Epson begins mass-producing 'world's smallest' LCD for 3LCD data projectors

Epson's started volume production of what it believes to be the "world's smallest" XGA high temperature polysilicon TFT (HTPS-TFT) panel for 3LCD data projectors. The chip used (an L3P05X-91G00) is approximately 23 percent smaller than its predecessor, and the 0.55-inch panel boasts natural XGA (1024 x 768) resolution. Epson says they're working to increase the resolution on these types of displays, which are currently being manufactured only for 3LCD data projectors. Pretty impressive -- though, we'll just hold out until they start putting these babies into really tiny television sets.

isn't the trick to make them bigger?
OneLove @ Jun 29th 2009 10:50AM
that's what she said!
ChrisTheFeral @ Jun 29th 2009 11:39PM
No, the trick is to increase the pixel pitch. There's no practical use in having a 2x2px 50 inch screen :P
CityZen @ Jun 29th 2009 12:02PM
Yes. Like people discovered with film, having a bigger frame gave you higher resolution.
Sure, increasing the number of pixels (for a given size) helps, but so does increasing the pixel quality (ie, things like the active area ratio). As the pixels get smaller, they tend to perform worse.
ZaxCG2 @ Jun 29th 2009 10:43AM
But...
Why?
ZaxCG2 @ Jun 29th 2009 10:44AM
Oh wait... maybe to make more compact projectors?
belard @ Jun 29th 2009 10:56AM
Electronic viewfinders and binoculars, projectors, mobile phones, any kind of small device.
milkmage @ Jun 29th 2009 11:13AM
way to go sherlock "Epson says they're working to increase the resolution on these types of displays, which are currently being manufactured only for 3LCD data projectors"
Tim Brown @ Jun 29th 2009 11:13AM
This tech could mean native full HD screens on your next phone or pmp, plug and ion into this and you are laughing
loosely_coupled @ Jun 29th 2009 7:29PM
"plug and ion into this and you are laughing"
WTF are you talking about?
10minutehobo @ Jun 30th 2009 6:38AM
"HAHAHAHA, I'm playing on a screen smaller than the GPU"
john @ Jun 29th 2009 10:49AM
Wow. What ever happened to Emmanuel Lewis?
OneLove @ Jun 29th 2009 10:51AM
Hes buried at nevaland ranch (behind the feris wheel)
Randy @ Jun 29th 2009 1:17PM
He's still around. Still small, but not as cute.
3Djesus @ Jun 29th 2009 11:06AM
Netbooks fro 'Bratz'.
Dan @ Jun 29th 2009 11:14AM
This is a projector George Papadapolis could be proud of.
Dave @ Jun 29th 2009 11:17AM
Make a nice watch phone.
Snake Robot Podium @ Jun 29th 2009 11:20AM
Oh LCD, have you forgotten your roots so soon? There are many LCD digital watch readouts smaller than this.
loosely_coupled @ Jun 29th 2009 7:30PM
In full-color and 1024x768?
Mark @ Jun 29th 2009 11:52AM
It would be nice to see a laptop get rid of the VGA slot and just have an on-board projector. This could kill the standard projector we see today.
loosely_coupled @ Jun 29th 2009 7:31PM
Sure, but your "laptop" would be twice the size and 4-5lbs heavier if you wanted a decent projector.
Tru @ Jun 29th 2009 11:54AM
I want tv earrings!
Travis @ Jun 29th 2009 12:15PM
That's sweet!
jol @ Jun 29th 2009 12:49PM
Now if only I could get a 5000x5000 resolution touch phone...
frankXchange @ Jun 29th 2009 2:33PM
The human eye has a minimum resolution of detail, which I think is well below that resolution. It doesn't make sense to produce tiny HD screens, but maybe projectors or HD headsets or something.
loosely_coupled @ Jun 29th 2009 7:32PM
hence the "are currently being manufactured only for 3LCD data projectors."
tskowronski @ Jun 29th 2009 5:11PM
OLED? What do you guys think? Is this better?
Colonel Panic @ Jun 29th 2009 5:12PM
...And yet they can not make a netbook-sized XGA screen.
CityZen @ Jun 29th 2009 6:28PM
Oh, "they" can, and already do.
But:
1) They are more expensive.
2) Microsoft won't license Windows XP at the netbook rate if the screen is bigger than WSVGA.
CBXweb @ Jun 29th 2009 10:44PM
