Alienware's 1080p 21.5-inch OptX AW2210 priced for maximum street fighting
It doesn't do 3D and it doesn't curve all around your periphery, but Alienware's OptX AW2210 does a decent number for its just barely sub-$300 price tag. The 21.5-inch widescreen LCD panel boasts 1080p resolution, two millisecond response time, 16.7 million colors, and an 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Throw in two HDMI and four USB ports -- sorry, no VGA or DVI here -- and you've got yourself a pretty nice option. The screen's on sale now via Alienware direct.
Update: Alienware's sent us word that the monitor does in fact sport DVI input, and it looks like the product page has been updated to reflect that.

shibathedog @ Jul 1st 2009 4:50AM
Yeah for real.
AnnoyingPoster @ Jul 1st 2009 9:15AM
its the Dell SX2210 with a different case

They need a new moniker so badly.

No DVI or VGA?...
er... I pass.
Matthew C @ Jul 1st 2009 12:26AM
most modern graphics card offer adapter to hdmi anyway - its really not that big a deal.
OZ-13MS @ Jul 1st 2009 2:14AM
I too will pass, no connectivity to my KVM.
AMiSH PiRATE @ Jul 1st 2009 2:48AM
damn right, Matthew C! let's never standardize video connection ports! adapters for all!
loocas @ Jul 1st 2009 6:14AM
The only down side to HDMI in Europe is higher tax as ANY screen with a HDMI port is considered a TV, not a monitor, thus subjects to a higher tax!
Lovely EU always knows better what we want and need...
radukk @ Jul 1st 2009 12:02AM
Another dell's expensive TN monitor... Buy 2209WA
JohnTitor @ Jul 1st 2009 12:08AM
2209WA FTW
Ypoknons @ Jul 1st 2009 12:16AM
I really don't get why this monitor is worth it at all. For $300 you can easily get a 24" TN 1080p or 1920x1200 2ms monitor which is bigger, or else the 2209WA 22" eIPS with lower resolution but far superior color space and viewing angle for graphics. The Engadget post also doesn't deal with whether it pivots.
WindowsFTWins @ Jul 1st 2009 1:22AM
There's the Apple tax, the Sony tax, and the Alienware tax.
Not sure which is worse (likely Apple), but a TN is a TN is a TN, and this is NOT worth the asking price, that's for sure.
AndrewNoNumbers @ Jul 1st 2009 1:23AM
The same reason why someone would buy an Alienware over a Dell XPS.
Ypoknons @ Jul 1st 2009 3:37AM
At least you get S-IPS panels with Apple LCDs, so it doesn't hurt as much. S-IPS and LED in one case, though it's marred by a superglossy screen.
mandrakecigars @ Jul 1st 2009 9:00AM
2209WA = 1680x1050 and no HDMI. No thanks.
Justin @ Jul 1st 2009 12:03AM
I drop so bunch pwn as Dan on LIVE!
Toss an add to Shidell if anyone else rocks SF4.
PuBeLeSs @ Jul 1st 2009 12:33AM
what?
Lucas @ Jul 1st 2009 12:06AM
No DVI?
On the website is says "Video Connectivity - DVIx1 HDMIx2"
BowserUSC @ Jul 1st 2009 12:54AM
probably comes with some sort of adapter for the hdmi. The specs on my graphics card said 2 dvi, 1 hdmi but it just meant it had the adapter. Different type of product but I'm guessing it's similar.
Jonyah @ Jul 1st 2009 12:15AM
so what makes this a good deal? looks like it's overprice by at least $100 based on similar monitors on newegg.
OneLove @ Jul 1st 2009 12:15AM
puff, puff, pass.
telepheedian @ Jul 1st 2009 12:17AM
HADOUKEN!
Mike @ Jul 1st 2009 12:20AM
Color me confused.
Why is this a big deal when I could get a 24in 1920x1200 monitor with 2ms response time from Newegg for $280?
Sure it's an Asus vs a AlienDellWare, but still...

I agree with the above posters -- this isn't that great of a deal at all. I sure hope Engadget isn't injecting ads as posts into their stream. But notice how clicking on the large postcard image it links directly to a page where one could quickly place this item into their Alienware cart...
JohnTech @ Jul 1st 2009 1:05AM
In my opinion, you wouldn’t really need a 80,000:1 contrast ratio unless you were planning on playing video games on the sun.
Kevin @ Jul 1st 2009 1:06AM
an alienware item under $1000? creepy...
Tristan @ Jul 1st 2009 1:49AM
It does have a single DVI input, just no VGA input
David @ Jul 1st 2009 1:55AM
TN panel?
FAIL.
RyanTV @ Jul 1st 2009 9:18AM
How do you find out what type of panel is in it?
igoturface @ Jul 1st 2009 2:27AM
Why get this when you can get the better Viewsonic VX2260wm for a cheaper price?
Oh yeah, and good luck trying to own with your lag-infested non-TN panel monitor.
Douche.
Bonqueesha @ Jul 1st 2009 2:22AM
METSU... HADOOOOOOUKEN!
:B
killermojo @ Jul 1st 2009 4:09AM
This is a weak "deal". If you're looking for a real monitor at that price point go for something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001280
Better brand, bigger screen, higher resolution, much better connectivity. Up to you to decide, but I'm not making anything off the Newegg link ;)
killmachine9 @ Jul 1st 2009 5:11AM
What is the best screen for to play games on (with the playstation 3) ?
budget is like $300,-
igoturface @ Jul 1st 2009 5:24AM
It's the Viewsonic monitor as I've mentioned above.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116400&Tpk=vx2260wm
This has been tested by digitalversus.com and the MLG community to have very low picture and input lag.
killmachine9 @ Jul 1st 2009 8:26AM
well thanks for your advice!
Michael S. @ Jul 1st 2009 8:27AM
This does have DVI, but it is a TN panel.
Video Connectivity DVIx1 HDMIx2
Lee @ Jul 1st 2009 10:29AM
Is it a good price? most 24 inch LCD display is $200~$250 in my country.
(Yes, Come with Full-HD+HDMI(DVI)+VGA)
22inch like this is only US$150~220
http://shopping.pchome.com.tw/?mod=store&func=style_show&SR_NO=DGAB2H
Rate is about: 1:33
stromm @ Jul 1st 2009 10:44AM
Um, why are people buying a 1080 display for their computer? 1080 can't display a %100 zoom full page on the screen. That was the whole point of x1200.
Sadly, marketing is winning over reality again. Just like what happened with HDD's and the "gigabyte" measurement crap.
Diesel @ Jul 1st 2009 12:05PM
I can see the TV Ad's already
"Dude, you're getting a Dell Screen"
