iPhone OS 3.1 beta now available for developer community

Update: Still tinkering, but we've seen a new "Save a Copy" option for 3G S video editing that lets you retain the original film while saving an edited clip (picture after the break, thanks Kevin), as well as some reports of MMS being activated, but it seems to stall before actually being sent out over AT&T's network.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

I find it curious that Apple has been very active in updating and upgrading its iPhone OS recently. Or have I been blatantly ignoring Apple news for the last 2 -3 years?
what's been changed???
probably not much...they're just going to use it to disable ultrasn0w...
WTF! From now on I want to see the news of every beta release of Visual Studio!
@EI8HT:
With 3.1 making progress, it probably means 3.0.1 is closer.
Which means my 3G S unlock is closer to being released.
Nah the iPhone OS has been progressing continuously over the past 2 years. There have been lots of little firmware updates too. Unfortunately with most releases they try and break jailbreak but lots of features and fixes have been added as well.
@robpetrin:
3.0.1 isn't going to unlock anything. It's going to patch the hole that ultrasn0w exploits and then no one can unlock.... unless a new hole can be found and exploited. dev-team says they might consider releasing the 3GS jailbreak after 3.0.1 but we'll see.
I've noticed a small thing is that the iPhone vibrates when you make the icons start wiggling
Really hoping that they've added Bluetooth volume control...
I just bought a pair of Sony bluetooth earbuds for about $100, and quickly discovered that you can't adjust the output volume on the iPhone... Since the earbuds don't have a volume control, this is kind of a problem...
>
What are you talking about? Use the ordinary volume controls, when Bluetooth is selected as the audio device the iPhone automatically starts adjusting the Bluetooth instead of headphone out volume. That's always worked for me.
I do not get volume controls either when I'm on bluetooth.
The volume controls on the phone disappear. The hardware buttons also do not make a difference.
I have no volume control on my headset or my bluetooth speaker, so that is a major problem.
I've noticed the same thing happens with docks.
However, I have volume controls on my speaker dock, so that is not that much of a problem.
But I'm sure there are docks without volume controls.
i've been annoyed at this too, on my jabra's i can control the volume, but even at it's lowest setting it's still rather loud, of course i'd like them to fully implement bluetooth for everything the iphone/touch can do with it
Bluetooth reception has been terrible for audio. I'm using a Touch 2G and a pair of Jaybird JB200's, I wonder if its software or hardware.
I bought a Sennheiser MM200. No Skip tracks functionality but volume controls do work. Sound Qualitys pretty good too for Bluetooth. Why Apple decided NOT to implement Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP profiles properly I'll never know. I half expect them to come up with a proprietary bluetooth headset / remote control and charge twice as much as anything else on the market.
hopefully this comes out soon so we can get the 3GS jailbreak out
Hmm, I'm a developer, and yet I don't see it in my list. I got the e-mail and everything. Silly Apple!
@Ishimaru
Nice, I didn't notice the difference between the tabs at the top. Seems there's a 3.0 AND a 3.1 tab.
WTF.
there is a new tab 3.1 silly rabbit
wait, you replied to yourself?
Haha, you replied to yourself. Made me laugh.
I hope this fixes the damn WiFi dropping issue!
Yeah, my wifi has been dropping like crazy recently, but I thought it was my router.
Yeah I know it's killing me. 2.2.1 = had all wifi bars and stayed connected. IPhone 3.0= drops and has 3 bars of wifi.
same here
Not here mine has been great
I dont think it affects everyone - I have several friends with 3.0 [on 3G and 3GS] and while most have the issue - a few dont.
Ive found a few threads online instructing people to turn off push notification, hard reset and forget all wifi networks - didnt work for me.
I've had the same problem on my Touch 2nd gen... and if they charge i'm going into a rage
Not sure if this is a 3.0 issue but I recall being able to use WPA2 prior to the upgrade, can't anylonger :(
SOLUTION:
SBSettings, Turn OFF Wifi and then Turn ON.
RESOLVES THE PROBLEM and yes, It is VERY annoying!
I had that problem too after the upgrade, I fixed by "forgetting" the network and redoing it.
After I upgraded my iPod touch to 3.0 I've noticed a long lag in connecting. Before the update, whenever I turned on my iPod touch it was very quick in connecting to my WiFi, now, however, it is taking a long time to establish a connection.
I agree, the wifi is very flakey at best after the updated firmware. IMHO the update broke wifi.
I'll give u the latest and greatest
Win!
I'd like to see some additional features added to the "find my iPhone" app - as well as tighter security as it pertains to enabling or disabling the app itself.
I don't see this in my dev center either.
I want to see more security holes and increased crash rate. Plz & Ty Apple.
