What's this? An as of yet unannounced
Nikon D3000 camera has allegedly popped up in press photo format, flaunting itself as what appears to be a slimmed down entry level DSLR. The gang
LensTip have analyzed the pic pretty thoroughly against the D5000 and have concluded it's got a smaller body, no HDMI connector, no microphone (so much for a movie mode), and likely no articulating display. Additionally, we've got from
Nikon Rumors what's purported to be our first glimpse at the
D300s body. Given the angle of the shot, the only difference we can spot is the inclusion of a microphone -- then again, it could just be some subtle image manipulation trickery from a rabid fan. See it and decide for yourself after the break.

Does the S stand for Speed?
*chuckle*
boo! long live canon!
I care and am excited for specs on 300s.
I rather like the look of the D3000. But without any video recording capability, isn't it a bit redundant in the camera world?
You'll get D300 image quality in a convenient package at the D60's price tag, which is a great value, I think. If you want video: what do you think the D5000 is there for?
The D300s WILL have video added to it. Its one of the reasons why an 's' version is coming out. Surely you can see the mic holes, that resemble those on the D90 and D5000.
Does this mean prices can finally drop on D40s?
I've been wanting to get a DSLR for a while but buying one from a retailer who isn't a creepy dude in a NYC back alley has proved to be prohibitively expensive for an unemployed college student on summer break.
Oh well, maybe I can rob a bank or something.
zomg, quick log his IP address!
I'm guessing this is REPLACING the D40...it's been out for quite a while...so yea, I guess that would imply D40's would go clearance, haha
Shit. I just bought a D40.
and its got the 18-55 on it. So that makes it pretty easy to tell where its headed. well i guess the 5000 has it to.
Engadget seems to be changing from a macfan enthusiast blog to a photo enthusiast blog.
There were not that much new on Macs/notebooks front.
But digital photography right now is in maturing phase. It's only logical that we see more news about something new.
because of 2 or 3 photo related articles in 1 day?
About that D3000, just price it somewhere in the neighborhood of $600, make the grip more comfortable for large hands than the Canon XS/XSi/T1i grips, and rival the Canon's in image quality, and you have a buyer!
I've been waiting for a camera that is like the Canon XS (you know, cheap-ish but high quality-ish) but with a larger grip, and judging from Nikon's tendency to be comfortable in my hands, this could be the one.
Yes, and don't forget to strip down on all features and sell purely based on brand name. Oh wait, they already did that with the D40s and the D60.
I'm sure a helluva lot more people care about this than your stupid cat video.
FAIL.
That D300s looks exactly the same as the D300, just without the "s".
Fake ?
Doesn't the 5D look like the 5D Mk II, more or less? Just a small upgrade, the D300, maybe some changes on the internals. No need to change the design.
Maybe they just add HD Video recording.
The HDMI port on the D300 will be used more often. ;)
Here's a tip: if you don't care then you can always move onto the next article. This is what people with an ounce of common sense do, rather than posting links to YouTube videos in the comments section of the article that you don't care about.
Another day, another Nikon.
Well, I guess this answers the question that I had about what they were going to call the replacement for the D60 (which I assume this is) since they sure have been digging themselves a hole with their model numbering schemes (it sure couldn't have been called the D70...). They've got a bit of time to sort out a name for the replacements for the D300 (at least until they reach D600) but I certainly don't understand what the D300s is yet. Minor bump in the sensor size to compete with the Canon 50D, perhaps?
The Canon 50D has a smaller sensor than the D300, it just has more pixels crammed onto it.
Meh, it's still a Nikon...
yup, you are right.. thankfully still a Nikon :)
Best news I've heard all day.
Isn't the D700 there to compete with the 5D? I reckon a D700x or s or something will be out for the 5D
Guess they will not be in a hurry with a D700x or a D800.
The D700 still beats the crap out of the 5DMKII in most fields. If you want to trash your harddrives with those gazillion MP's of the 5DmkII or with MOOOVIES go ahead and buy a mkII, but if you want the best full frame camera for money, the D700 will remain king for a while. Where is the decent operation, tough body, good AF, color matrix metering, auto-iso outside P-mode, remote flash control, built in flash, MF lens rangefinder focussing, excellent built-in "photoshop", fast firmware and fast shooting (8fps with hack!), on demand gridlines, on a 5D mkII?
My take also -- the new D40 replacement. Fake or not, the D40 has reached EOL in the marketplace.
Here in Germany, a big electronic discounter offered the D40 kit with the 18-55 mm lens at a quite low price of €249 (roughly $350), in some of its stores even at €199 (roughly $280). There was some rumor that these low prices were rational just because Nikon supported this campaign.
The D40 already has disappeared from the German website.
If the D300s simply updates for video acquisition, it isn't worth it. It'll most likely be identical to the D90's video quality, which isn't all that bad, but it is nowhere near the video quality of other DSLRs. I'm much more interested in seeing a D700 successor with video capabilities.
I can say that after owning/shooting with both Nikon and Canon that I really have a strong preference for Nikon DSLRs.
I did start with shooting Nikons, and recently moved over to Canon with the 5DmkII.
The overall quality of the images, and the quality/price of the Canon lenses is what'll keep me shooting Canon.
However, the Nikon is much more intuitive in operation, and IMO, much more responsive. I think they're about equally consistent if you're using good lenses, but for beginners and early enthusiasts the Nikon cameras may be a better choice.
Great!
Bring on the D300S, then drop the price of the D300. That way, I can upgrade from my D200!
I could not care less for my camera to do video. I won't use the feature, and I do not want to pay for the R&D to put it in.
Take a close look at the blogspam.
I've got the picture of Nikon D3000 (with no watermark)
and I've posted at http://www.digitalslrscameras.com/nikon-d3000/
When will the d3000 be released in Europe and what will the cost be?
