which is £175 more than the handset costs by itself. To get a similar deal by buying separately you'd need to find some sim-only contract *with data* for under £10/month.
So perhaps you get a better deal with cheaper tariffs?

Seriously folks, if your new to this game, heres the best way ive found to cut you mobile costs and have the most fun...
Buy your first phone on contract, get the best deal with lots of minutes and texts an data. Every month when you pay your bill, put an extra 10 £\$ in the bank, then at renewal time ask for a reduction in your monthly plan which they will do because your not subbing a new handset.
Then use that extra £\$240 plus the cost you would have spent on upgrading to put towards a new handset. Best part about this is that your on a 30 day contract and your free to sell\buy new handsets anytime you want. Simple'ss.