I want $100,000 dollars!
i want to dig two chicks at the time
I want to bury two chicks at the same time (in the large hole I dug in my backyard).
It's in my dev center and there must be something fairly large upgraded. current OS 3 is a 7A341 build. The new one is a 7c97d build. Kinda makes me wonder. even when apple was doing the beta OS 3, they didnt jump letters that fast. must have been something fairly large changed?
So far I only see MMS support added, but doesn't work with AT&T
Man, I really wish AT&T would get there stuff together. Mms is not new and it's still not supported. Let's hope it's a lot quicker. I mean were using the gm bud now, so it should be a lot of fixes
I think that's hilarious that AT&T (the "official" iPhone provider) doesn't support MMS, yet JB iPhones on T-Mobile already support MMS.
I'm on O2 and had it since the 3.0 update. I used it once to see if it worked and that was it.
Does anybody actually use MMS?
That's all I did with my MMS to, checked to see if it worked and never again.
I can't remember the last time I used it on any phone
Any date for the final 3.1 being delivered?
If it doesn't take long, I'll jump the 3.0.
Probley bug fixes, looks like the dev was right, they said apple would release it soon
was at ATT store the other day. apparently lines cannot be moved and nothing major done on their networks until july 7th...the manager told the guy helping me to be quiet about it. so im assuming att is using this down server excuse to update their accounts for iphone mms. how sad is that. they have to allow this in the iphone users accounts....at least we get to use this by end of july.
No. No. One by one ATT stores are going through a software conversion from one system of internal software used for keeping up with accounts to another and THAT is why certain things cannot be done to those accounts in your area. The mms feature is hardly a big enough issue to take that long to integrate.
look at it this way; is there already other phones that have MMS on AT&T? If there is, then there is nothing to stop AT&T from just clicking the 'enable MMS' on each iPhone account apart from their stupid account management systems.
When you select and hold an app icon, the phone now vibrates as the icons begin to wiggle
Meh anything as in wifi better? Speed improvements? Anything else?
Wow, AMAZING NEW FEATURE!!! Totally worth upgrading!
haha i just tried this and it worked. any point to this?
Yessssss! That's the feature I was looking for! I'm glad they decided to put that in there. I was really excited about the compass, but I just actually wet myself thinking about wiggling icons. I love Apples genius.
@ blurmagic
the icons have always wiggled its the vibrating thats new.
Funny, my HTC Dream does that. Nice that it's been brought to the iPhone, cause I always liked that little confirmation that you're now dragging something around.
seems like a battery drainer to me..
I read on mmi that MMS should be working by the official release of 3.1 fw which has been rumored to drop on 17 JUL. Guess we'll have to wait & see.
What's mmi?
mmi, modmyi. got it. thanks everyone.
The developer of lights off and speed suggested that it has haptic feedback, and some other bufixes
Hopefully this includes the forward facing camera.
That's a light sensor, not a camera.
That's not a moon...
LOL! Yeah- seriously!
When they do come out with a forward facing camera, they sure as hell better make it backward compatible with the older models. I'm sick of the way Apple disses the early adopters!
There are a lot of bugs I hope they fix! There are wifi, icon, and some performance issues. Some things have just crashed on me. I hope the iboot hole is still there. I have the ECID thing so I'm good for future jailbreaks though I just want the Dev team to release it. Why the would they need a beta for this? Must be a big change?
I have a few apps that randomly crash ever since upgrading to 3.0 as well. The phone also seems more sluggish than it did prior to upgrading.
I just want to see a bluetooth shortcut without having to jailbreak.
Agreed!
there is no argument against jailbreaking... other than not being able to (i.e 3GS)
+1
Hopefully this will fix the touchscreen locking up on me daily on my 3GS. Wasn't a problem with 3.0 on my 3G so it's got to be a combination of hardware and software.
Yea me too. When I first got the PHONE (regular 3g) it took forever to open up contacts and so failed horribly at making calls. Now I've got a fun issue where I either cannot "Slide to answer" as it just does not pick up or I literally cannot end a call. I hit the end call button and it flashes off... and then right back on.
Yet... I bet this new quick update is not to enhance a somewhat buggy update but to close some security holes.
AD2P which was added sans the 3.0 upgrade did not include the retransmit protocol; meaning it only flows one way (out.) This is simply a software issue as all bluetooth chips have the same protocol depending on their version. Volume controls work via the accessory if it is only attached via dock connector due to there already being established protocols for this type of control. Apple is trying to push accessory specific add-ons with the dock connector so I do not see them adding the bluetooth support in the same flow. (but I could be wrong.) I highly suspect that this "update" is purely fixes and stability. My iPhone 3G has gone from speedy app openings and response to almost purely non existent demanding constant reboots just to have basic functionality. I have also been looking at many apps that issued a 3.0 update user reviews and many (I mean MANY) report the same issue FREQUENT CRASHING; even to the most trusted of apps. All this is why I assume the majority of this "update" is to increase what has made the iPhone so successful... it's apps and stability.
