HTC Hero up for pre-order on Amazon UK: £429, July 15 delivery

We doubt the July 15 delivery date is set in stone, but UK residents itching to get a little Hero in their lives are now able to pre-order HTC's latest for £429 ($708). That's pretty much what we'd expect for an unlocked set, but Orange is planning to offer the Hero free on contract, so we'd be inclined to hang on just a teensy bit longer. Video after the break.

Stupid question of the day perhaps? But what if you sign a 2 year contract to get the $700 phone for free and then cancel the contract? Don't they charge you only like $300 to opt out? I know here it's $150 a year to get out of the contract, so might be a little more, but it's still less than $700 I would think.


Anyhow, time to find someone to import one of these phones for me.

Only sometimes. Usually in the contract you have to have the account in good standing for X period of time, usually 90 days. After that, you can cancel the contract and pay the fees. So even with the 3 months of service it would be cheaper. If you get into 6 or 9 months then it gets costly.

So far I've found 1 online seller that is offering the Hero unlocked here in the states (pre-order) for $600.

As an avid iPhone user since they came out, I'm actually really tempted by this when my contract is up. As much as I still love the iPhone, I have a short attention span, so I'm starting to get a little bored of it, and might fancy a change soon, if the price is right.
