Apple's new online tool lets you check iPhone 3GS availability from the comfort of your own home

If you're one of the hapless folks out there still having trouble tracking down a new iPhone 3GS, Apple is making things a little bit easier on you with an online tool to check up on stock at Apple retail stores. There's a full breakdown of color and capacity, which might seem like overkill to some, but given the fact that stores with stock in all four current models are a bit of an exception (outside of NYC, anyways), we'd have to say that this is just the sort of overkill we need.

Thanks for that newsflash - I hadn't noticed...

Perhaps it would help if I clarified my position: something like this would be useful but it only works for Apple Stores in the US and does not show me the stock levels of Apple's distributors in Belgium, which is no use to me. Bugger.

Take a look at California, which has tons of Apple stores. The 16Gb white has the lowest availability of all the models. I wonder if that's because of supply or demand.

figures GA would be available everywhere, I spend two weeks trying to find a 3G. Wish they had done the pre order last year. Or I was getting one this year. Atleast I won't have a problem upgrading.

what about ATT stores?
the kinda overkill i need is to be able to go to my verizon store and cancel the day my contract ends, knowing that i can safely cross the street and go to ATT to get my 3G S

My store in Atlanta showed a full stock but they were severely understaffed to handle the customers in line with their hard-earned credit ready to be spent. There were only 10-12 people in line, but they had been in line for 2.5 hours. C'mon Apple! Do the right thing and bring on some extra staff to get Iphone purchased processed in a reasonable amount of time. This is atrocious customer service.