Security option in Safari to warn of fraudulant websites. Maybe that was there in 3.0 tho, who knows.
I'm far more concerned about apple's blatant use of the Lego block image. Lego is very protective of its intellectual property.
The SDK logo is pretty gross too....!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^holy DEBBIE DOWNER^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Lego as copyright is almost inexistent (may be they have some copyright for derivated products).
Lego as a patent is voided decades ago.
Lego as trademark (logo) is still (worldwide) active.
But now Lego has tried to trademark their brick as a (ahem) mark.
Weird but they have won some battles :-/
For the case, lego as a real brick is (in some countries) ruled by a trademark, but the picture of a lego brick is not trademarked, at least not the 2x4 red brick.
Ha Ha! Good one!
I hope they add bluetooth mic support for bluetooth headsets for skype and other voice programs. I was disappointed that I could not use my jabra mic with skype. They also need to fix the wifi range. It sucks.
HOLY SLOW!!! I just updated to 3.1 and everything is lagging BIG time (yes, I did restart the phone). Poopy.
when you edit video you can save or save copy
The new SDK add features, which need to be hidden because iphone 3GS was not yet on the market (third party magnetometer or video application support etc.)
I just want Noise.io to work again ;(
my carrier version shows up as AT&T 4.2 in about . I also see under Messages an option that says MMS Messaging On/Off. Also under Safari there is a option that says Fraud Warning On/Off. This is on a 3G S running 3.1 Beta BTW....
Seems like apps in general fires up alot faster on 3.1
Shaking when moving apps
Update of the modemfirmware to 05.08.01
Spotlight seems to work better
No news on the wifi problem yet tho..
In 3.0 iTunes reguraly updated "phishing filter" on the device.. even got a screenie to prove it.. :) Don't know if the on/off option for "Fraud Warning" was there in 3.0 tho.
New SDK must without a doubt contain more API's that had to be hidden in the 3.0 SDK.
MyBrute doesn't work anymore :p Buhuuu!
Downgrading to 3.0 again seems to go okey, but the baseband will NOT be downgraded, and of this time, CAN'T be downgraded.
how did you downgrade back to 3.0? i tried to do option+restore and it didnt work. it just stays at "verifying restore" or w/e. help would be greatly appreciated.
app store is down...
Quick note to Paul A. Chapel, iphonerulez, Erik, Juebi etc....
Almost 2 pages of comments and despite your desperate attempts to say that all "anti-apple, me too, microsoft loving, pre embracing", engadget readers sit around waiting to pounce on any article about apple... They haven't. Just wanted to bring this up since your absence seems to also equate to the absence of people resisting your ignorance and idiocy... Despite all the complaints right here in the comment section regarding the shortcomings of the new iphone, no one seems to care or they understand that all technology has it's share of problems. Take note, people don't hate apple nearly as much as they hate some of the people that use apple products (you guys). So next time you troll, think about it.
Want it!
Find my iPhone feature now plays alert at full volume even if ringer volume is all the way down.
I also had massive AppleMobileSync crashes while trying to sync my new 3GS (received today), would not even update without crashing on my Windows PC, drug my phone over to my Mac and installed the new OS and it is working and syncing without any troubles.
Please tell me this fixes the slowness issues. My music never skipped on the 3G until I updated and really the only feature i am using is the landscape keyboard (thanks AT&T!).
For MMS to work on AT&T accounts you need a specific feature enabled on the account and they refuse to enable it for the people who know what they need to get MMS working until they are good and ready for everyone to have it.
Let's fix the real issue- unacceptable battery drain since upgrading to 3.0. I have to charge at least twice a day just to keep any juice at all. The Usage and Standby timers since last charge in the settings menu are almost identical, meaning that even when sleeping, the iPhone 3g is behaving like it's being actively used. I know I'm not the only one, and here's a link to Apple's discussion forums to prove it. I'm suprised no one else has seen it here.

@Dan: Agreed. Although I am a first time iPhone user with a 3GS purchase on 6/19, I know the battery issues are real. I posted a poll here: http://www.micropoll.com/akira/mpview/616247-179012 and it appears that the problem persists. Not setting too high of expecations, just live up to Apple's claims:
Talk time:
Up to 12 hours on 2G
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Standby time: Up to 300 hours
Internet use:
Up to 5 hours on 3G
Up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 30 hours
