Wow, we don't even know what to say about this week's slate of new releases on Blu-ray. All we can really say is that even though we're used to being bored by the studio's Summer offerings, this week is especially weak. We'd like to say things are about to turn around in the coming weeks, but in all honesty it appears that Hollywood wants us to go to the movies instead of enjoying our HDTVs.
- 12 Rounds (Fox)
- Do The Right Thing (Universal)
- Flawless (Magnolia)
- Two Lovers (Magnolia)
- Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li (Fox)
- Home Front (Cinevolve)
- Tokyo! (Liberation)
Barf
I think blu-ray might sell better if they start putting out stuff people might consider buying.
2x Barf
I guess this will give me time to save up for late July's titles like Watchmen and Coraline.
"...this week is especially weak..."
What!? That's the extreme cut of 12 Rounds! The EXTREME CUT!!! ;)
This is an awful selection. No new episodes of TV series on this weekend and it will be hot as heck outside. Good time to watch movies. But the new rentals are sure limited!!
Blu-ray is flat on its back, this is total proof!1!!!1!!!!1
Especially Do The Right Thing, which almost otatlly wrecked Speake Lie's career!@ And last week's Lost and Burn Notice... lamer still.... wtf, who waches those shows?
-Pie (filling in for Multi-Platform-Mayhem while he's obviously ill, as he hasn't commented yet.)
:D
damn...another week of garbage.
Actually, this whole summer has been so far very disappointing with Blu-ray releases. I just don't understand - are all these studios waiting for Christmas to release every bloody title that's considered good? Morons, bad way to capitalize on their profits. Of 5 hit titles release at the same time, I may just buy 1 and not buy any others at all - due to savings plus will loose interest over time. If spread over a few months, I'd buy them all. Oh well, guess the studios are saving money for me.
"I just don't understand - are all these studios waiting for Christmas to release every bloody title that's considered good?"
The answer to that is yes. Sales of discs literally double in the second half of the year so that's when most of the good stuff comes. Not always "good" in the critically acclaimed sense but in the profitable sense. Aside from this year's blockbusters, known titles for release later this year include The Lord of the Rings (theatrical edition), Braveheart, Gladiator, Forrest Gump, Gone With The Wind, and Wizard of Oz. Plus I'm sure there will be various boxed / gift sets since Christmas is the time of year when those sorts of things sell best.
I watch MORE movies in the summer because TV is over (for the season) ... I hate the sun .. So now i will catch up on series i missed (Watching breaking bad season 2 now, Just finished Lie to me this past weekend, fell in love with True Blood)
July 28 - Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series...

Sweet!
But bloody hell...$350 MSRP ...actual sale price $220 ....so say $20 for the figure and that's $50 / season...still too steep. Would gladly pay ~$35/season.
Don't forget it also includes the mini-series and Razor...
I forgot to mention all the extended edition episodes...
Not only are Tuesday's offerings weak, but it looks pretty sorry for the rest of the year. I'm glad I never purchased a BD mega changer. When there is nothing worth renting, purchasing appears out of the question for sure! This is not a blu-ray problem (nothing on DVD, either) This is a Hollywood problem. They had better get those summer blockbusters on BD immediately, or the only people making money will be the actors.
This is a promising selection, actually. Blockbusters have been well served by Blu-ray so far - that independent classics like Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee's best and totally library-worthy) and contemporary small films like Two Lovers (which I've heard good things about) are being released bodes well for the film-buff contingency that's likely to buy into a format that promises the most faithful recreation of a theatrical screening on the market.
This brings me back to a decade ago when for months I'd tolerate discs like Blade before the tide broke and films I actually wanted to see were released.
12 Rounds came out a month and a half ago on blu-ray. Jun 30, 2009 I already watched it via Netflix.
